To have a higher score and growth rate in Civ2

Hello,
Is it better to build up the spaceship quickly and finish the game or wait some time after most of your cities have nothing to build anymore so they can stay sometime (with capitalization)??? With which can you have a higher growth rate and civ score? Has anyone tried both and saw the results???

It is my understanding that if you're playing OCC, then the quicker you launch, the better. That is the name the game in OCC.

Otherwise, given the way that the "bonus point paradigm" works for the early finish, it is usually better to delay launch in order to maximize population, and therefore, final score.

I think your're asking how to get a high score.

Citizen +1
Happy Citizen +1
Unhappy Cit. -1
Spaceship +400 (maximum)
Barbarians +25 (raging hordes)
Peace +100 (34 years continious)
All Wonders +560
Future Tech +1275 (maximum... beware rollover to 0 at 256)
Pollution -10 (for each one)

So the answer is to get as many BIG cities, as happy as possible!

Yea - that is one thing that I should have done different in the HoF game that I have just finished!!!

I begun to change all the plains and quite a few hills to grassland to increase the food production, but later in the game I realized that after you begin to use food caravans it doesn't really matter how much food your cities produce - the important thing is that they can build food caravans fast!!!

Well just build a lot of food caravans and send them to your other cities!!!
It's not about that food trade route that comes from it, what makes your cities grow is the caravans themselves - every time a food caravan delivers food to a city it fills up half the Food supply - so two caravans in one turn fills it completely and that makes the city grow!!!!!!!!

You don't actually do this for a HOF game do you?

I don't know if it is actaully forbidden, but it just seems kind of unsporting to pump cities to unnatural sizes with food caravans for a camparison game, though with patience it is certainly possible to get at least 127 cities (if not more) up to size 127.

Also, a couple of yurn before retirement in 2020, jack up your taxes as far as they can go, this way, you got a lot of happy citizens.

Hey Starlifter, would you happen to know how to put smilies into signatures. As you can see, I'm having a tad bit of trouble.

The way I've been doing it is with a colon immediately followed by a right-parenthesis. A colon & left parenthesis gives a frown face. A semicolon & rt-par gives a winking smile face.

The BBS then converts the text smiles into a graphical smile.

Actually, you need to raise your luxuries as high as they will go (100% in democracy) on your last turn so the score will be maxed. Every light-blue citizen (happy) gives an extra point over a dark-blue.

also make a lot of hills with mines

ROTFL, now I don't see how this strategy can either increase happy people (or even increase taxes). Possibly you can use shield production for Capitalization, if you have the Corp.

Maybe this reply is actaully in response to another thread, and accidently posted here?!

The reason Hierophant says that you should have some hills with mines it because then you can build a (food) caravan every turn and thus increase you city population by one every second turn!!

Although I will try and use a food caravan on occasion to help a languishing city, I don't use them to force "unnatural" growth, personally. Playing civ would really degenerate, IMHO, if everyone employed the "size 127" strategy, or even a size 41-44 plus strategy, LOL.

I have seen some people's "record" games posted in other places, and when I see cities of size 70, 90, 110, etc... it just seems silly. But there is no denying it will increase the score. Thankfully, people don't do that in the GOTMs, but I'd still add that (forbidding food caravans from boosting a city past it's 'natural' ability to sustain itself) as a rule of play anyway if it were up to me.
