Tom Chick at Fidgit.com interviews Derek "Kael" Paxton

Really interesting interview. Only thing missing was a bit of back story about the Kael and the team (Cool and the gang) and Fraxis and the process of getting the mod into the BTS expansion.

Based on what you've written, I would spell it out phonetically in English as "Lyos-al-far," with "lyos" being pronounced as a single syllable.
Yes, that seems about right. :)

If we stretch things a bit further, the Svartalfar can easily be the "Elves who have given - or found - the answer", using 'svart', meaning 'answered' from modern Norwegian.
True, though in Norwegian svart also means black, like it does in Icelandic. The origin is the same norse word (svartr). And in nynorsk and many Norwegian dialects, ljos = light (as in Iceland). So you get the same light & dark theme in Norwegian.

(though alfar is not a modern Norwegian word (the Norwegian equivalent is alver). Both alfar and alver come from the same origin, the norse word alfr)

I imagine the elves of Erebus might enjoy these kind of double meanings and wordplays - both can insult the other elves and praise themselves using the same words, leaving humans and outsiders utterly bewildered, even if they understand the language.

Hehe, yeah.

Im an early achiever.

Actually I married a woman with 2 sons, and she is 5 years older than I am. To this day my wife teases that I married her to get to hang out with the kids (who were about 4 and 6 when we started dating and just getting into all the fun toys).

But I never think of them as step children so I dont talk about them as such, which does occasionally lead to confusion when people do the math.

Good for you!!!

Btw, loved the interview background. But I'm starting to think I'm the old man in the FfH forum!

Best wishes,

Breunor

Well, I guess many of us are around Kael's age, many of us got "raised" with turn based strategy games and early D&D related RPG games.

However, unlike Kael, I have played the X-Com Series, and liked it a lot. ;)

(I still play it from time to time, it is a game with a combination of features still not easy to find, although many games are similar one way or another.)

But I'm starting to think I'm the old man in the FfH forum!

I turn 40 on the 22nd.

I say this not so much to make you feel better, but in the (forlorn) hope that people will send me gifts. Or money. I'm not proud. Send my guy in Pet Society some mystery boxes. Anything :goodjob:

Chronological age : 40. Apparent age : 60. Mental age : 12.

Youngster! I'm looking for people who originally watched the Twilight Zone was it was on network, not as a rerun!

Best wishes,

Breunor

Twilight Zone? How about Howdy Doody? But as old as I may be, I really don't feel old. I sure didn't turn out to be like the old people were when I was young.

That's awesome and I also hope that one day mods will get even more attention by the (more mainstream) gaming press

You and me both. There is a misconception that mods are low quality or not fun and a lot of people are missing out on some great free game play to various games because they wont go out and download player made content.

Caradoc,

Well, you beat me!

Kael, I think you are single-handedly bringing the mod world forward. There have been other good mods, but FfH is simple incomparable! Seriously, I felt Civ IV was a great game, but if we view FfH with it, it is probably my favorite computer game of all time.

My kids tell me that some of the Exile mod/scenarios are really outstanding too.

Thunder,

I resisted going to Windows years ago simply because I didn't think I could play X-Com in it! Under any assessment, one of the greatest computer games of all time!

Best wishes,

Breunor

You have taught us a valuable lesson with FFH about how fun mods can be

To bad were all so hopelessly addicted to FFH that we'll never actually get to use it :p
