Tokugawa the Unsettled (Conquests 1.22 Deity Variant)

I played a very secure turnset, knowing what was coming. There's only a handful or two enemy units around now and they won't be a problem.

Aggie can probably make some intelligent moves and some dents in the Iro territory.

You can rushbuy an army if you feel you need it, Aggie.

IHT: We do have 50% of the population and 58% of the land. I rush build an army.

IT: Still a lot of troops entering our lands. And 4 units land near Hattusas.

Turn 1 (1360 AD) A couple of Iroquois units redlined. Cav army takes out 4 infs. 2nd cav army takes out 2 infs and 1 guerilla. 3rd cav army kills 2 infs and 1 cav. Cavs kill 3 infs, 1 guerilla, 1 rifle and 2 cavs. Cav army and 4 other cavs are sent to Iroquois lands to pillage. [17-3]

IT: Another SoD of the Iroquois comes. I can't do anything else than kill them. So no progress, except for the cav army pillaging their lands.

Turn 2 (1365 AD) The only healed cav army kills 3 cavs in a SoD after redlining about 15 infs. I decide to let those infs go and heal our troops. The only dyes of the Iroquois pillaged. [20-3]

IT: A small number of Iroquois units enter our lands. The rest retreats. The Iroquois have transports (Combustion. Oil)

Turn 3 (1370 AD) 39 artillery can be made available for the siege of Isandhiwana (size 20). Army rushed.

IT: The transport carried... 1 cav

Turn 4 (1375 AD) 4 infs and a cav redlined and civil defense destroyed in Isandh. A cav army takes out 4 infs and an elite cav kills a cav to take Isandh.

Artillery at home redlines the most dangerous invading troops of the Iroquois. Cav army takes out 2 infs, 1 guerilla and 1 cav. Another cav army kills 4 cavs.
15 artillery and a SoD of cavs and cav-armies move to Santiago. [33-3]

IT: The Iroquois send 13 units to Isandh. And two cavs retreat vs infs in that city.

Turn 5 (1380 AD) We faill to redline 2 of the 6 infs in Santiago. 5 cav armies and a lot of other cavs kill 6 infs, 2 guerillas and 2 cavs. We lose 8 cavs :( But we take Santiago.
Iroquois troops near Isandh are redlined and I assume they will retreat. An inf in our territory killed. [44-12]

IT: One killed Irqouois cav in the counterttack. [45-12]

Turn 6 (1385 AD) Consolidation turn. I rush an army and redline all Iroquois troops close to our borders. I also pillage their route to Isandh.

IT: The Iroquois have bombers  Three of them hurt our infantry in Santiago and that's why we see an Infantry killed by a cav. We manage to kill 4 cavs of the Iroquois, but our army is redlined... They also land 4 units in our core [48-13]

Turn 7 (1390 AD) Artillery redlines and cav army kills 2 infs and 2 cavs in our core. 5 cav armies and 2 cavs kill a total of 14 infs and a cav. We lose a cav. Troops move to Eridu. [64-13]

IT: 4 bombers target an army and Santiago. We lose an inf and the Iroquois a cav near Santiago [65-14]

Turn 8 (1395 AD) Eridu only has 3 infs. After redlining them a cav army takes out all three. We immediately press forward towards Valencia.
The 8 units in our core are relined and killed by a cav army and 6 cavs. We lose a cav there. 3 elite cavs take out 2 cavs and an inf. Finally we get a leader. This will be another cav army. [79-15]

Army rushed.

IT: 11 bombers do damage to Toledo. So nothing worrying because that town is hardly strategic. We can't build another army (not enough cites :( )

Turn 9 (1400 AD) Valencia's 3 infs are redlined and then killed by an army. We take the city. 4 armies are needed to take Tyendanaga and kill four infs. Three elite cavs kill two infs, one dies.

We have enough cities to switch Kyoto back to an army. [88-16]

I like this round number so I end my here. We have 64% land and 58% population. We need 25 tiles to get the territory needed. We will get that in 20 turns peacefully (throughborder expansion). The Iroquois only want to give us 1 city (Tiensin) and flip risks are too big to go a peaceful route now... The population is another story and those bombers are very annoying. Not to mention the tanks that MAY appear fast. This means that we have to be quick. Should be possible with 9 cav armies (and 10 next turn).

EDIT: I largely ignored the invading Iroquois military after bombing them to 2HP or less. They then will retreat and allow us to focus on more pressing matters. Winning :D Also: as soon as we have two more cities we'd better raze the rest. We then only have to get their pop down and recapture flipped cities. Although we may have enough workers and slaves to join.

Not at all...go ahead. I could play tomorrow, but there's not much to do except rush temples and irrigate everywhere. I'm happy for you to finish off :).

IT: A lot of bombings on our SoD close to the Iroquois lands.

turn 10 (1405 AD) I do nothing more than redline the invaders and move our SoD even closer to Kahnawake.

IT: Again 10 bombers hurt our SoD a lot. Isandh flips back to the Iroquois.

Turn 11 (1410 AD) We need 6 cavs to take back Isandh, losing 2 cavs vs 4 infs. 5 infs of Kahnawake are redlined. 3 cav armies kill 5 infs and we take Kahnawake.
I now send everything but the kitchen sink to Allegheny. 5 cav armies kill 5 infs. We lose an army there. But we are at 66% land. To be sure I take Tiensin for peace with the Iroquois.

After this I join workers and slaves to cities without letting them starve. This works out except for 3 cities. Then I up the lux tax to 50%, to make our people happy.

IT: The Iroquois start Hoover.

Thank you all for this great game. I really didn't expect this variant to be so... easy! But I guess it all depended on how we started and we did great there.

Well done Aggie :). A nice finish.

I agree, I thought this would be much harder than it turned out...but, to be honest, I can't remember a single point in the game where we were really up against it, and we thought we would not win. I think it says a lot about the team and the standard of play that we could win by domination (it could just as easily have been conquest), on deity, without ever building a single settler. It's also a nice experience to have in the locker...it adds a whole new complexion to the land grab, if you can think "forget the landgrab, I'll just conquer all the cities instead!"

I agree that the first 100 turns won this game. Going straight onto the military path was exactly the right thing to do in this variant, and once we carved a small core from Spain, we had enough to go on to smash the AIs comprehensively.

My thanks to everyone that played, hats off to you, a great victory which was no mean feat. Well done .

On a personal note, you may all have noticed that my posting has dwindled in the last few weeks, and I have not been that involved in the latter part of this game. Unfortunately I have arrived at that stage where I don't get the Civ thrill anymore :(. For most of the last 2 years I have been a proper CivFanatic, and I remember my early SGs where I use to look forward to every single turn and wanted to be involved in every major decision. I remember writing massive long posts on options available in all sorts of situations and offering all sorts of crazy ideas :D. Now, I still enjoy playing a bit of Civ, but I don't have the drive, the addiction any longer. I think this was my last SG, certainly for a while. I'll definitely be lurking other SGs and if I see a really interesting variant I'll probably jump in ;). So thanks everyone, for playing/reading this and the other SGs I have participated in or hosted, and good luck/skill/killing with your future games.

See you around

Nad

[btw, I see from grs' avatar that he's a fan of Planescape:Torment. On a related note the computer game I'm playing the most these days is Baldur's Gate II. For anyone into RPGs, I would highly recommend it. It's got a nice strategy element, like Civ, but more action-based and generally great to let your hair down].

Now I'm extra happy that I got the honour to finish it, since I was the first player to join your first SG. I can understand that the civ thrill has gone and frankly I already noticed that your posting habits had changed. Not only the frequency, but I also didn't see you good old enthousiasm about the game a lot.

In fact, I have come to a same conclusion as you. I think that I know what to expect from a civ game now, regardless of the level. Even Sid level doesn't have a lot of surprises. Doesn't mean that I win all those Sid games, but I highly doubt if I like the way you have to play to get out of a Sid tech hole. What convinced me most was that we were able to conquer the emperor AI in an OCC. I will play my last 3 SG's to the end (or as far as I can play before I go on a holiday) and probably will not be playing the game a lot anymore, eagerly awaiting the release of CIV4.

Nad, thanks for all those great games. We have played 13 games together :) A lot of fond memories, like Warmonger's Delight, Chamber of Secrets, I dream of Dromons, Let's try Sid...

13 games?! I didn't realize it was that much! Let me think:

1) Warmonger's Delight
2) The Phase Wars
3) The Non-Midas Touch
4) Isabella and the Chamber of Secrets
5) Non-Midas With A Vengeance
6) I Dream of Dromons
7) OCC Zulu Conquest
8) Five Take On The World
9) Five Take On the World Revisited
10) Tokugawa the Unsettled
11) Let's Try Sid
12) RBC?? Visigoths

What's the 13th? I can't think what it is.

Looking back, I remember most of those games very well, all were very enjoyable. My favourite was Isabella and the Chamber of Secrets, that was just awesome...the concept, the craziness, the team, the banter, the stories...I had a great time with that. Also, the first crack at Non-Midas I really enjoyed...I know we lost, but I prefer the challenging games, and it's fun to play in a game where you're on the receiving end. And I Dream of Dromons was also brilliant, I remember my last couple of turns in that very well...extrmely time-consuming, but tremendously rewarding, modern warfare at its best, trying to take out a superpower while time is ticking.

And yes, if Civ 4 turns out to be good, then I'm sure we'll be playing many more SGs together :D ;).

You can check out my SG history link for the 13th game. I dropped out, because I was doing a bad job :)

Yes, the first NMT was also great. I probably played one of my favorite 10 turns in that game. Capturing 2 cities and getting us out of a tech hole with a GA. And the most devastating AI attack I also experienced in that game :p

13) The Arabian Knights...ah yes, very long ago, I don't remember that, but I will definitely be reading it. Your SG history is outstanding, you've played an incredible number of games! I think only LKendter has probably played more. It seems ironic, then, that you dropped out of the Arabian Knights because you were too inexperienced! :D.

Thanks to you especially Aggie, for the memories ;). Now I think we'd better stop reminiscing or else this will turn into a mutual admiration thread :D.

I had a good time in this game and enjoyed playing with you guys. You certainly are much more experienced in SG's and showed me some new tricks and tips.

Thanks all! :)

Good game all. I think this variant has the potential to be very challenging, but had a strong start and did well.

I too will miss playing with you Nad. Your training game was my first SG and I learned a lot from you. However, I am also feeling a bit civved out and plan to lessen my play. I will probably keep up the AW games, - I like them for some reason (So no coming up with good variants Aggie :p ) The occasional game on the side...

The fact that thief 3 came out also plays a role in my less civ decision... I have other games back-logged too. Various RPG's I really want to play for example.

Wow, so I already played 8 SGs with Aggie? Time flies so fast.

I'm sure some day I'll get bored too, but not yet. I have not reached the stage that I could win insane deity games easily yet, so it will take a while, hopefully until civ4 comes out.

That was a pretty memorable game gents. Thanks a lot. I now have a new goal... come up with a variant to lure Nad out of semi-retirement. :D
