Yes you got that right, let's start this term with a bang. So let's get this discussion started!!

1st off...

IF we get Philo first, what shall we get free?? I've been hearing Lituture, but I just want to make sure :D

Next...

Trades, Right now, nobody wants to trade with us again..:(,,Oh well our last few trades were excellant...:D But it doesn't stop there..

Once we have Philo, I think we should trade it right away...So what civs do we want to trade it to?? And for what??

Last...

What should we do IF we don't get Philo 1st...This is a BIG if...I think we should finish it, then trade it to the civs that don't have it but start researching Lit right away and max speed, unless that civ has Lit, then try to trade it...if we can...

Whew!! That's a big discussion...

So start discussion!! :D

Thank you for the quick briefing, truckingpete. I just want to make clear that if our race for Philosophy is successful, I will grab the chosen secondary tech and stop the chat. So let's determine that first and foremost.

After this, we would have the time until the next chat to discuss trade opportunities. We also would need to decide if would be ready to put our slim and valuable resources into the building of the Great Library. A bit of a premature discussion, perhaps, but we should have these things in the back of our minds to discuss later.

So it's pretty much up in the air. But I am all for Literature next no matter how you slice it. 40-shield Libraries will not only claim more land by culture from our wandering rivals, but it would also give our cities the scientific boost they need to start driving the tech race.

It's very difficult to be able to say what we may want to trade, without knowing what our options are. That information should be supplied at the start of the thread so people can make decisions. So here is our current situation for trade options. The resources are greyed out as we don't have a trade route with the other civs yet so can't trade resources.

Our current choice of free techs would be (current turns to research at 100% show in brackets)

Masonry (6)
Pottery (4)
Code of Laws (22)
Literature (22)
Horse Back Riding (9)
Mysticism (6)

My comments: Literature for the free tech - Mason, Pottery, HBR & Mysticism are all cheap and already available from the AI, leaving COL and Lit. Nobody has COL so we can't trade for that and get Republic. If we wanted Maths, Polytheism or Mapmaking we would have to trade for the lower techs first to enable us to get them. Lit gives us Libraries and is a good expensive tech. Our cities need Libraries for the research and for the culture - we need to close the gaps between them and start expanding our territorial borders. For the other trades, wait and see when we get Philosophy - hopefully we'll be able to trade for them all, but we may or may not have to give up Literature as well to do this. If we want the Great Library we therefore need to consider starting it now.

That is what the public opinion is for: Literature. The GL will boost us up untill we get Education. But we can always steer around Education going for the other tech paths.

If you want the Great Library, you have no choice on what free techs pop from it; our rivals very well could beeline to education and force its obsoletion. Keep that in mind. If we do grab the great library, that's a perfect time to go to 0% science, build up some gold, and upgrade about ten or fifteen warriors to swords to crush France or Germany.

However, we're behind in technology. Don't we want to trade our way back to parity? I won't want to trade literature away, but that leaves philosophy as the only tradable tech. It won't be so valuable. That is why I vote for code of laws as it is the same price as literature, and we'll be able to trade it around. Courthouses help with corruption, and it sets us up for researching the republic. With a minimum science on that tech, we can easily upgrade ten warriors and attack France or Germany. This way, we have all of our rivals' techs sooner, and don't have to rely on the great library to grab them, a wonder we've had no discussion on nor no city built up to build it!

RegentMan, there is something more important about Literature than the Great Library. And that is good, cheap Libraries for all of our cities.

At 40 shields (slightly more than a Swordsman), our cities will be able to build them in 5-8 turns (they shouldn't be started until this criteria can be met). We need those Libraries now, which I think is more important that the one big library. All told, the culture and research that these buildings provide merits an immediate need, so I am sticking with Literature.

I personally have never been a huge fan of the Great Library unless I can gain it through a Great Leader. And since our chances for an SGL are pretty slim, I won't be lobbying for its construction. That said, I think we can put Literature on the trade table, but not for the techs being offered now.

I'm slightly inclined to take Literature for our free tech. DZ's argument for cheap libraries is persuasive; but more persuasive is Furiey's thorough discussion of our alternatives.

I usually don't favor building the Great Library but I might in this game. We're going to be a pretty pathetic nation during the Ancient Age, and acquiring the GL allows us to put resources into acquiring a military than into research. However, that's a topic for another thread.

I vote for Literature. However, I also suggest that after we get Philosophy (assuming we get it first) we go to the "Big Picture" screen before selecting our next tech. It's possible that between now and the time we research Philosophy that another civ may have researched COL. In that case, I'd do a trade for COL, then select Republic for our free tech.

I know there is nothing against our rules regarding the "Big Picture" screen, but I thought that was a big no-no in PBEM games.

Also, regarding the Great Library:

400 shields = 20 Hoplites = 10 Libraries* = 13.33 Horsemen/Swordsmen

I think our resources are better used for any of these other items. We should only pursue the GL with an SGL. ;)

*We only need 5 for now

I've never played a PBEM, so I'm not familiar with those rules. I'm missing your point, though, regarding the Demo Game.

My point was that if the path to the Republic is available, that's the path we should pursue. The sooner we get out of despotism the more productive we will become.

Remember that with Republic, we lose almost all of our unit support. So we would need to be prepared for it, which unfortunately we are not.

Would I like to save all the time it takes to research Republic? Definitely! But I would need some support from the people before I make the "Big Picture" move, which is basically and end run around the time constructs of the game to most Civ purists. :)

Fanatikos, what is your take on the Big Picture search for Code of Laws?

Whoa Whoa Whoa! This a lot to read for akid to get out of school, so let me get this all straight...

We want to Go to the "Big Picture" screen when and if we get Philo, then what??? Trade and see if we can get COL BEFORE we select a free tech?? Then that free tech should be Republic if somebody has CoL, but if they don't we get the Lit for the free tech??

Did I get that right?? I don't think I did??

I think you did. Wasn't the strategy utilized last DemoGame?

You sure about that, since I think Nobody is willing to trade you his baseball card for that sandwich ;).
