Welcome to the TSG89 After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed and submitted your game.

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

- How did you use spying to your advantage?
- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
- What did you learn from your defeat, should you be defeated?

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay). Please refrain from posting videos until the deadline for submission is over.

Would be interested to hear any thoughts on game setup. :)

Well, finished on turn 299. I know this won't be a great finish, but with the city states so isolated, it changed the dynamic of the game...

Settled in place, ghandi beet me to the good city spot to the north, so all my cities were on the coast to the south, and all the way around to Uluru. built 5 cities. Happiness was always in question through out the entire game..

Got beat to GL, went on turn 32... changed my plans.

Show that I never did sci victory before. Was able to win diplo, my usual way more 40 turns ago, had to abstain. I did not realize 3 thinks:

1) With so many GS's coming at the end I can end tech tree mach faster then I think I could.
2) parts needed aluminium, I sold it . LoL
3) I need to move them to capital, Had to build RR to city.

AS result I finish tech tree before victory. lol

Same as the rest of you. The game is more about winning the space race in the fewest turns. I managed to get under 300 but just barely. This map felt like I was on an island all alone. I never had 1 war and the AI had no real thought of going to war with me, they were just too far away.

I sucked... t279 and I really considered not submitting it out of shame  but eh, what the heck since I did take the time to play it...
I tried something unorthodox (big ben + commerce + Freedom) because it became clear my capitol was going to be production poor.
Unfortunately I severely underestimated the amount of culture needed to complete Tradition, Rat, 6 in freedom AND commerce... only finished commerce exactly at the end of the game with 2500 faith sitting around which could've just been spent on GS and sped up my win by 20 turns or so, doh! I'm so used to CV I thought unlocking 4 trees should be no problem! (guess what, Aesthetics increases your cpt so drastically if you didn't take it it's almost impossible to get all those SP unless you are Poland when going for SV. Lesson learned.)

They picked an awful map for Korea though  turtle ship really hurts when all the CS are across the ocean. I got ToA (GL was gone t29), Oracle, Hagia, Pisa, Eiffel, SoL, Sydney, Hubbel, and Neuschweinstein, oh and Big Ben too for cheaper parts (end price is only 1830/part or so which is ridiculously cheap considering a coastal capitol makes close to 300 gpt) I believe and grew like crazy until I had severe happiness problems... oh well... then ideologies came online and I was stuck in single digit happiness until the last turn when +2 from lux kicked in

btw I moved my settler slightly here, grabbing one more salt and bananas (I think this is the best place... the southern peninsula has an insane spot with loads of pasture goods, salt, and whatnot in hindsight if I replay this map I might settle there instead (maybe take 10 turns to walk there though)
Spoiler :

t150 Seoul size 27 one turn from 28. Insane. Ran out of tiles to work pretty quickly this game.
Spoiler :

Spoiler :

Severe overkill there... appalling lack of effort from AI...

I had got Delhi at last.

Coal missed a lot. I was only able to build one spaceship part in Seoul, waiting to have cash.

Liberty because no Coal. Late for all things. I didn't explore west ocean (it's pangea !) so miss a lot of cultural and maritime CS). My culture was very low.

No wonder until Statue of Liberty. I choose to grow and Delhi conquest slowed me for everything.
I took Asceticism (Religious centre was gone) to avoid happiness issue before ideologies. My spies were in mercantile CS, also to avoid happiness.

A bad game with Korea on Immortal.

Another 7 city builder's game, but I enjoyed this one even more than GotM 88.
Spoiler :

Because I'm a little partial to Liberty and, I think, this map type plays to Liberty's strengths I opened with a free worker + Pyramids. I did steal a worker from India, but that was as much to slow Mr. India down as to net a worker. Limited happiness (for my tastes) ensured an Oracle -> Monarchy sidetrack.

t50. I'll have the collective rule settler in 4 turns to head down to the uber expo on the southern ocean. (8 hammers from stables! Never had that before.)

I had a nasty barbarian pillage a caravan that was entirely within mine and Gandhi's borders. Lost my wine too.

T100 south

T100 north

A bit of a slow opening, but all the pieces are in place for explosive growth heading forward. Fast workers will keep up with existing and new cities.

Would you build a seventh city here? I don't think I can resist. It will end up being a happy/beaker wash. Brings in a little gold, but I did give it a Trade route for 30 turns. Probably better to skip it.

Getting close to peak beakers. (I top out at 1860 in a few turns.) I balanced the Faith/Culture/GSci spawn reasonably well. I did end up with roughly 1 GSci too many, but I also didn't want to put too much pressure on saving the Porcelain Tower for so late.

I knew I would be close to t240 and tried to do as much as possible to dip under -- I ended up with 2 RR hexes in the way. So close :(

Wonders and and how I would weight their contributions, retrospectively

Pyramids - 8/10
Oracle - 7/10
Pisa - 7/10 (Basically an extra GSci late + one to spend earlier if necesary + earlier Writers/Artists)
Sistine - 3/10 (Slightly earlier policies, MAYBE one extra tenant - but I had one to spare)
Taj Mahal - 5/10
Eiffel Tower 2/10 (Why did I build this? -- for uneeded Ideological defense)
Kremlin - 6/10
Porcelain - 5/10
Hubble - 8/10
Edit: Brandenburg - 1/10 (Built for the GG to claim aluminum. I think there are easier ways).

I think I could cut a few without any problems.

Religion

None. I did found a very late pantheon (t118) taking a lovely God of the Open Sky, however. (+1 Culture from Pastures).
India only spread their religion to two cities before the end.

A couple turn events of note

T127 - Renaissance (Acoustics + Rationalism Opener. Slow, but things should speed up now ... )
T188 - Met last CS, Panama City
T194 - Won Worlds Fair
T199 - Plastics (Oxford)

1) With so many GS's coming at the end I can end tech tree mach faster then I think I could.

That's the magic of a SV. Post Plastics the tech tree just melts away

@uralis
I think we took dramatically different paths to end up right next to each other. Hah. Did you get more than the 4 early cities? I'm impressed with your cap BO: max food/hammers/growth then NC. I'll try that sometime. I put the guilds in my second city, but in the cap is probably better in this case: plenty of food (especially with your HG), and the Writers' beakers synergize with the NC.

On Korea:
Many beakers post Education, obviously, but I struggled to keep pace with hammers. I think building up the capital early, as most have done so far, would help smooth out the tech progression giving more time to build. (First game as Korea. Steam achievement popups don't show up in sceenshots, at least for me).

Ended at turn 267, my semi managing skills with what to do mid-late game comes in to play. I dont really know what do to so its effective.. Used my GE from ToA on sistine chapel, prolly shoulda saved it for leaning tower instead but I missed that one by 2 turns.

Im not adding the save because it will prolly show that ive been reloading, did that after the game was finished thou.. Im really confused that going full liberty could be so good instead of tradition..

@Olodune
I founded 5th city on aluminum only after Oxford (Nanotechnology).

opening thread: ~astronomy.

As usual, after astronomy, I filled bottom techs a bit, and beelined for sci theory. got GS and oxford ready. burn one GS and oxford radio. choose order, and get 33% discount tenet, and rush bought 3 pub schools.

With UA and overflow, I finished industrialization at the same turn. But no CS got coal.... and mine is at the 4th ring. Had to wait like 35 turns till another AI finally research industrialization. bought 4 coal and built factories right away, but already late.

Spoiler :

nothing special. Burned 2 GS to start apollo early. Used order policy GE to rush hubble, and bought one GS and one GE with faith. Thanks to the world fair and culture CS allies, I could almost fill the order tree.

clicking next turn.. and rushed last part with the faith GE.

Not too bad. Due to no coal at all in area I decided to go Freedom instead. While I think it's a good choice peaking at over 1700bpt on 5 cities, I should have instantly made 2 or 3 additional cities with cargos to each when I picked it. I was swimming in happiness and I felt a bit slow on science. Freedom + Korea UA work a lot better with many more cities I think. I made only a 5th around T150 and it became quickly more than 10% of bpt output. Got a permanent stage of golden age after world fair too, reaching 47 turns of golden age cumulated at some point.

My early game was great getting all the wonders I wanted. Late game also went great swimming in gold and rushing parts. For once I also could finish as soon as I reached last tech instead of waiting for parts to be built. Main issue was my weak mid game with low gold and not enough workers I think. I couldn't rush as many building as I usually want and some cities were under improved, this really slowed me down (especially when I see glory7 being able to rushbuy 2 school while I was hard building them for 10turns). I also don't know why I forgot to build a garden in bottom city may have given that extra GS I felt I was missing. Or I should have waited 12turns for natural GS before finishing hubble. I also made a terrible job with CS, finding them very late.

I bought 2 of the ship parts and 2 faith GS and 1 faith GE for big ben.

Edit: better screenshot

Spoiler :

Will probably replay taking care of noted issues I had.

I see I am very slow comparing others - but in fact it is the best I can do. I always have problems to make big cities. All was easy and peaceful - only slow. I foundate three cities and the last fourth on ALU, went Freedom and rush spaceship parts.

@glory7

Nice. I knew, based on your opener, that you'd launch faster then me, so thanks for "only" finishing at t222. For you, I think sub t215 is achievable without the "bad luck" events. Did you really only build 5 workers? Wouldn't at least a 6th have been useful?

@Acken

I'm convinced that a 5th (and maybe 6th) city is an asset for an SV. It's tricky to get them to work out, however. I did get natural GScis out of 5 cities. For Korea the benefit of additional cities might be less than other Civs since the relative difference between a Scientist and Engineer/Merchant specialist is smaller than usual.

I settled in place. Went into Tradition and put a 2nd city near India to the north west. Stole a worker from him. Beelined Maths for HG then NC around the turn 80(which is late for 2 cities). Then added 4 more cities around the coast. A damned barb camp stopped me to settle close from Uluru.

(Edit: missed CI by 2 turns)Got astro on turn 123 but made some time to ally extra cs. Made some very stupid mistakes. 1 of them is during a world congress vote. Instead of saying ''nay'' to Art funding i said ''yea'' for the world fair. And when i worked on the World Fair i missed by 100 hammers to Arabia the first place! Haha so much hammers used for nothing!

And when both aluminium and coal were revealed i had to put a 7th city slowing things even more. Got these factories combined with worker faculties(Order) pretty fast though. Had to build the Kremlin to reach enough policies needed. Anyways that was a pretty average game for me i should have done a 3 city start(forget HG) and put 2 more only. That would have me dropped under 230 i think.

I don't usually build too much cities if i have a slow NC start. All these observatories were cool to get. But i was 1 gs short overall(damn Art Funding). Got problems with growth got dipped into unhappiness at several occasions and had to buy extra luxs to stay happy like some of you. (Edit)Rush bought Used 2 ge to rush 2 parts.

Can't see well here but there is 3 more cities to the south.
Spoiler :

Hey guys! First attempt at playing one of these maps. About the 4th civ V game I've played as well. I had a lot of fun. I went very slow to try to do well.

BO: scout, worker, granary, ToA, library, (buy settler), NC, (buy library in 2nd city), settler, settler (bought), worker, worker, worker, Haga Sophia

Ruins:
~T2: warrior->spearman
~T5: culture
~T10: pop
~T15: Calendar
~T21: 20 faith (took salt pantheon)
~T50: 100 gold

Social Policies: Tradition -> Legalism -> Landed Elite -> Monarchy -> Aristocracy -> Oligarchy -> Rationalism tree -> Order

I did some good and some bad things I think. Started the game and went up 3 squares to settle by the river. Really not sure if that was a good decision. I decided not to go for GL because of this, the delay of 3 turns made it too risky even with chopping. It went turn 36, don't think I could have gotten it.

I got free pantheon from faith ruin ~T21 which was nice. Got an early religion. Built hagia sophia for enhancer. Religion really didn't seem to do very much for me this game, I don't think building Sophia was a good idea, I wish I could have gone the other one that gives 3 missionaries, but it was taken early.

Got ToA early ~40's. Got NC then my cities growing. 2nd city up above the mountain by India, then 2 to the south. The one to the south closest to capital I put by the mountain for observatory but it might have been better to put by coast for extra cargo ships? Not sure. Cities seemed to come out quite late, not too sure about that either....

Mid game seemed to stagnate. Not much gold to do stuff after buying a lot of early stuff. I had less than 20 culture production forever which was bad, I didn't really understand guild's until this game, so I think I got those way too late. I think I needed them midgame to help me get through rationalism quicker, because it took forever. I eventually allied 3x culture CS and then got the free SP and +100% culture for 20 turns and hit 300+ culture/turn and caught up though...I completely wasted the 1st proposal to congress as well which was bad. Not sure what I'm supposed to do, but I think I did the one that gives +20% science for techs already researched, but I was ahead of everybody by then. Btw it took me forever to realize that the way to scout accross oceans was to use actual land units in embarked mode...I built tireme's and galleon's but couldn't find a way to find the CS's, lol!

turn 200+ I got back in to it with lots of great scientists after doing research labs. The end is where I did a lot of mess ups though. First off I had 2500 faith I could have bought 2 more GS's with, so that was bad...I also forgot to build hubble so that's another 2 GS's I missed. I also messed up rationalism free tech, I meant to use it on nanotechnology, but I messed up the timing, used a great scientist, and because I had so many beakers piled up it wouldn't even let me use the free tech on a cheaper one that was on the space parts tech path.

Finished 256. I figure with proper use of the 4 extra GS and the free tech (although if I finished earlier I probably would have gotten 1 less GS produced) I could have finished around T230...But I learned a lot this game so I will try to do better next SV GOTM!

Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :wavey:

Congrats on your win. Glad you enjoyed it and best wishes for future fortune. :)

I replayed the map and was able to get a T220 victory using something I had never tried before.

Spoiler :

Spoiler :

I usually go order so like many order players after plastics I usually rush the Appolo program so that I can start on the parts early. But after a test, I felt a good freedom strategy would be instead to aim for the food techs and additional routes first. So I went railroad and Penicilin first and grabbed Rocketery very late, T205 or so. I ended finishing appolo around T215 and Hubble also around T215.
That way my cities were able to stay on food focus almost the whole game and the lack of factory wasn't even felt. This made me go up to 1500bpt (same as glory7 using order) which is pretty strong on 4 cities with no factory bonus, also gold being also a function of food it made my gpt rise continuously.

After getting the specialists techs from freedom (3 in it) I opened Commerce and grabbed Mercantilism with the world fair techs. I then proceeded to grab the policies from freedom up to tier 3 to buy ship parts. I used one GE to rush Statue of Liberty and built Big Ben, the other way around is also good.

With only 6 available food cargos routes, the remaining 3 were used to get gold. I also made sure I had markets, banks and stock exchange as soon as possible. That way I was getting over 300 GPT per turn. After turn 200 I also made loans with all my friends to get their gold in exchange of my gpt which means I was making around 600 a turn after turn 200 or so. On the screenshot don't pay attention at the cities buying wealth, I only did that for the last 2 turns.

Once Appolo was built, I simply bought all parts for 1830 gold which is gold I was doing in 3 turns and was hoarding since T200ish.

My guess is that I could probably even cut a few more turns by adding a 5th city or even 6th if I can grab Pagoda, using Korea UA and freedom more in a wider empire.
