Too many Vassals...

I recently started a game playing the Netherlands. Normal Speed, Continents, Emperor... I had some really nice starting positions and was on a smaller continent with Wang Kon. I wiped him out real early in the game, and started exploring.

So I find the large continent with five civs on it. The Ottomans have Vassalised two Civs, the Persians are alone, and Charlemagne has Alexander as his Vassal and has beaten him nearly into submission. I get optics and start funneling tons of guys over to the continent. I declare war on Charlemagne (He was the one I was in the best position to assault) and started taking over some pretty nice cities. About two turns into it, Mehmed had also DoWed on The Holy Romans. Four cities into my conquest, I try to make Charles my Vassel but he declines. I was highest on the power meter at this point. Instead he chooses to cast his lot with the Ottomans.

The Ottomans and Persians are "Friendly" with each other, and I can't get the Persians to budge. the Ottomans are now way ahead on the power meter and I am falling behind in the tech race due to my expensive new Holy Roman cities. I've investigated the armies of the Ottomans and there is no way I can successfully fight them and their vassals. Not to mention they went on to sign a defensive pact with the Persians.

Anyone have any advice what to do in this type of situation. It's happened to me twice now (Although it was quite some time ago since the first time).

Turn your overseas cities into a colony. Direct them to research your backfill techs and trade with them. Give the colony all of your obsolete units and make sure they have gold.. be it from resource trades, tech trades, or just give them some -- The AI gets really really cheap unit upgrades which will prop up the colony's military and cut down on your own costs. Get your stack a medic and have yourself a nice, bloody war.
