Trade bug with technology

Had an odd circumstance occur to me. I'm looking at the tech lists for all my contacts, and I see that one civ has ironworking, but another civ does not (but has bronze working). So, I pay through the teeth to get ironworking, then when I go to trade it to the other civ, it won't let me!

So I started another game, and the same thing happened with Republic.

Grrr, this is extremely annoying...

You know I've noticed the same thing. I will swear I see that (for example) the Russians have a tech the Aztecs don't, so I will buy it from the Russians, then go to trade it to the Aztecs, only to find out they suddenly have it.

I've noticed this a few times. It started after the patch. Anyone else notice that the AI seems to be trading 'out of turn'?

Not doubting your experiences, but nope.... tech trading in the manner you describe has continued to be quite lucrative in my most recent post-patch game.

Dont have any suggestions. :(

perhaps they have built the great library, and when you trade the new knowledge they get it from the library, since now there are two civs having it.

Not to sound like a dumbass out of place(ouch, toolate) but how do you check their tech lists :( ?

I miss civ1

To check the tech list, go into the diplomacy menu and click 'Technology'. A list of techs that the foreign government has (if any) will become visible.

nope, it's not a Great Library problem... I'll admit it's weird, and I put if off to inattention until the other guy said he had the same problem. Next time I think it happens, I'll load from autosave and check it out.

Merry Christmas.

I haven't had any problems with techs, but i have with communications. If I pay for communications with civs that I KNOW the other's around me dont have, and then try to sell contact with my new friends to them, they all of a sudden have it. In the middle of my turn even. It isn't very important, but it was annoying when i tried it the first time.

This is definitely a new thing that went in with the 1.16 patch. It happens with both communications and techs during your turn. It's almost as if there is some sort of order for the AI civs and if you trade something to someone who is 3rd or 4th in the order (just as an example) then the civs who are #1, 2 and 3 automatically get it.

I haven't been able to detect any definitive pattern for when/why this happens. Any Firaxis employee want to enlighten us? :)

I tried to attach a .sav file so anyone could download and look at the problem, but the file is too big. Oh well, this is what you could have done if you had the file:

1. Go to the diplomacy screen and check out what you have that the Russians don't. You'll see Radio, Combustion.

2. Go check out what Germany needs. You'll see Radio, Combusion. Ask what Germany will give you for combustion, and take it.

3. Go back to Russia. What's this, she only needs Radio now!? But I wanted 100 gold/turn from her too...

I'll check out the offical bug thread and re-post there so Firaxis can see it, if someone hasn't already posted there.

Any doubters can e-mail me vale@tranquility.net and I'll send over tradebug.sav

I've wondered why civs seem to advance at about the same rate with their technology no matter what, give or take a few techs.

It seems the game may be artificially maintaining some tech parity by auto exchanges between civs. I regard this as both a glitch and unfair. And stupid.

Here's the file.

I believe it was a bug, not intentional.

I've discovered you can sell the advance to Russian and then Germany, but not Germany and then Russia. Also, when I went back to playing the game, I discovered that after I sold the tech to Russia, Germany only offered me 1/2 the gold he had offered before. Apparently, Germany sold to Russia in between turns for 50 gold/turn, and that's why Russia suddenly acquired the tech.

Yes it is true if you snooze you lose.

meaning if you don't take the first offer they will lower the bid next time, maybe because the tech is not in such rarity anymore, so not so valuable, the more civs that have it, the less it is worth, that is logical.

Are you sure Russia didn't have the great library?? and therefore once germany got it , that is two civs and so russia get it automatically. i would have downloaded to check the file, but right now i am too busy, so i didn't check it before i made this suggestion.:)

I agree with you that the more people that have a tech, the less valuable it should become. But that's not the case here. The saved game proves that Germany is trading out of turn to Russia.

Great Library becomes obsolete after Education, and that was discovered long ago.

checked that game Mark, germans and russians did seem to share the tech, I was impressed how much the germans offered for it by the way, I checked all the other civs, and no other civs had already traded it, only those two civs, so there must have been a reason.

Can I just ask why you have your happy tax at 0, when you have over 13000 in the bank, and growing at over 500 per turn? you could be using some of that excess to be getting "we love the king" and all it's bonuses.

I am curious as to what your strategy is with all that excess money, it blew me away when i saw it

I have long had the impression that things happen with other civs during my turn. Maybe the comp is just doing things that *should not* affect any of my decisions during idle time while I am furiously thinking, in order to speed up the game.
Like you get a message "We have received word that xxx has completed ... " If I am working on that, and still 20 turns away, or even 3 or 4, it doesnt really matter when they announce it. Saves time? Good.
We know they do 'trade' tech to each other, Makes sense there would be a pre-set trade order, it has to go down the list. Maybe like units moving, it goes down one turn and up the next?

In the sticky thread on issues remaining after the patch there is much discussion about the AI trading out of turn. I seem to remember a response from a Firaxian that it was indeed a problem and would be corrected in the next patch.

BTW, where is that one?

Cutiestar,

I've never messed with the happy tax before, thanks for the tip. I'll check it out next time.

To answer your question, I was using that money to bribe everyone to be my friend so I could get my first diplomacy win. Not that it did me much good, my good friend the Romans built the UN a turn before I could finish it @#!!!

How can you play the game without 'messng' with the happy tax?

I put all my citiies on Governor for Happiness and that works really well. But, I can't figure out how you manage without Happiness points.
