trading maps

Has anyone here ever actually gotten the A1 to trade maps with them.
I have even tried out of curiosity to trade with a very small insular civ when I had explored 75% of the globe. They still said they didn't need my worthless maps.
I also wonder if the A1 civs trade between each other.

If you are allied with another nation or the relationship is pretty good enemy nations will often share their maps with you . Im not sure if comp nations trade maps between each other , i have seen that often in SMAC , not in Civ II yet .

Yeah, you can trade with the AI. You need to have a good relationship. And usually not be #1 in the world or they won't cooperate. I was #1 and had the UN. The Souix came out of nowhere and I couldn't find them (I killed the indians). Instead of doing a global search, I decided to meet in the UN chambers with Sitting Bull, and 12 techs later I got their map and killed them. My point? Giving gifts butters them up for destruction.

I think you need map making before you can trade. Also, if you hit the F3 key it shows the civs and their opinion of you. I'm not sure what it needs to be but they have to have a pretty good opinion of you to trade.

I'd say the attitude problem is why they rarely trade with me. I have never let my enemies attitude toward me dictate my actions.
I also never ally with anybody. I have found this seriously cramps my strategy. I love the surprise attack, and at first I thought making a strategic alliance was the perfect thing, and I took this route once. I could move my units right up to their cities and nothing was ever said. I proceeded to fill their nation with my troops and when I was ready to launch my major offensive, I was informed that I had to enter negotiations to dissolve the alliance. Once I had ended it all my troops were automatically removed to my own territory. It was to have been the greatest military move ever, nearly 50 years in the planning. I had estimated two rounds to eliminate them entirely. I found out the alliance wasn't as convienient as I had thought haha.

I hate how the AI negotiates:

-they don't trade maps.
-they always dissolve alliances after a few turns
-when you have an undefended city, they immediately take it over. eg. I had a city in the beginning. Egytians take it over. The next turn, they want to negotiate a peace treaty. You should be able to negotiate with them from your cities without troops.

Anyways, back to the maps subject. I found out, by cheating/experimenting, that the AI does not explore effectively. They always send a unit in one direction, so they end up with a long strip of explored territory, istead of a circle, etc. So it's not worth trading maps.

I agree. I used the cheat menu once just to 'check up' on other tribes as time went on. They do some pretty stupid things (understatement) one of which, as you said, is exploring in a big straight line.

How do you guys usually explore? I tend to follow coastlines, and work in a circle from my capital.

First, when i only have a few warriors, i send them to explore in circles, because mountains, hills, etc. don't affect their movement. Then I send my horses straight in any direction to find another tribe.

It all depends on the ai liking oyu or not. But if you want to trade maps dont be to strong becaus if you are to strong the wont have anything to do with you. I was playing a very good game and the ai was far behing me - everyone had the attitude=Hostile the only reason i had peace with them, was because of the UN

Getting the AI to trade maps is easy, but "you don't get owt for nowt". What are you prepared to give in return? Give 'em tech and money first, as much as it takes to wind them up to Worshipful, and then make the offer. Rarely fails. But as I say, do you want to make those kind of gifts?

Here's a tip that will get you most of the map you want without giving anything away. It just won't stay on the screen for more than a turn and it isn't detailed. Still, it's free... Have a spy go investigate a city. While she's there, click on the "Map" button, and you see the world - in summary - as that civ sees it. That can save an awful lot of sailing and you keep your techs to yourself!

True. But hey look, I said it was free, I didn't say it was perfect!

If you can't get a map trade, part of the problem is where to send your scouts to look. You can send them everywhere of course, but who wants to explore thousands of square miles of empty ocean? You'll get the info you want quicker if you send your scouts to roughly the right places and you can use your enemy's summary map to help find those right places.

Cities appear on my summary maps, although they are very hard to see, esp. certain colors. I would assume they would show up on another civ's summary map as well. This is a good tip. I'll try it out sometime.

I believe I'll just stick to exploring for myself. I dislike the idea of handing over so much only to get so little in return.
I have 3 basic rules I play by when it comes to handing out knowledge:
1. Never give the AI anything.
2. If they have a tech you don't have, steal it, regardless of the consequences.
3. Any civ that steals a tech from me will pay dearly for it, in cities and blood for several years.

Let me make the superstitions on a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.

My strategy is completely different. I trade every tech with every tribe. That way, I'll have the combined techs of all the tribes, while each tribe only has my techs.

I don't know why they keep maps such clandestine keepsakes. The Egytians had one city, and I explore the whole world, still, they wouldn't trade.

I have no problems trading maps with AI on levels below king. usually your so far ahead of them that you can just butter them up with a few tech's and there you have it. I mean if your in the industrial rev. and they still don't have the wheel and literacy than I believe it is perfectly fine. Especially when you plan on destroying there pathetic exuse for a civ in a few more turns anyway.
However, on king and above I rarely get the chance.
