Atari had the better machines, Commodore had the better marketing.... :mischief:

This sounds like a fairy tale.

But i better stop to talk about Ataris, it seems, the most moderators have one and i want not to be banned. :D

Padma said it for me.. I used to sell and repair Commodore machines. They ALWAYS were breaking down. Particularly the disk drive going out of alignment. At Software City in Syracuse, NY USA we sold 5 times as many Atari systems then we did Commodore.

Myself I had a hard transitition from Atari days to the IBM style of PC. Today my son and I have our own Computer business. We build custom gaming rigs, hotbox or tricked out systems are our speciality. I am new to PC's only had one for about 10 years now.

Had to love that flat membrane keyboard eh? :D

It's nice to hear that. At my scool time, there was only one Atari guy and i can tell you, he had no good life with it. ;)
But without jokes, Commodore sells more on the europe continent as at the US side. And my C-64 works now since 17 years without any crashes. Also my Amiga 500 which i bought 4 or 5 years later. The games, software and magazin support was also even better than for the Atari. Some Magazins are still alive and you can find many many sites for Commodore 64.

I agree with you on the sales of Commodores in some locations. They had a much better marketing strategy then the dummies at Atari did. I met the majority of them when I was involved with hardware and software DEV for the Atari series.

They did finally make the improvements needed for the C-64 and the one that superceded it the name escapes me now. Where do you think Amiga came from? :D Atari R&D guys who failed to sell their idea when the former C-64 managers bought Atari. They did not feel Amiga was worth gambling on. (DUMB very DUMB!)

Atari still lives on in fact we hope to host the Classic gaming show next year at our Gaming center we hopefully will be opening sometime in 2005. C-64 had the best sound going at the time. Amiga still is one bad computer now the Video Toaster many TV stations still use it to this day.

I feel right at home with former Atari owners I had no clue I would stumble upon so many. Today I own a nice 3GIG P4 upgrading my GE-Force 4200 Ti to the latest greatest Nvidia. It is good to see C-64 owners as well. My BBS I used to run for 8 years back in the 80's supported Atari, C-64, Amiga and Apple. :D

I would post in it I had a lot of friends who owned The C-64. The only issues I had was how you loaded programs and the horrible problems with the first runs of the drives. At least 5 times as many programs were produced for that computer line compared to Atari. :D

Moderator Action: Much as I enjoy reminiscing, this thread is for talking about how old (or young!) we are. ;) If we want to relive our Atari/Commodore times, please start another thread, in the Computer Talk forum. :)

Us old folks sometimes drift off topic  . Thanks for bearing with us &
getting us back on track :goodjob: .

speaking about the comps we own previously is linked to our ages, can you imagine a todays teen praising the Commodore or the Atari or the TRS or the Apple II ? OK some slipped off the tracks but without any intention to fool the subject of the thread. It's one more proof if needed that Civ is for ever and stands the test of time!

I thought about it when I posted the last message on it. I agree it is ancient history anyways. Good to have so many Old time gamers at this website. I feel at home here more then any other place.

Sorry heading off topic so far as I did. I think I started it and will refrain from doing it again. :D It does prove how great a game the civ series is with so many older players!!

i started playing when i was 8...now im 13 and i sit at the computer at 2 AM sipping my coffee (im serious, no joking here) :coffee:

oh if your wondering when i sleep spanish class is my nap time :goodjob:

I started playing Civ2 when I was 11 and became addicted to the game ever since. We had a thing call 'civnet' at school where we would play against other students...it was pretty cool. I'm now 19 and playing civ3 and lovin' it.

Apology to all Moderators and CFCler for the short excurs through history.

Look to the table of the poll and you understand why. It's our live and if someone ask about it, it all brakes out.

I was 24 when Civilization hit the PC and suffered three periods of barely contained madness: Civ, CivII and Civ3. :crazyeye:

Worst thing is, even after spending all that time and nearly loosing one girlfriend to Civ, I still suck at all versions of Civ! Still... Once or twice a year the urge overpowers me and I just HAVE to find those cd's and play Civ3 every evening a couple of weeks.

Well, for that girlfriend... I dumped her and married a real Civ-playing female nerd! :goodjob:

-i'm <gasp!> 37, have been playing this series for 10 years and don't imagine i'll ever stop. it's the most absorbing, fascinating game mechanism i've ever seen. thanks Sid :)
