TSG86 After Actions

I manage to finish by peace diplomacy victory by turn 247.

I only settled 2 cities, first one as production and wonder city on the flood plain next to coast to grab all the marble and stone. I save the coastal hill and copper for petra.
Too bad there is no MoH DLC :( .
And 1 more next to mountain river to the north beside cow as science city.

Everything went smooth sailing. I managed to grab all the wonders I want early on(GL,HG,Petra,Oracle,Parthenon,Hagia Sophia,CI,Borobudur).

I filled out tradition, and then some patronage, full rationalism after unlocking, freedom.
For religion : Desert Folklore,Tithe, Divine Inspiration (+2 fa each WW), Religious Community (+15% production), Itenerant Preacher.
World Congress all went in my favor.
1st WC, my World Religion proposal passed. 2nd WC, world ideology passed. 3rd WC cultural heritage site passed.

Reach information era/UN by turn 216.

There is almost zero war on the planet. Only a little conflict between france vs arab, and poland vs austria. The only friend I have to sign RA is arab. The other were either guarded or neutral with me. It is very hard to have DoF because of competing CS ally :(.

By around turn 200, I already have abundance gold (300gpt) dunno where to spend. No civ to sign RA with, already allied all CS, and buy all key building. I did not build any colosseum and barrack.

Maybe I should have share some of fortune to have good relationship with other civ, but I am too afraid that they will backstab and backfire to me.

I killed everyone except Arabia and gave him the cities I don't need. I even had to give him poland cap with colossus and GW as I didn't want to increase the research cost.

I am surprised when seeing the map before reading this. How the hell Arab end up at the left part of the continent. :crazyeye:

Going Liberty instead of Tradition took me longer and I certaintly didn't grow as much, but I did take control of the map at around turn 150 or so with about 20 cities and I think I finished with 25 or so. After I took back my cities I lost and everyone's cap except Poland the game was basically me just clicking and trying to get to the info era to trigger WL vote. I won the 1st vote but it took me too many WC sessions and thus the win at turn 311.

I did four cities, no war at all. Everything was easy - I had all city states allied half of the game. The only problem was slow research. I had Edu too late, about turn 120 - focus too much on the Petra in the beginning.
Thanks for nice game.

Went peaceful, except for a small war when France threw ten units at my capital. They all died, and we became friends for the rest of the game. Only thing that would have made it quicker was not losing CI by one turn.

Hi All,

So this is my first game of the month having stumbled upon the site while looking for advice on how to step up to emperor+ difficulty levels. I normally play marathon difficulty on huge maps so the change to a standard size map and game length was a shock to the system (it felt like everything was on fast forward!). I manage to win with the diplomacy VC on turn 409 which given it was my first go at this I was pretty pleased with. Having looked at other peoples posts I suspect I made some errors with my early build order, and not knowing how the VC worked in enough detail.

In terms of the game I settled my main city on the hill by the copper, and my second city by the river north of Uluru. I managed to get the first religion, but I didn't settle other cities quickly enough and ended up in an early war with France which I won comfortably, this was rapidly followed by a dual DOW by Songhai and the Arabs. The rest of the game was pretty much permanent warfare right up until the end, which was fun although different to how I normally play.

I popped education around turn 150 which judging by how others got on looks relatively late. I think for my next game I will look to change my early build order so as to get a good early game position with a minimum of 3 cities founded early doors.

Thanks for reading,

Guy.

:wavey: Welcome to CivFanatics and Game of the Month.

Glad you joined us and hope you learn a lot participating in these games. Best of luck.

Got a Turn 219 victory.

Not much to say, wanted a 190-200 turn victory so delayed PP to turn 140ish and aimed for only 1 vote. But sadly it was already looking a bit grim when the delaying of PP didn't felt forced and I couldn't get much techs before scientific theory. My science really wasn't great.
The capital was very good reaching 30 pop around turn 180 but without an observatory this really isn't the same thing !
My expansions on the other hand were lagging behind. I think I missed one or two early workers and I felt it. Went 4 cities tradition. Strangely it started fine, T105 education with 4 cities, was able to delay Oracle for secularism, I really guess I wasn't able to make them grow fast enough with my late additional workers.
I hit plastic around T200 build a couple labs, then bulb scientists + oxford to BARELY make it into atomic era 2 turns before second vote. Anyway even if my science was great I would have been too late conquest wise. I should have started earlier.

On the other hand I was in permanent golden age after turn 100 so conquering was so easy.
I really recommend siege units for persia during golden age rush, having 3 movement make them as mobile as normal crossbow, being able to both move, set, and shoot in a turn. Was cool to finally use a couple trebuchet.

I should have just gone for 2 or 3 city, build composite bows and kill 2 or 3 AI to annex their cities and develop it as much as possible.

Hi everyone, this is my first submission and I hope that somebody can learn something from my report as I did times ago from another user. Also I hope that players more skilled than me will do the same because I'm very curious to learn their strategies. I think that a very detailed report of the first 100/150 turns is the better way to let novice players to learn from veterans, and I think this should be the aim of TSG games. Also screenshots at regular steps help a lot, because players can compare their game with others.

My TSG86 has been a 2-cities\no-wars game because I'm a builder player and because this is the only winner strategy that I have learnt. This strategy fits well in small maps at quick speed; on standard maps you need 1 or 2 more cities, imo.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
A central start position helps every victory kind
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
At King level you can go straight for Great Library
- Did Persia's unique traits factor into your Diplomacy game plan? If so, how?
No, imo
- How did you adjust your strategy to account for No Espionage in a Diplomacy game?
Nothing at all. I usually don't need spies and globalization for diplo win
- Would be interested to hear any thoughts on game setup
I've learnt how important cultural and religious CS are !!! I prefer King\Emperor level games a lot. Also would be useful having (in the announcement threads) the starting screenshot with "yields icon" option turned on.

Welcome back to GotM, ambrox62! That is one thorough write-up. Thanks for playing and I hope some players will find value in such detailed write-ups.

Thanks ambrox62, this player found the thorough write-up very helpful ;-)

I tried this map as my first GOTM but i lost the Race for GL to the AI and decided not to compete in this GOTM and instead take a look at how the other players did (Seeing that Glory7 finished his GL on t70 while i lost mine on t52 was sad). I did put my cap on that desert hill too.

When i last read the board (Civ 5 vanilla times) chaining research agreements for scientific gains was extremely effective. Up to the point where i felt like it was an exploit and i started to only play the CiV Enhanced Mod from Thal to not have this option in my game. I see that you only used one RA and would like to know if massive use of RA is still required to compete with the early turn wins other players are managing.

Hopefully my syntax isn't killing anybody :-)

Finishing GL at T70 on King is kind of pure luck, this isn't even a safe timing at Prince. You usually want to get it in the 50ies. My guess however is that glory7 checked around T55 if an AI had begun it and seeing it was likely safe could grab it.

Once you want to start wonders it's a good idea to get ambassies, you can see despite the fog of war who has begun what (in their capital).

Reasearch agreement are so bad right now :/ At immortal I get something like 1 turn of research out of one. Maybe 200gold for 1 turn is alright I don't know... but that means King is even worth.

I tried this map as my first GOTM

Welcome to GotM! If you've made the jump from vanilla straight to BNW then there is quite a lot to get used to. RAs arent useless but not what they used to be. And they require a Declaration of Friendship to sign one so mass signings are more difficult. amassing Great Scientists tends to be one of the dominant methods. There are some particulars to using them effectively but these forums are great for learning what those are. Most of that can be found in General Discussion and Strategy and Tactics subforums. There are also some really great Let'sPlays on youtube from many of CFC's residents. If you have the time you can learn many new strategies that way too.

Thanks for playing!

Actually not bad if you take into account that I lost my cap to the French (how Ironic, I'm French myself :p) on turn 60ish. I finally took it back, but I was barelly having 10 pop on turn 100 :D
Turn 130 NC.
But thank's to my superior tactics  I cleaned the whole world and won on the first vote. I was crawling in gold, +400 before GA... and couldn't really use it.

I still have to learn about the either half atomic/being in info starting the wc leader vote.

What I learnt about this game is scouting SCOUTING SCOUTING!
I lost my cap because Nappy DOWed me, and I didn't see he was this close. I though he was on the bottom of Arabia. So scouting early and well is key and would have saved me for a shamefull 300+ vic :)
How funny losing my cap never happened in my deity games so far

More on the balance side, +1 side during GA is pretty powerfull, +10% quite less so. Bumping it to 30 or something would make persia a happy civ.
Also you have to take into account that in vanilla, GreatGeneral could have be burnt for GA. In BNW, we still have GA but it's still harder to get compared to GG for a warmongering civ.
Sadly, I think that Persia falls in the state of vanilla civs that got weaker as the expantions added new stuff. I would also toss the Iroquois (moves on the Iron tech tree) or the Ottomans (introduction of Privateers) in the same box.
Immortal are pretty beast but after piques, there are somehow on a dead end, until gunship but that's a long way up.

Anw, maybe it's not said quite enough, but I would like to thank the GotM staff teams and all the participants that took a bit of time of posting&explaining.
Cheers.

getting GL at t70 needs luck + scouting. I checked other civ's cap every turn to make sure that I know when they start (if they do) GL. GL always appear at the right bottom side of cap so it is fairly easy to spot.

I haven't used many RAs recently, especially for the lower difficulty levels. like 1 or 2, and they have marginal effect (like 2-3 turns of science). Top players like tommynt don't use that many RAs too.

first time submitter, i think i build to many wonders. First city was nice with all that stone/marble ended up with insane amounts of excess (aprox: 300gpt, 800 culture, 120 happyness and 170 faith ). I think i may have forgotten to focus on science somewhere along the 5. wonder so that probably slowed me down, did a fun trick with great writers, collected all of them until the world fair was enacted and spent them using policital treatise thingy, which gave about 7k culture pr GW, it could have been 8 or 9 GW-s but i needed the faith for GS-s

There was quite some warring in the game, stupid france settled their cities next to mine so i razed a few and annexed 3 of them, after that the yellow guy comes and does the same thing, so i thought i would let it go and go for the capital of that pirate guy, then the yellow guy takes out the pirates capital - which was basically mine (i was within 10 tiles atleast :P) so i had to raze a few cities, even fixed up my diplomatic reputation by liberating on of the smaller cities that belonged to the pirate (which made him come back in the game, didn't know that was possible), anyways i lost all the warmongering stuff so that was nice.

While trying to pull off the whole wipe out all but 1 civ bit to get the vote started early, I forgot to make sure the one I was saving owned one of the capitals to prevent a domination win. I realized my mistake right after I clicked that final attack move to capture the last capital.

After I saved the file to for uploading I reloaded the autosave for the turn, sold the capital with the fewest wonders to Assyria then captured the capital and last city of the other remaining player and managed to win Diplomatically 26 turns later (turn 284).

I've attached the save for the Diplo win in case anyone wants to see.
