Hey Guys, First off Im new here and I would like to say that this is a great site. Whoever the owner is has done a great job on it. This is my first post but I have been playing Civ 3 since it came out. Now onto my questions. Like I said before I have been playing Civ 3 for a while now. But not since recently have I messed around with the Edit feature so I can make my custom games. I like making the maps as big as they let you and with 16 nations. But I've been running into a problem; too many cities! Does the game have a limit of the number of cites it allows? If so is that limit only for you or everyone in that world and what is the limit? Also is there a way to fix this or any suggestions on what I can do to not have this problem and would just decreasing the nation count fix this?

There is a maximum amount of cities for all nations combined. I forget what it is, but it's high up, at least somewhere in mid hundreds I think. Most city lists are probably about 30 cities, so these civs would need something like New Constantinople 10 to get to a limit like that. So it may be hard to get a Conquest victory on this and it may take hours to manage your cities even for one turn late in the game, but I don't think it will reach the limit.

Welcome to CFC! :wavey:

I believe the maximum city limit is 512.

There cannot be, IIRC, more than 255 cities on the map altogether. Reducing the number of civs may make this happen a little later in the game, but overall won't really solve the problem. A good solution to this problem that I've heard is to reduce the types of terrain that cities can be built on. Perhaps only grassland, plains and floodplains.

EDIT: Crossposted with smellincoffee, and he's probably got the right number.

Yep, the max limit is 512...after that, to build more cities, you need to raze/abandon other ones. Sorry, this is a hard coded limit - it can't be changed. :( (What some people have done is made it so you can't found cities on jungle, tundra, and desert - this makes colonies more important and allows you to not run in to the city limit (or not run into it as quick)).

they did this becuase the game gets exponentially slower when it has to process 513 cities

Try a map size of 256 X 256 with no cities allowed on Desert or Tundra. That's just about right for the maximum limit, which is 512 BTW. With that size, you only have a few small areas that don't get developed, and those probably could be if you eliminated some of the AI's cities in crappy locations.
