Hey guys its BuilderFTW,
First off, I am really enjoying Brave New World, especially the new trade route system. I like how it makes you interact with neighboring civs for your gold output. That being said I think there a couple of things that are kinda strange about the way that the trade routes work, I dont think any of these issues are game breaking it just seems like the system could work a bit better.
1. Early game internal trade routes: right of the bat with a granary and a boat you can create ENORMOUS food per turn. You get more food than from the hanging gardens. It feels like the +8 food per turn is a little much. This could put you behind if you dont have a nice sea route to connect your cities (or if you don't want to build an early city at all because you miss out on a lot of food), which brings me to point 2.
2. Land Trade vs Sea trade: currently sea trade routes give double the amount of a land route, whether internal or external, and in addition, they have greater range (limited to sea of course). It feels like land routes are a second best option, as in you should only get them if you have no other routes available, or if someone is landlocked. Late game I almost never have land routes. This seems somewhat unfair for a civ that starts landlocked without good sea access.
3. Late game gold: You get a LOT of gold late game from trade routes. I've only played a couple of games, but in those few in the later eras (about industrial on) it starts raining gold. I have 200+ gpt and the next couple of ais tend to as well. As a consequence, basically all the city states are aligned with someone and I will frequently dump 1k (or more) into a city state to make them my ally. I don't feel like the city state system really handles this amount of gold well, with the amount of gold I am spending it feels like there should be a 2k and 5k option for spending. I am not sure if there is anything really wrong with the late game gold, it is certainly a big change and could screw over a civ that has a hard time making those 30+gpt sea routes.
4. Guessing values: - *edit - I missed the available routes section
Again, I like the expansion and trade routes, it just seems like there a couple of things that could be cleaned up. What do you guys think?
