I am concerned that with success the GOTM staff might become swamped with work. Noting that the results of GOTM 19 aren't out yet. Would it help, Mister Cracker, it you had more volunteers? I would pitch in if I had any skills you could use.

Perhaps you could reply and let folks know if you need more help?

OTOH, sometimes volunteers just slow things up. :D

Psst, patience. Last month's results didn't come out until the 11th, and around the 10th seems to be typical. It's even now only just a few hours into the 10th in the Western Pacific.

Yes, you are right. I must have confused the QSC release date with the full game results date. At any rate, I am not known for my patience around here. Can't wait to see how Sir Pleb and Ribannah scored with their excellant games.

I wouldn't mind seeing my rank too! :D

You will be rewarded with the results soon. With so many games this month it does take a bit more time to sort and review them. We had a new record in submissions breaking the old record by quite a bit.

A lot of the delay is in corresponding with players to get resubmissions. Sometimes the saves become corrupt in transit, uploads get cut off, ect. We try to give players enough time to respond so that their results can be included.

The actual checking, renaming, and packaging of the saves is quite time consuming, but not the limiting factor.

Yeah, I noticed that. I rank (and play) worst and worst each month and I'm still sixth in the Global Ranking
I guess I should expect a change of 20 or so places ... downwards.

Aeson what is the official view on the global rankings? Are they seen as worthwhile? Are they in the process of being phased out?

The change to the jason scoring system appears to have been a master stroke as demonstrated by the huge increase in competitors in this months GOTM. Is the global ranking system guilty of turning people off from the GTOM as was apparently the case with the old scoring system?

Personally I like the Global Rankings.

I should answer that the de-emphasis on the global ranking in the past 6 weeks has been my choice without much input from the other staff.

In general the Global ranking is a fantastic system to recognize cummulative performance on a broad basis.

As we have implemented the Jason scoring system, its impacts will filter through into the Global Ranking system and you will see us refer to the general GR positions more frequently. Prior to Gotm17 when the Jason score was first implemented, you would see that frirst and second place finishers in each GOTM recieved almost twice as many global ranking points as players in teh 8th through 115th positions this old system gave a significantly unfair weight to winners only rather than recoginizing top performers across all of the top positions as we now do.

Because the global ranking scores are effected by a lingering time effect of games that go back in history for 6 to 9 months it just takes afew months for their effects to fade away. Changes in the interim time period are more a reflection of the transition of systems than they might be a true reflection of raw player performance. This is not intented to take anything away from the fact that we are seeing an increase in player success and performance across all skill levels even after all aspects of difficulty and game design are normalized out.

Ahhh...if I am understanding you correctly cracker. You have chosen to down play the Global rankings while the jason system is being implemented to give the established community of GOTMers opportuinity to adapt
Therefore they will be less likely to feel alienated by the changes and any abberrant scores that are thrown up during the transition process.

Very cunning cracker...I have just underlined the rule I have about not playing cards with engineers;)

BTW, when will the Global Rankings be updated? Or is this a bad question? ;)

EDIT: Sorry, I'm a dumb guy with bad eyes and I didn't notice they've already been updated... Sorry...

I like the way in which the new global rankings are organised into pages. It is now my ambition to get from the second page and onto the first.:) Congratulations Darkness on being in the green:goodjob:
The link on the updated global ranking thread still takes you to the post GOTM 17 rankings page rabies if you click on the link on the new results page it should take you to the new global rankings.
Karasu the comment I made about not playing cards with engineers is to do with my aversion to losing money to a group of people who are trained and paid to think ahead.:) Scientists and other groups are welcome to analyse and fit curves to how I empytied thier wallets;)

Sorry, the global rankings were updated last night and then I got distracted playing with our new database before making it public. The rankings for month 19 can be found here:

http://gotm.civfanatics.net/rankings/1global19.php

Once the database is fully functional, the rankings will always be available at the index.php of that directory listing. Might be a few months before that happens though. Until then (well, even then too), the rankings can be found by using the link on the upper left portion of any GOTM website page.

where is the link to explain the formula for the global rankings?

Not implemented yet.. (allusion to the title of this thread... or to our laziness ;) )

The search function for the forums being down is terrible... I'll go looking for the thread with the explaination (need to do it anyways to add that link...)

EDIT: it helps that cracker starts about 90% of the threads lately... all I have to do is scan the thread starter column to find one of the 2 I'm responsible for... If you're wondering, we ended up using '6789', and have since combined the QSC and QSC timeline entries.
