Tokugawa the Unsettled (Conquests 1.22 Deity Variant)

Looks like it might be time for a certain cunning old Celt to step forward then :D

Whoops, sorry, forgot to post the roster

Ted Jackson...UP NOW
Sir Bugsy...ON DECK
gozpel
Aggie
Nad
Greebley (on holiday)

Apologies to the team but RL has reared its ugly head and it looks as if the next month, at least, will be too full for me to play any Civ. This leaves me with no option but to retire from all my SGs :(

Hopefully I'll be back in the autumn.

Ted

I am sorry to hear that Ted.

Sir Bugsy is UP NOW
gozpel is ON DECK

Pre-flight – We’re in an alliance with Hiawatha against Mao for 11 more turns.

All our forces are up in China. We better hope we don’t get sneak attacked.

I’d like to find out about where Isabella lives. I wake up an MDI in Uruk and head him southward.

It appears that the Zulu capitol has jumped to the south near Spain. Yep, Shaka is down to one city.

The Iroquois have a huge power curve.

Let’s see if the Chinese can take Canton back.

IBT – Iroquois sign Spain to an MA against China.
Iroquois also sign an MA against the Zulu.
The Iroquois kicks some serious Chinese butt.
We build two Sams and get an addition to the palace.

1. 860 AD – Hiawatha’s troops are blocking our access to the Chinese. I therefore will block Hiawatha’s reinforcement route.

Isabella has a nice chunk of change, so I sell her Banking for 404G and a slave. We now have 862G saved up, a safe steal is 2152G.

IBT – Hiawatha wants an MPP. I’ll pass for now.
The Iroquois finally get out of our way.
Ankuwa: court=>sam

2. 870 AD – Move into Chinese territory by killing a rider, then moving our cannon stack northward.

IBT – The Iroquois destroy the Zulu.
Hattusas: sam=>sam
Madrid: musket=>sam

3. 880 AD – Hammi now has Mil Trad & ToG. A careful steal will be 1455G. I’m hoping Mao can get some sort of counterattack going against Canton. Our troops will be safe under the army.

IBT – Murcia: market=>bank
Watch the Iroquois send several cavs against Beijing. The Chinese kill three and lose a pike.
Kyoto: san=>sam
Ulundi, Tarsus: court=>sam
Aleppo: bank=>library
Akkad: bank=>sam

4. 890 AD – Continue moving north.

5. 900 AD – Move our cannon next to Beijing. Move our exploring MDI into Spanish lands.

IBT – Of course Isabella asks us to leave.
Seville: sam=>sam
Iroquois start US.

6. 910 AD - @ Beijing – Cannon go 5 for 13. Our army loses 8 hp on one attack. We lose two sams, but the city falls. All seven residents are ticked off at us.

Spend 1455G on a careful steal. We successfully get Mil Tradition.

We have some good intel on Spanish lands. I’ll get kicked out next turn.

IBT – Renew peace with Hammi.
We weren’t kicked out of Spain.

7. 920 AD – Move on Shanghai.

IBT – The Iroquois have a huge flotilla sailing around our chokepoint block.
Now we’re kicked out of Spain.
Babylon and Byzantines finally sign a treaty.
Hattusha:cav=>cav

8. 930 AD – Now Hiawatha is running a block on us at Canton. Manuver into position outside Shanghai.

IBT – Madrid, Ankuwa: cav=>cav
Chengdu:temple=>library

9. 940 AD - @ Shanghai – cannon go 8 for 13. Three elite victories fail to produce a leader, but the city falls without any loss on our part. Capture a treb. We now have a source of Dyes.

Upgrade the treb. Start positioning some cavs in our eastern cities.

IBT – Iroquois and China sign a peace treaty.
Build three cavs.

10. 950 AD - @ Nanking – Kill two pikes with cavs and cover them. Move our cannon towards Ninjian.

Complete a trans-jungle road. Start chopping jungle.

After Action – We are now free to take the Chinese war as far as we want to. They have an offshore island somewhere. They are close to giving us Navigation for peace. We can get their offshore island for peace. They don’t have much to offer.

Nanking will fall next turn. Xinjian probably could fall also. We might want to just press Mao off this landmass and then sue for peace.

We need 1447G for a careful steal against Babylon. We can get ToG from them. Another option is to save 2296G for a safe steal against the Iroquois and get Magnetism then maybe trade for ToG.

I agree Aggie. I have been sending all new builds to the east in anticipation of a war. It will be an ugly, bloody war. I think we need to plan on a war of attrition as we fight off the waves that will come. Artillery will be key.

Desperately seeking working server :) I'm probably up here and there now and my lovely outback server decided to do maintanence over the weekend.

I got it and will play today.

Pre-turn - Everything looks good, manage to squeeze another 5gpt out of towns by working river-tiles. Change Aleppo to cav.

I will save gold for a safe steal on Iro, it will take 4-5 turns.

When China is dealt with we can concentrate on sending everything we have east.

960AD - Seville cav -> cav

Sam-army attacks Xinjian, kills a pike, then goes down to 1 hp against reg pike and retreats.
Elite cav kills the pike and take the city.

Cav retreats against vet pike in Nanking, take off 2hp.
Cav dies doing nothing against vet pike.
Elite sam kill pike
Cav kill the last pike and take the city, together with Leo's!

970AD - Our ROP with Iro's expire, I don't renew it.

Tarsus cav -> cav
Ugarit court -> musket
Nicaea market -> cav

980AD - Ulundi cav -> cav
Hlobane bank ->cav
Aleppo cav -> cav

Byzantines took the most northern chinese town of Hangchow. Move troops to Tsingtao.
Iroquois are laying rails.

990AD - IT - Spain wants us to ally against Babs, no thanks.

Madrid cav -> cav
Hattusha cav -> cav

Elite sam attacks Tsingtao, wins and creates a leader Tojo. Movehim to Xinjian and build army. Another elite sam take the city.

Peace with China for Navigation, WM and 10g. They wouldn't give up Democracy even if they're down to one city, which is quite silly. But who cares, at least we know the layout of most of the world now.

I try to demand WM from Byz, they refuse, so I give them Metallurgy for WM and 38g. I took off the 3gpt they offered, if we want to take them out.

Hmm, the price of a safe steal cost 150g more now? I wait until we have the gold.

1000AD - Hattusas cav -> cav
Kyoto cav -> cav
Akkad cav -> cav
Ankuwa cav -> cav

Safely steal Magnetism from Iro's for almost 2400g. Babs won't trade ToG for it, I get so tired sometimes.

1010AD - Seville cav -> cav

1020AD - Not much.

1030AD - Buy ToG from Babs for Metal, WM and 955g.

Babs learn Steam, which we will steal when we can afford it. Iro's already knows Nationalism, Steam and Medicine.

1040AD - Madrid cav -> cav
Tarsus cav -> cav
Hattusha cav -> cav
Nicaea cav -> bank

1050AD - Iroquois declare war on us and steal lots of workers.

Hattusas cav -> cav
Kyoto cav -> cav
Hlobane cav -> cav
Akkad cav -> cav
Ankuwa cav -> cav

We take Canton, lose an elite sam and a vet cav.

Remove 5 Iro cavs from our territory,losing none.

Upgrade some stuff.

We have to play defensively for a few turns now. Remove all enemies near Canton so we can move the stack of cannons down east.

Depending on what happens, the temple-builds in former China could be changed to rushed muskets.

If we could get alliances with Babs and Byz's, we can create a divertion for the Iro units.

Have fun :)

Kind of nice seeing what the world looks like. Well done gozpel! Given the size of the Iroquois nation, I'd say we're in really good shape if we can withstand the initial onslaught. I think with superior tactics we can more than match the AI build advantage. That choke point to the east of Isandlsomething and Santiago will be a great place to control if we can get there.

IHT: We are not ready for this war against the Iroquois. We are also far behind them in techs (we even are behind the Babylonians!).

IT: cav kills rifle [0-1]

Turn 1 (1060 AD) Cannons get 6 rifles and muskets in former China to 2 HP. Vet cav kills 2 hp rifle. Another one dies trying the same. A third vet cav manages to promote.
In the east 12 vet cavs kills 4 vet rifles, 1 MDI, 2 muskets, 1 cav and 1 crusader. 2 cavs retreated, 1 was killed. [11-3]

IT: A lot of luck in China. A rifle and two cavs kill a crusader, a longbow and two MDI's. But we see a real SoD in the east. [15-3]

Turn 2 (1070 AD) The Iroquois have guerillas, but do they have rubber? 24 Iroquois units appeared in the east. Only one of them is fast and could attack a city. All cannons miss their target, but luckily an elite cav kills the guerilla in China. 9 cavs kill 3 rifles. 2 retreat and 4 are killed :( [19-7]

IT: We lose two musket and kill one cav. More troops enter our land. [20-8]

Turn 3 (1080 AD) The situation looks grim. We don't have enough troops in the east. 16 cavs kill 4 cavs, 5 MDI and 1 rifle. 5 cavs are killed, 1 retreats. We get a leader early on and this is immediately turned into a cav army [party] Cav army kills two rifles.
In China I bombard the last 4 Iroquois troops to 2 HP, 3 cavs and a Samurai take out a rifle, 2 muskets and crusader. [34-13]

I try to carefully steal Steam from Babylon and succeed. It did cost us mere 1563 gold. We don't have to worry about coal.

IT: Longbow kills a cav, but we kill a cav and MDI. [36-14]

Turn 4 (1090 AD) In the east: 14 cavs kill 4 cavs, 1 guerilla, 1 MDI, 1 longbow, 1 musket and 3 rifles. 1 cav is killed, 2 retreat. Samurai army kills two longbows. Cav army kills a rifle.
Kyoto is switched to Pentagon. This was a good round. I far less pessimistic than I was two turns ago. [50-15]

IT: We lose three cavs in the IT and I see an infantry. There goes my optimism :p [50-20]

Turn 5 (1100 AD) 6 cavs kill 3 cavs and 1 rifle. 3 cavs are killed. [54-23]

IT: A new massive invasion, but now with quite a few infantry units! The Byzantines send a SoD into our territory???

Turn 6 (1110 AD) 12 cavs kill 8 cavs and 1 guerilla. 3 cavs are killed. 7 elite wins, no leader. Two cav armies kill 2 infantry. Samurai army kills two cavs. [67-26]

IT: Wow :eek: The Iroquois send a SoD from the east and drop of 6 units in former China. Does almost looks like genuine AI!

Turn 7 (1120 AD) 10 cavs, finally helped by cannons kill 4 cavs and 2 infantries. 3 cavs are killed, 1 retreats. Cav army kills 1 rifle and 2 guerillas.

Former China: 4 and 1 samurai cavs kill 2 rifles. 2 cavs retreat, 1 cav is killed. We will surely lose one and maybe two cities. Probably only for a turn and also not the most important cities. But still... :cry: I swiftly hurry 6 cavs. [66-27]

IT: We lose Beijing, 3 cavs and only kill 5 of them :cry: [71-30]

Turn 8 (1130 AD) The battle of Beijing: 2 cavs and 1 samurai kill 1 infantry and 2 cavs. We have the city back [dance]
The east: 4 cavs kill 2 cavs and 1 rifle. 1 retreats. [79-30]

IT: :cry: Again 7 units land close to Beijing :cry:

Turn 9 (1140 AD)
The east: 3 cavs kill 1 guerilla and 1 infantry. 1 cav retreats. I get my 2nd leader :D The new cav army proves it's worth and kills 2 infantries. Samurai army kills infantry. Cav army kills guerilla.
Near Beijing: cav army kills two rifles. 9 cavs kill 3 rifles and 2 cavs, 1 cav retreats, 3 cavs killed. The Beijing threat is gone. [93-33]

IT: Iroquois cavs vs Japanese cavs: 1-2 [95=34]

Turn 10 (1150 AD) The east: 7 cavs kill 4 cavs, 1 guerilla. 1 cav is killed, 1 retreat. [100-35]

This was 10 turns of survival. I hoped to be able to attack the Iroquois within 5 turns, but I was very wrong. We are very backward compared to the Iroquois. But otherwise we are doing OK.

EDIT: Changed the nr of killed units on our side.

A four to one kill ratio given our technological disadvantage is a tribute to your tactical prowess there Aggie. How soon do you think we could move on the two Iroquois cities in our south, or will we be in skirmishing mode for a while?

Thank you for the compliment. I don't see an opportunity to raze or take cities yet. We are still facing slow units that I couldn't kill and also a few cavalry. Our FP city is at a risky spot and the Chinese peninsula is also often under attack. So I had to defend three places at least. Railroads will help and we now have a fast route from west to east.

Unfortunately I couldn't set things up before the Iro's attacked, as all our cannons was in old chinese territory and as the cheapskate I was didn't renew the ROP with Iro's.

The good news is that Aggie held on bravely and 4-1 is great right now, especially as the enemy is throwing everything at us. That will slow down and we can build up a counter-force soon. We need heaps of cannons to weaken them further.

Try to use the bombarding units on the ships that send units over to old china, that will make them go away and heal and we can reinforce.

We can still use Byz'n'Bab's as allies, just to create disorder in the iroquios attacks.

Tremendous work Aggie, superb going! :) Getting 4:1 ratios when stretched as we were is a terrific achievement, it means we're winning the war even while we're the ones scrambling! Once we stabilize we will destroy the Iroquois in no time...I'd imagine there can't be much more than 30-40 turns left in this game.

I see I am up, but I cannot play until Friday evening. If anyone else wishes to play before then they are welcome, if not I will play Friday evening.

I just re-read my turnlog and saw that I lost 10 units more than reported. So the ratio is 3:1. Still it more than compensates the deity factor of the Iroquois. And with the two extra armies and railroads we should be in better shape.
