The Newbie Nightmare
Okay, major problem. Until recently I was using Zone Alarm Pro without any problems. Then I upgraded to version 3.7.159 and after the next reboot I couldn't get any .exe files working. The files would execute, but they wouldn't show up on screen. For example, I wouuld try and open Notepad and I could double click it and it would show up as a running process, but no notepad on screen. Same with every other .exe file. I then discovered that if I exited ZoneAlarm (which I had initially set to start with Windows 2000 Pro SP3) everything worked fine. So I uninstalled Zone Alarm Pro, and ran a virus scan (detected none, even after updating definitions) but there will still some problems. The recycle bin didn't work properly and active desktop had been turned off and I couldn't get it back.
So I backed up all my data and reformatted the hard drive (NTFS since my OS is Win2k) and I just installed the latest version of ZA Pro again (3.7.159) and I got the same problem again, so I had to uninstall. So I then tried installing Symantec Personal Firewall. At first, it seemed to install fine, but then just at the end the installer performs a roll-back! At first I thought it was because I had AVG Antivirus running, so I exited that and tried again, but to no avail.
