TSG42 After Action Report

What can I say - I am a devious god :D! As long as Huracán doesn't outspy me I am happy

Hopefully I was useful - gotten a couple of random PMs about me appearing in peoples games :p

it was particularly poetic as I was playing as the Maya, haha.

As most said, an easy game. Sweden DoWed early and was wiped (left with a warrior and a worker). Turns out I don't quite understand how the war monger diplo modifier works as this caused the Celts and Austria to consider me a menace (I figured I'd be OK by leaving them alive, and as they DoWed...).

Stockholm made for a very nice Petra city. Spammed cities and had my religion everywhere (only the Celts founded one). Towards the end, I took all of Austria (my DoW) and she didn't have any suitable units to leave around. This, however, did not make anyone else think of me as a war monger... Got in over 5 RAs (with Siam, Greece, and England) and had a bit over 1500 bpt in the end.

Some pics of my game:
Killed Austria at turn 52 yay no diplomatic marriage crap!
I got DoF with Celt, Greece, Siam, and allies with all city states except Budapest? that died. Everyone voted for me including Elizabeth even though we denounced each other and went to war a few times.

Well I could have done better. As I was counting up scientist and trying to figure out when I could finish I did all that and miscounted so that I had 5 turns on Globalization. When I started the UN I had misremembered the number of hammers it took (thought it was 1000) and so I needed a second one. It took another turn to get the faith to buy one, then a turn to wait then I finally rushed, so I lost 3 turns there. That's also when I realized I hadn't utilized specialist at all the whole game....

I also briefly lost a city to Austria, and then quickly got it back and wiped them. However it took forever to take out Sweden. So a number of things slowed me down quite a bit.

now that i know the UN can be GE rushed i replayed from t240 and finished 11 turns faster, t274. oh well, ill put that to use on the next diplo challenge.

Ahhhhh, almost had a sub 200 win, got Globalization at turn 184.
Unfortunately I only had 1 enginer stored (I have used another for some not so important wonder :() and it left me 12 turn for the UN. I was thinging with a big capitol, it will be enough.

So it will be a tun 206/207 victory, if I have made my mind and finish it sometimes (I rage quitted after a quick save)

I went liberty rex 8 city, first GP is GProphet, and used happy religion.
Did not finish Libery ever as I always had better choice, and did not wanted another not free gp yet. At the end everything aligned +3 technology.

At the beginning it was a good thing to find a Maritime CC with my warrior and focus on barb killing, I got an ally very soon, even sooner before anyone told me to kill a barb camp.

Got attakced by Aus and Swe, killed both. Should not have done it, did not gave me mutch science and had unhappiness for a while.

Actually, I have rushed the Oracle with GE, and every policy was needed for sub 200. I think now, might be one less city would have done the trick. A few turs later having Globalization, but finishing Liberty would be still under 200.

I thought this would be a pretty easy game but my start was far from it. I felt like I had a really slow start because of the starting location (settled one step west on the marsh) and then Sweden caused me problems DoWing me early and had to waste money to buy some military to keep him off by capital. Lost my focus a bit there (although got Theology pretty fast). Didn't clear any jungles during my game.

Established 4 cities of my own and conqured Sweden and Austria and then settled a fifth one. War with Sweden took a while, had to focus on military techs here (steel+physics+gunpowder). Soon after Austria I went for the Celts as well. Conquered also England in the end. Puppeted all the cities in nice places, razed the other ones. Only had 1 RA (Greece) because of this warmongering (didn't kill anyone though, just took their cities), but that fired only after building the UN (and before the vote).

The end play went pretty smoothly: used 3 GSs in the end and build Oxford in for the last tech and had a GE ready for the UN.

Religion wise Celts also had a strong religion and I had chosen Tithe for my founder belief and struggled to get some foothold in the eastern part of the continent: Would have probably done better using that faith for Great Persons instead of Missionaries.
(Religion: Sacred Path / Tithe / Padogas / Religious Community).

Had almost all the CS as allies for the last 100 turns or so. Had 3-4 allies from around turn 60 (or 70).

It was nice to see this kind of starting location since I probably wouldn't have played this setup if it wasn't a GOTM-game. Might try to play this again with hopefully a more peaceful start so I don't lose my science-focus in the beginning. I feel that I should have the potential to do this in under 250 turns, but maybe I'm thinking too much of myself.

(Game crashed on turn 254 in Diplomacy screen after catching a Siamese spy so I had to use the autosave. And then it crashed again in the same situation, so had to use the same autosave again.)

EDIT: Did my second try, finished on turn 236. 4 cities of my own (3 at first and 4th around turn 120) and a late war against Austria around turn 200 (she was trying to convert my cities) which got me two puppets. So probably could have finished in ~250 turns with my first game without the early wars.

Slow start. 4 cities. Early wars against Austria and Sweden. No puppets, but Austria was so small that couldn't marry any CSs. In the end had 10 CS votes, also Sweden and Ram voted for the Maya civ.

I have pressed a few more end of turn. Saved 1 turn by rush bying Rec center and Hydro plan.
Still 11 turn worse that it could have been, if I plan my GEs or policies better.
No RAs.
At the end I had a short war with Alexander. He was asking for 54g/turn(!), and I was thinking it is 54 gold so I said yes. Next turn I realised this, I declared war... :)
Normally I would have reloaded this, but I think this is not permitted here even for mistakes like this, right?

You are correct, we do not permit reloads.

Pretty easy; though I'm just not that fast. Gustavus was the only one that bothered me with multiple wars until I finally took over his cities. Every city-state voted for me in the UN election, but no other civs did.

Care to offer some details about how to accomplish this?

its sometimes tough on t40 but you generally build one settler and rush-buy 2 more or you go for one free from liberty, one built, and one rush-bought. you can buy them by instantly selling your luxes, not waiting for a spare one, as well as any strat resources or gold per turn.

it is of course easier on easier difficulty settings, but that is the general way to do it.

As for planing:
The only plan is to prioritize science above everything else. So I beeline Education, Scientific theory and Plastics with the minimum amount of techs required and get the science buildings and fill them with specialists asap. I am not micro-ing any units except my workers so 30 secs per turn sounds about right. A bit longer when I have to renew my trading deals.

Another relevant thing here is that I built only 2 extra cities and the AIs never get mad in the early game(you are building cities too aggressively) and then they get massively outteched so they will never ever consider declaring war. Austria has been with "afraid" status in my game since turn 100 cos I made 3 crossbows.
be built with a great engineer.

Well, there's obviously a little more to it. I tried what you described and ended up finishing in 283 turns. As a relative beginner I'm obviously missing a few tricks still to advance through the tech-tree fast.

283 is only marginally faster than the 300 turns it took my 'official' try, in which I took out Sweden and Austria and had 8 cities. And the first time around I had a much more comfortable win, with 15 votes vs. just scraping through with 10 the second try.

I think the deciding factor may be the number of RAs you can sign. In my first game, Sweden and Austria were obviously out. And Boudicca could never be persuaded to an RA either, so I rarely had more than 2 RAs going on at any one time.

The second time I managed to avoid war altogether. But Sweden took out Austria, Boudicca never wanted be friends, nor Thailand. Who got whacked by England later anyway. Sweden also started taking out city-states. At some point I had to give Quebec a gatling gun to hold off a troop of sword men.

So maybe some luck is required too, being able to stay on good terms with enough AIs. And to boot, the AIs need to stay alive.

Both times I played this game I tried to obtain aluminum through Cape Town. But no matter what I tried, I didn't receive it. This despite that the tooltips state that the CS will share its resources when they are my ally.

Is this a bug?

Or is it because the CS itself didn't research aluminum yet? In which case it should have been made clear somehow. By not listing it in its info window for example. Now I was under the false impression that building a road to Cape Town would give me its aluminum.

Somehow something doesn't seem right.

Sure. Build order: Scout -- worker -- settler. Improved incense, immediately sold it to Sweden. Popped a 100g ruin, so on the turn incense was sold i had 500g for a settler. Settled the settler on top of copper and sold that instantly to Austria. That, plus small loan gave settler #4. Spices money bought worker #2. Worker #3 --> built. Worker #4 liberated from barbs. ;)

it is of course easier on easier difficulty settings, but that is the general way to do it.

Is it? Highest difficulty levels give you rich AI buyers from turn 20.

I think the deciding factor may be the number of RAs you can sign.

The deciding factor was his population. Drakar signed 0 research agreements ..

Really unhappy with how this game turned out.. I decided to go for Liberty instead of my usual Tradition tall style, it worked very well at start and I felt like I was going for sub t200 until t100ish. Then.. well, I played another session, not so sober this time.

Took me at least 30 turns of unconsicous next turn clicking to realize I was running into serious happiness problems AND, most importantly, that diplomatic victories are all about science... I had ignored the fact that I could have maximized science much, much earlier.

Some more fail with building the UN. Thanks for the game anyways, looking forward to improve on the next one.

welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :wavey:
