Well, in all my games I played lately I have got good starting locations and landd to expand on. But when I get to the meieval era there is just to many things that I have too do: Spread my state religion, research astronomy and settle he new world (playing terra), "just one more wonder of the world", settle the nearby islands, create an army and attack Washington.
And what happen then? Tokugawa declares war on me.
All my games who strt very well seems to always end up in a mess.
Do you have any tips?!?

Focus!

Make a plan for winning the game, pick one or two goals on the path to victory, and work towards those games. Spacerace/Culture: Do you really need to colonize the new world? Conquest: Do you really need that wonder? Does you really need to spread your religion? etc.etc.

agree with the above post. but to save you some time, forget everything except expanding your army. toku won't attack you if you're too powerful, and even if he does who cares.

spreading religions can wait, settling the new world won't crush washington, wonders are overrated and those islands are probably not really worth it. they have no production.

Terra and some of the water maps make for a lot more to do because of all the extra settling you have to do. If you want to cut down your workload, skip the Terra maps.

Head for a domination victory using drafted rifles and a Globe city draft/turn pump.

That way you can focus all you development down to that end.

Have one city only building troops and siege all game to keep away the Tokus of the world.

Isn't there an option to automate missionaries? That way you build them, and they auto spread your religion.

CTRL-O opens up the options menu. there is a box you can check to automate missionaries and corporate executives

Playing on Warlord, I am finding it a waste to try to get most of the early wonders, it seems the AI always gets them. So I decide on late game wonders I want and beeline to them. I spend the early game fighting the barbarians , building my military, and improvements, I'm still trying to grok city specialization. i don't worry much about colonizing the other continents, I'll just send a ship and a scout or explorer when I can.If I can, I usually do colonize a small island in between continents just to use as a way station, and set it up to produce miliraty units. I don't even bother deploying if DOW'ed in the early game from another continent, usually just keep watch for ships, get a friend over there to fight them, or just wait a few turns and sue for peace.

All the time? How to avoid falling behind in production? This city has to build Forge, Factory and Heroic Epic someday.

Whip/Chop/buy a forge, Maoi?, Factory, H.E., Ironworks etc... Don't bother building any city improvement which doesn't directly increase hammers in your production city(ies)....

Ok first off. First guy to new world, who is able to settle conquer barb cities, can establish colony after 3 cities are taken. Then he can free him, establishing a loyal vassal, who can expand, take new world, prevent other ai from landing/taking it, in addition to providing you with points for stuff.

Plus you can give him whatever religion you are running and he will spread it.

Two. There will be wars. You want to establish a defensive perimeter of 2-3 cities in the outer shell 3-5 in the inner shell of that perimeter, that way you get to defend least imporant cities first.

Three. Having your own religion, is a two edged sword, it gives you limited cultural advantage, but at the same time prevents you from picking a popular religion to follow, if you do that you can get allies in war agaisnt Tokugawa.

Don't rush for Astronomy. You will not be able to successfully establish enough to start a successful independent vassal, till gunpowder. I waited to do that till rifling... So he has riflemen as soon as you liberate him. Not to mention, don't forget to give him up to date on techs. such as assembly line, he is not going to beat you to pentagon regardless:), as his research,a nd build points, will suck at first and he will be expanding. Keep (1-3 cities on islands or in the new world, give the rest to your ai vassal as you liberate them.) Take ownership after conquest, go to domestic screen, liberate from there, get additional bonus with him.

Join factions, to be able to have help when attacked, until you are strong enough... Establish at least 5 cities by 0 AD. Spread as many religions in them as you can, after you get metal casting/forges and monotheism. That way you can build multiple monasteries in one city, giving you both scientific and cultural edge against bordering opponents, who will have only 1-2 religions in their cities early on. For Tokugawa, you need two rear echelon cities which will be geared up for troop production. And a third as a mixed backup.

Produce a military unit or two military units after every building (preferably once having barracks there already), (this will go especially fast once you have forges). Have 1-2 8 unit stacks with mixed specialized units.. That will give you enough to beat Tokugawa off. Use artillery and least experienced units first in attack/counter attack. If they die they die, use more experienced units to build up an elite corps of your future army. Remember to replenish newbie units, and upgrade experienced ones when you have the chance. Have generals join military building cities. Have one of the military building cities build heroic epic and westpoint, both are national wonders. This way you will need two generals less in that city.
First five generals go into cities as instructors.
Try this, if you have any questions, do ask.

Rushing astronomy can do wonders to the economy though, especially if you have the lighthouse and/or are Carthaginian.

plus it opens up the observatory. I always have my eyes on the +25% research buildings: Library w/ Writing, University & Oxford W/ Education, Observatory W/ Astronomy, and the spaceship labs W/ superconductors.

build more troops

haah, best post ever.

Let the AI build the wonders and take them at the point of a sword... and some catapults. Or use espionage to bring their culture down.
