Try1 - The Newbies!

Gah! Too many things going on, I didn't get time to post yesterday. Have to head to work now so I can't look at the save :(

Assuming nothing else comes up *fingers crossed* I can look at it tonight, if you want to wait that long. It shouldn't be too big of a deal if you go ahead and play before then, though, because we're on a fairly straight path - we want a Domination victory: everything done (especially from this point) should be to further that goal.

Ah, I'm busy anyways. School's back, I've got a competition to study for, and when I can play games I'm usually on Mass Effect.

Carneios, I think I pretty much summed up what I have to say back at this post.

Just a few other notes...

- There's a barbarian maceman down in our southern territory, and we have an undefended city nearby...please be sure to kill the barb!
- Units units units! Get our good production cities churning out musketeers, trebuchets, and maybe a few other units, but due to the need to upgrade our defenses with new troops, I doubt you'll have time in your turnset to worry about that.
- I think we should build the Forbidden Palace in Athens instead of Uppsala.

Okay then i am fairly sure i did good, a few cities now have some better defenses and such

Turn 1:
I changed the forbidden palace from being built in Uppsala to Athens then traded drama to pericles for 140 gold, world map and stop trading with mehmed and also changed the silver trade with justinian from 7gpt to 10gpt and i added two musketeers to the build order of rheims.

Turn 2:
Our spy got found in Uruk and Nidaros built it's bank, started work on grocer.

Turn 3:
Nothing of importance occured.

Turn 4:
Chariot was killed by the Barb maceman, Lyons built a harbor, started work on bank, musketeer built in Rheims.

Turn 5:
Our spy was found in Mayapan, Musketeer kills barb maceman

Turn 6:
University was built in Paris, started building musketeers, Market in Persepolis, started Bank

Turn 7:
Bank built in Orleans, Started Grocer, Courthouse built in Marseilles, Started Markets, Musketeer Built In Rheims, Started Grocer

Turn 8:
Forbidden Palace built in Athens, Started Grocer

Turn 9:
Musketeer built in paris, continued building musketeers

Turn 10:
Grocer Built In Nidaros, Started University, Grocer built in Ligurian, started Bank

Turn 11:
Printing Press Researched, Started on Steel, Musketeer built in Paris, continued Musketeers, Grocer built in Athens, Started Bank

Turn 12:
Bank built in Uppsala, started Grocer

Turn 13:
Hit 20 million population Musketeer Built in Paris, continued Musketeers

Turn 14:
Bank built in Lyons, started Grocer, Given quest to build 9 castles

Turn 15:
Musketeer built in Paris, continued Musketeers, Grocer built in Rheims, started Bank

I hope that was a good enough report, i didn't think anything was worth a screenshot of and i can't actually think of anything else to say after that except that I have started on getting everywhere defended by at least four musketeers

Haven't looked at the save yet but it sounds fine, I'll post any comments or complaints later ;) :p

One note so far - we don't need 4 defenders in every city, just the ones nearest our borders. For the ones in the far east/southeast, we can get away with two. I just wanted to be sure we upgraded and weren't fighting gunpowder troops with a spearman!

Comments:
-----------
* Marseilles would be far better served by some lower level buildings (Granary comes to mind) than a Market at present
* ALL of our workers look to be fortified, squatting around and being lazy - I'm not sure if this is an artifact of the save, or if they are in fact doing nothing. Enlighten me please? :)
* I suppose I understand the desire to build Banks to improve the economy, but doing so in cities with very little gpt output is a waste of hammers.
* I think we need a development plan for Athens, Marseilles, and Chartres - I will work on this later (unless someone else volunteers) so it will be ready for the next person in line.
* Nidaros is producing scarcely more GPP/turn than Paris, which is rather sad as our intended GP factory - unfortunately without revolting to Caste System the only way to improve that number will dilute our point pool and possibly get us some great people we don't want. I would like to hear opinions for/against making that switch.
* We have a few unimproved resource tiles within our borders which should be farmed/plantation/etc to give us more resources to trade with, even if they aren't used by a city directly.
* Lyons, Rheims, and any other city we find ourselves using for a lot of troop production should probably build a stables once we get access to Cuirassers.
* Our stack-of-DOOM in Athens is plenty large enough to start our next war, as soon as we get some musketeers in there to defend the city once the stack moves out. Also, the city should probably build a theatre and a few temples to maintain happiness once all the troops leave!

"Complaints":
-------------
* I notice you didn't change the espionage point allocation as I suggested, I'm assuming you just forgot, but if not was there a reason?
* Why are we building commerce buildings in our two main unit production cities, Lyons and Rheims??

So, overall we're fine and we had a good few peaceful sets of building. Time to win this game! Here's my plan:

- Get some defense over to Athens ASAP (4 muskets at least), move our stack out and eliminate Sitting Bull (capture cities, he only has two)
- Our stack should never have to stop if we play things right, because we should be constantly reinforcing our border cities with troops from our core cities -> by doing this we can ship out all but minimal troops in the border cities just before the reinforcements arrive (two turns from the reinforcements getting there is a good number) and have a continual stream of new forces to replace our losses.
- We should have Sitting Bull dead, and Bismarck well on his way there, within the next set (I'll leave that in your hands, Rince ;) ). Our glorious general Mitchifer should be able to force Bismarck's capitulation and prepare, if not start right away, the war on Mehmed II.

With the espionage points i did in fact forget and as for the other complaint I just don't seem to be thinking right today and that also expllains most other things i did in that save that wasn't right :P

lurker's comment: you'd get more comments if you posted more screenies... :mischief: surprised this isn't over yet...

We had about a month + a week worth of downtime due to the winter holidays and all that. I imagine we'll be done in the next 4-5 rounds.

(I also imagine we could have finished with a much earlier victory, judging from my limited but rapidly growing experience with the GOTMs, but this is more a learning game than a speed/max score effort)

Two things: roster...

and, I've started the signup for Try2, have one more spot reserved for a player from this game (and you can of course grab an open spot, I just only have one more actually reserved). Feel free to go sign up!

All right, I took a look at the save, and I have a few comments:

  • I agree we need to get our workers to work - there's a good number of unimproved tiles surrounding Athens.
  • We should probably revolt to caste system at this point - I find that slavery is too expensive population-wise as the game goes on.
  • Don't forget that we have a great engineer in Paris. I would recommend waking him up so we don't forget about him. As for his use, maybe he should help us research replacement parts.
  • For our research - I suggest shooting for economics now to try to beat the AIs to the free great merchant. Then maybe steel (for cannons) or replacement parts (for lumbermills).
  • As for our next military target, I almost want to take the fight back to Mehmed, but I agree that Bismarck/Sitting Bull would probably be easier. I think that SB's two cities should be our first target in that case.

On research, I think we want to stick to pure military endeavors now - if it doesn't get us a new unit, we don't care about it. On that line, I think we should go ahead and get Steel, then whatever the new tech is that gets us Grenadiers, then we want Riflemen, Cuirassers, and onward if the game lasts that long, which I hope it doesn't.

Ok, so no word from Rince over 72 hours from the report of Carneios' turn. Mitchifer, if we don't hear from him by the end of tonight, you will be up.

All right, I should be able to play right before I head off to work. Unfortunately, I won't be able to take part in the discussion afterwards.

So what's the plan? Go after SB's cities first?
