I see different number of total war games. Which is the best game? What are the differences other then the era in which the game is played? I never looked into computer games other then civilization 4/warlords. Can some people post which is their favorite game and some reasons why?

From the titles midieval total war seems to catch my eye though.:D

P.S. I am probably going to get one of the game in a couple of weeks when i get my paycheck.

There all good but for those with limited budget RTW is probably the best game currently along with Total realism and Waringkingdom Mods.

Shogun was great but shows its age now
MTW also good but found it a little sameie
RTW big leap forward.
RTW: BI is not bad
RTW: A is not worth getting

Get Medieval: Total War 2 if your computer can run it. If not, get Total War:Eras package, it includes all Total War games but not Medieval 2.

Shogun Total War: great at the time, only played the demo so I wouldn't really rely on my opinion too much here.

Shogun Total War: Mongol Invasion: Never played it, never heard any reviews from credible friends (or any friend-based reviews for that matter).

Medieval Total War: Good, kind of low on the graphics side of things, but all in all still pretty decent.

Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion: Never played it, but from what I hear, trying to fight off the Vikings early on is brutal (according to a friend, they come in great numbers, and well equipped).

Rome Total War: Much better Graphically, a whole host of cool units. Very annoying Senate, and there is a tendency for enemies to brutally gang up on you. Not too hard to deal with, but still a nuisance.

Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion: Didn't have the cash, so I downloaded the Rome Total Realism Mod. That added a whole host of new factions (a good mix of "civilized" and "barbarian" factions), new units, and removed the annoying Senate. RTR satisfied my need for more barbarians.

Rome Total War: Alexander: Again lacked the proper fiscal surplus required for the acquisition of this game.

Medieval Total War 2: Most visually appealing of them all. If you've got the computer, get this game! From what I've seen it combines the visual aspects of RTW (on steroids) along with timeline of MTW. Can't do much better than that.

I hope this helps somewhat. But despite what we say, take the one that appeals to YOU most.

I am going to dowload the free gold demo for medieval 2 total war. If I like it I will get this game.

Thanks for the help.

Edit: Well nevermind. Cant play medieval 2 total war. My poor computer just about died. The game was really laggy. Time to look at another Total War game.

Go to options -> advanced and get the graphs all to low settings, take of shadows , grass and so on. Update your card graphics drivers and go for it. I´ve been able to put Rome Total War on a Geforce MX 440, so i trust you´ll be able to this also on your "old cpu".

Just about the only games i've ever devoted major time to are Civ (1, 2 and 4) and the Total War series. I think the PERFECT game is probably a combination of these two. Civ's building and tech advances etc make for rich strategical choices but the battles leave something to be desired. TW's real time battles can be awesome, but the strategic game lacks the depth of Civ.

Which TW to choose? I would't presume to advise - it's personal choice, interest in the era and so on. You might like to dip a toe in the water with Shogun which must be available dirt cheap these days, and if you like it you'll probably want to move on up to one of the others. I loaded up Shogun just a couple of months ago and found I still loved it! To be honest I think you'll probably like any one of the 3 you care to try.

Differences - well they did attempt to beef up the strategy part of the game after Shogun. It's pretty good but personally i find it hard to cope with as there aren't enough info screens to manage everything efficiently. However, any negative comments are really only nit-picking as far as I'm concerned - I found all 3 games to be a blast. The games are well served I think by dedicated websites (like this one for Civ). The later ones add much more in terms of units and so on, Rome included such gems as flaming pigs (to frighten the elephants!) and "wailing women" amongst other weird and wonderful things!

I'd better not say any more otherwise I'll be loading these games up again and they've consumed enough of my life already ...

yea thats what i did in the end and played the demo.

Runs good that way.

Recap of the battles in gold demo.

on 2nd try had victory at the battle of agrincourt(or something like that)

on 2nd try also had a victory when you are th holy roman empire

on like my 4th try beat the aztecs at the battle of otumba.(that was really difficult or at least the most difficult battle)

My favorite was the battle of otumba.

I killed like 1300 men and captured another 400. The last Aztec general was on fighting on the front lines along with 3 different Aztec units against my 2 units of mercs and swordsmen. To kill the last aztec general I had him targeted by musketmen and charged him from behind with a very weak cavalry charge. The aztec general attempted to leave because of damage done. Symbolically I had charged him with Cortez and killed him.
