looking for a new turn based game to play. havent paid much attention to anything besides civ over the past few years, so im in the dark on where to turn for a fun, challenging game. any recommendations from the past several years, or games to look out for in the near future would be greatly appreciated.

thanks all

Empires of Steel might be interesting. It was released last week and it has the interesting premise that every player gives orders to their units and when everybody's done, all orders by everyone get executed at the same time. On the other hand, compared to Civ it feels a bit 'lite' and at $45 it is also completely overpriced.

An old game, that I really like, is Lords of the Realm.

I also liked Lords of Magic.
Age of Wonders II

I forgot to add Risk :)

For these games, check out GOG.com:
Lords of the Realm 1+2 and expansions: $5,99
Lords of the Realm 3: $5,99
Lords of Magic: $5,99

You might also like the Paradox Interactive games (Europa Universalis, EU Rome, Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Crusader Kings). Not turn-based, but slow enough to feel like TBS.

create. build. train. cavalry. train cavalry.... feels like some Paradox game interfaces.

I'm currently playing XCOM for the first time ever and it is good.

Dominions 3 is really fun, but unfortunately the computer opponents are mere stumbling blocks, not true contenders, and the gameplay is quite imbalanced. So quite like Civ in some ways, which i enjoy less than Dominions 3.

I might start a let's play XCOM thread where we can all chip in.

Problem is that alt-tabbing crashes the game ;)
