Tokugawa the Unsettled (Conquests 1.22 Deity Variant)

It is true I was taking a bit more risks with our rep due to it already being broken. The Zulu one seemed reasonable, as I could see the situation and was pretty sure I could destroy the Hittites before the Zulu were killed.

For the Babylon, I think you are right. I didn't realize Babylon was as weak as it was and a war Babylon vs Byzantines could cut the trade route. Babylon is second strongest in tech, so I was thinking they would have more cities than they do.

It is definitely true I wouldn't have done those deals if our rep was intact.

[Edit: Actually I renegotiated peace with Babylon. If the route breaks we are at war with Babylon right? Does it actually affect our rep though? I thought the exploit was that breaking peace deals didn't have repercussions. Does that include our rep not being ruined? ]

Notes
We are at a major decision point here. There are 3 minor enemies that we could snap up in the next 10-20 turns. Spain (no deals, 3 cities & Furs), Byzantium (at war, 3 cities) & Babylon (3 turns left on deals, 3 cities).

We have to pass through Babylon to get to Byzantium so we either need a RoP (not a good idea IMHO) or we could take on the Spanish now then turn our attention to Babylon (who's already at war with Byzantium) when the deals expire and tackle Byzantium last.

I didn't want to set off on this course on my last turn without discussing it with the team so I've only moved the Galley, leaving the rest of the movement for the next player.

I've seen a Chinese Caravel so Astronomy is out there but nobody will sell Chemistry. We could steal it from Babylon (and maybe precipitate an earlier war with them) now or wait until the deals expire.

The save is > here <

Ted

I've got the game. Will start playing during lunch.

Edit - if we've come to a decision. I think we want to keep a consolidated front. I wouldn't want to have a salient off in Babylon or Byzantine lands.

If Spain is closer, I'd say let's pummel Isabella, then move on to the other two.

We also need to start thinking about how we're going to deal with the Iroquois. They seem to be the big dog on the block.

OK, so here's a plan, probably a little ambitious.

1. Get peace with Theodora
2. Wipe out Spain
3. Wipe out Babylon

Well, I didn't manage to get any of the three items in the plan completed.

Pre-flight – 550 AD – Theodora won’t talk to us. She really isn’t a threat though. Spain is at war with China. I think I will move our units over there and join in on the fun.

Hiawatha is MA’ed with Isabella against China. Hopefully our horse supply to Hiawatha will keep him from declaring on us. I move a good chunk of troops into position to declare next turn. Check to make sure we have no active deals with Isabella.

I can buy Education from Mao for 1572G. I can buy it from Hiawatha for WM & 1453G. I can’t buy Chemistry for any price. It is actually more expensive to try and steal the tech.

Stealing Chemistry is a whole lot cheaper. A safe steal attempt from Babylon is 1664G. Of course we could fail. I find some Hittite virgins that we had stashed away, drag them to the temple and make an offering to the RNG god :worship: :worship:

Nad_550_-_Steal.jpg

I select Chemistry, then turn around and sell it to Mao for Education and 18G. So two MA techs for 1646G and we still have our WM a secret.

MM’ing I change one tile. I love playing with you guys.

We have some seriously happy people. :)

IBT – Watch the Chinese, Iroquois, and Spanish pound on each other. The Byzantines send two dromans down the coast, probably to drop off some units around Madrid.
Hattusha: sam=>sam

1. 560 AD – The %$#^&* Iroquois are blocking the main path to Barcelona. We’ll go around them. Declare on Spain. Moving troops into Spain, the Iroquois are blocking the pass northwest of Barcelona, so I won’t be able to get our trebs there. The Spanish have a force on the mountain SW of Barcelona. Since the way to Barcelona will be slow, I start to gather a force to march on Toledo in our FP city.

Since resistance has ended in Nicaea, I spend 80G rushing the temple.

IBT – On the approaches to Barcelona, our forces win 2, lose 1, retreat from one The Byzantines drop off one near Madrid. A droman sinks our galley. I won’t even be able to attack it, since the Chinese and the Iroquois are in the way.
Our GA ends.
Kyoto: sam=>sam
Hlobane: worker=>court
Nicaea: temple=>court

2. 570 AD – Kill a Spanish pike near Uruk. Without loss we kill the pike, wounded MDI, and wounded LB on the mountain SW of Barcelona. We move five sams onto the mountain. There is a Byz AC just on the other side. We also move two sams to a mountain overlooking Toledo.

Theodora still won’t talk to us. This might work out well. By the time she wants to talk we’ll have destroyed her civilization.

IBT – The Byzantines drop off two muskets and their AC runs away.
Madrid, Aleppo: sam=>sam
Ankuwa: library=>sam

3. 580 AD – I move some more forces towards Barcelona and Toledo.

IBT – Byzantines & Zulu sign a peace treaty
In a :smoke: move, Spain moves a LB out of Barcelona.
Hammi wants to renew our peace treaty. Since we want to go to war with Hammi next, and Hiawatha is running such a good block, I decline.

Most of the Byzantines run off towards Babylon, a musket pillages an ivory, we have another
Tarsus, Seville: Sam=>sam
Akkad: granary=>treb

4. 590 AD – Kill two wandering Spanish LBs.

Looks like I can have our trebs up to Barcelona in three turns.

Hiawatha has some units between Toledo and our troops.

IBT – Shaka wants an Alliance against Hiawatha. With all these purple troops running through our lands? Are you nuts?!
We lose an MDI to a Spanish LB.
With his civilization crumbling around him, Hammi hires a fellow named Will Shakespeare to build a theatre.

5. 600 AD – Kill a pike heading towards Toledo.

Kill another wandering LB.

IBT – An interesting move I watch Hiawatha capture a Chinese treb, and then watch Mao pass up three opportunities to recapture it out in the open.
Hattusus: Granary=>Market
Kyoto: sam=>sam

6. 610 AD – In a move some will call :smoke: I decide to attack Barcelona with our stack without treb support. I lose our MDI army, and two sams. Three retreats and five victories.

IBT – A Byz AC attacks Barcelona and we lose a sam.
Hattusha: sam=>sam
The palace gets a fourth story.

7. 620 AD – move our trebs closer to Toledo.

We now have several cities producing 12 spt, or a sam every 6 turns with a waste of 2 spt. If you keep track you can get a little extra food in three cities on the sixth turn.

IBT – Isabella wants to talk. All she can give us is Republic. Sorry sweetheart. Two Spanish defenders approach Toledo. We’ll need to kill them before they get there.
Outside of Barcelona, a Byz AC kills our sam.
Madrid: sam=>sam
Murcia: treb=>treb
Iroquois start Newton’s.

8. 630 AD – We kill two Byz muskets that have intentions to start a pillaging campaign. We kill the murderous Byz AC.

I’m going to have to let those two defenders reach Toledo, since I can’t get a healthy unit on the right side of the river to attack them. Let’s hope the trebs work next turn.

IBT – Isabella must have some seriously good :smoke: because the two potential defenders don’t enter the city. In fact another LB leaves the city.
Ugarit: galley=>court
Akkad: treb=>treb
Iroquois complete Shakes’

9. 640 AD - @ Toledo – trebs go 2 for 6. Glad I waited for those things. :rolleyes:
We lose three sams, retreat times and take the city. The Spanish still have a city down to the south.

Clean up the three Spaniards that left Toledo.

MM Ankuwa for the extra food.

IBT – Kyoto, Seville, Ankuwa: sam=> sam

10. 650 AD – I’m going to leave most of the units unmoved.

After Action – I haven’t made peace with Isabella, because I didn’t want Barcelona or Toledo to flip on us and then not be able to get the cities back.

I would keep enough units around Uruk for a zone defense against any Spanish units that might straggle by.

Everything else I would throw at Babylon and Byzantines.

The Chinese are starting to take it in the shorts against the Iroquois. We might want to jump into that battle soon.

The Iroquois are really clogging up our roads. Right now they all happen to be around Toledo. I have started building some strategic roads to ease the congestion. You might want to put a unit on a chokepoint if one ever opens up. The iron NW of Barcelona has been constantly occupied by the Iroquois.

Looks like great work from Ted and Sir Bugsy :goodjob:. Will take some time to examine and comment tomorrow :).

Looks like we continue to make good progress :D

The loss of our last army will hurt. They are very useful on taking out towns. Hopefully, we will get a new leader soon. A samari army will be useful until late in the game; or we may get to Mil Trad soon enough to go for the powerful Cav army.

I would send the boats around to explore. Knowing the shape of our continent and the location of islands will be useful.

China and Iroquois are still at war. Problem is that we are between so we can't take real advantage of this. I think clearing the nearby smaller civs and prepping a war with China. We can pick up good cities near the capitol so China seems better than the Iroquois at first. They can wait I think.

[Edit: Today is my last day to post before my trip. Tomorrow we will be on the road. Good luck on this game - I suspect it will look very different on the 8th/9th when I get back.

I agree with Greebley, I think once the smaller civs are eliminated the we should look to eliminate the smaler Chinese front. I would ally with the Iroquois against China take out China, and then have the big one-on-one battle with the Iroquois...brinksmanship at its best :)

I think that is a sound plan. By taking Babylon and Byzantine land we will actually consolidate our eastern frontier.

It will be essential in the China campaign to grab that first city (Chengdu?) quickly. Having to fight through the jungle slows our troops and allows Mao to pick them off before they are a threat.

One idea. Get a ROP with Mao and chop down some of that jungle between Kyoto and Chengdu.

IHT: The Iroquois are far advanced and China is a lot of techs in front as well. I don't see a lot of cities to grab, except for Babylon. It's a pity that we lost all our armies.
We have 7 more turns in a deal with China and we shouldn't renew the horse deal with uberpower the Iroquois.
Our people are happy and the cities are MM-ed very well. I don't see why we haven't built any libraries (we are going all out military), but I will not change it in my ten. I WILL start banks when that comes available.

Our southern galley spots the new Spanish capital.

Turn 1 (660 AD) The old story of Iroquois blocking our roads.

IT: We lose a galley vs an Iroquois privateer.

Turn 2 (670 AD) 7 Samurai reach Ashur and decide to liberate the people there next turn. Other Samerai near Babylon.

IT: We lose a 2nd galley vs a dromon. Byzantines and Iroquois MA vs Zulu.

Turn 3 (680 AD) One of the Samurai is killed, but the other 6 fight bravely and liberate Ashur.
I decide to safely steal Banking from China. I succeed for 1768 gold. A number of core towns is switched to banks.

IT: A longbouw and musket kill relined Samurai outide Ashur.

Turn 4 (690 AD) The Byzantines are very annoying and lands troops near Ashur. I make peace straight up, but the Byzantines include 75 gold. Naturally the Iroquois have their own horses now.

An elite Samurai kills a Babylonian longbow and we have a leader. This is immediate turned into a Samurai army.

Turn 5 (700 AD) 7 Samurai and a samurai army kill 3 musket and take Babylon. Unfortunatelly one Samurai didn't make it. The Babylonians have a few techs over us, so we may want to pointy stick and not kill them.

IT: The Iroquois and Chinese sign peace.

Turn 6 (710 AD) I make peace with Babylon for Astronomy and Metallurgy. I pay 146 gold and expect that the Babylonians are dead soon. And the worst thing that can happen is that they get more techs from the money.

Turn 7 (720 AD) Nothing much.

IT: Our last deal with China ends, but the troops are still in the east. The Iroquois finish Newton.

Turn 8, 9 (730, 740 AD) Troop movement, to a Chinese future front.

Turn 10 (750 AD) Babylon is up one tech. China knows no required tech that we don't know. Iroquois are in the IA. I vote to go after China now.

Nice work Aggie. I'll be looking to play tomorrow.

Tokugawa the Unsettled, inherited turn 750AD

All looks good and nicely set to declare war on China next turn. I didn't realize we owned Sun Tzu...that's a huge wonder in this game! I don't sell our proper barracks in case Ulundi flips, but that's an option we have if we ever need a few extra pennies.

Early: Spain and China made peace. In 760AD, even though there are a number of Chinese troops in our land, I demand republic, democracy and navigation, and declare war when China refuses (I could have issued a boot order, but the risk was that China might have agreed, and then would have had a bunch of troops in one stack rather than a dribble).

Cleaned up our lands of Chinese infiltrators, captured some slaves. Upgraded trebuchets to cannon.

Signed in Iroquois against China, receiving 300g but giving wines and furs. Then signed free rop. Our biggest enemy is currently gracious :p.

Made peace with Spain, to avoid distractions, taking republic + 65g for astronomy. Failed to extort 94g from Byzantium :( :D.

Initial plan is to let Iroquois face the brunt of the Chinese counter while we pick off units and then head for Chengdu when some of the initial units are killed.

Iroquois promptly signed in Byzantium against China, and did us a great service by cleaning out a lot of the Chinese rifraff, though it's a bit disconcerting to see Irqouois with rifles...still, I'm not too worried about the tech race in this game.

Did some pillaging and killed a few loose Chinese units, while upgrading most of our forces.

Middle: captured Chengdu in 800AD for the loss of only one samurai, so delay worked out well. Healed up and began to move towards Canton.

Late: In 830AD we had enough gold for an immediate steal, so tried against Babylon (could get out of a 146gpt payment if fail) and succeeded! We learned Physics.

840AD was a headbanging turn, as we came in within 2HP of an unfortified pike in capturing Canton :mad: This meant, of course, that the Iroquois captured it in their turn...we did all the work and they got the reward...Civ can be so frustrating sometimes. Nevertheless, the Chinese may recapture it (unlikely) and it should be an easy target for us when we declare against Iroquois.

For the next player: might be worth giving the Iroauois a taste of their own medicine, letting them do the killing and then nipping in to take cities. Enjoy your turns, but I would suggest staying wary in case of an Iroquois betrayal...they have a lot of units in our land and a sneak attack could be disastrous, so keep nearby cities well defended.

TokuUnsettledWarfront850AD.jpg

We also can control that choke point if we want to keep the Iroquois from capturing any more cites. That was well played Nad.

I was sure I posted a swap here, due to a presentation I have to make (8 A4 finished :)) and the presentation take place tomorrow, so I can play thursday.

It looks like I must've been posting when drunk, SGOTM missed my call as well. Wonder where those posts are?

Sorry about that.
