Trade Routes

It seems I am unable to establish sea trade routes...
Can someone tell me what the initial range was again?

Also, after discovering sailing before animal husbandry, I have one availabe trade route but cannot build the cargo ship until I research the latter because it said there are no available trade routes... Intended?!

45 range for cargo ship, I believe.

And I haven't encountered not being able to build the cargo ship before AH. You sure it wasn't because there was no valid destinations for the ship?

Definitely there was when their range is 45

I think it is
Base
10 for Caravan
20 for Cargo ship

+10 Caravan with combustion
+10 Cargo Ship with Compass
+10 Cargo Ship with Refrigeration

then
+50% Caravan with Caravanssary
+50% Caravan with Arabian UA
+50% Cargo Ship with Harbor

It will only let you build a caravan/cargo ship if
1. you have an available trade route in your maximum trade route count
2. you have some trade route that you could possibly make (if you don't know of any coastal cities, you can't form a sea trade route)

Check the trade overview to get a listing of all your possible trade routes.
