Is there anyway to actually see what your active (or potential) trade routes are between you and any other nation (or indeed between any two AI nations)?

I understand that you need road/rails to connect your capital to their capital in order to be able to trade. I also understand that you need a harbour and an explored path between your harboured city and the target's harboured city to trade overseas.

But when does an emeny ship block a trade route oversea?

How can you see where your trade routes are in order to protect them or see where your enemy's are in order to block them?

You can see possible trade routes on the F4 screen. For AI-AI trade, you need to have an embassy with at least on of the AIs involved. Btw, You can only see if they trade, but not which goods are traded for. You have to figure that out yourself.
The exact location of a trade route is not displayed anywhere, as you only need one possibility and there are usually a lot. Trade routes may also lead through other civs territory as long as you or your trading partner are not at war with that civ. A trade route is only blocked if all possible ways are interrupted. This occasionally happens on trade routes using coastal tiles with barb ships or hostile boats sailing around. Still, you have to figure yourself when this is a threat.

Does an enemy ship have a zone of control for blocking trade routes?

Say you had a trade route oversea between two continents. The explored tunnel was five tiles thick. If an enemy ship appears dead centre of this tunnel, does it block the entire trade route or would it need to have five ships in a row to do it.

Since you can't possibly know what territory and enemy has explored, you can only guess at blocking their trade routes I presume...?

In the early going (till navigation and/or ... whats the other one?) you can only trade on COASTAL tiles. Coastal is hardly ever more than 1 and i have never seen more than 2 tiles from land.

So just the 1 ship will do....

...even Barbarian galleys. Be very, very, careful with coastal trade routes, lest your reputation be shot by a wandering Barbarian!
