I have played with a friend of mine,m we always played to the previous civilizations (ever since Civnet)... I would like to have a multi player mode that is turn based! Isn't it the basic concept of this game? We played one game on the internet, and one thing a did not like is that once we declared war to one another, it was a ***clickfest*** to know which archer (crossbowman whatever), would fire the first one on the other before the other player can react to it. I would HIGHLY appreciate having the option of choosing whether it is turn base or simultaneous moves.

How about simultaneous turn mode normally, then when two human players are at war with each other, they go into turn-based mode? Basically just one having to finish moving before the other can go. The other participants can move as if it was normal simultaneous turn.

I like simultaneous turn for the extreme amount of time it saves, but I share your frustration whenever there is PvP warfare. The mechanics for war are clearly designed for turn based action so it does not work well.

The beauty of turn based (PBEM) is that you can go about your real life, while enjoying the game - like all the other CIVs.

You can go at your own pace.

The non-PBEM games are for young people who only have to go to school and have much more free time.

So while your ideas are good, for me and I think many other PBEMers, we are sad that PBEM (Turn based) is not available.

The AI is still very cool, but without PBEM, I think the fan base will be SIGNIFICANTLY less.

I have not played multiplayer, however i assumed it was turn based... since the game is...turned based lol. Sounds odd to hear that it isn't.

how long to finish a game?

lets say it's 200 turns.... 5 players... maybe 2 guys manage to finish a turn in a day...

500 days to finish a game?

I don't see the point in playing any game PBEM. It takes to long. I have tried this method in other games and I just don't like it.
Now I'm not saying it should not be an option, it should be because people play with this method. However when I play a game I like to set aside time to do it not do one turn then wait an hour or so before I do my next turn etc. Just like when I play chess I like to play in one setting not do two or three moves then wait a coule of days and do two or three more moves.
TBS would be a much better option than PBEM would be but they should have all tree methods.

Pitboss is a good alternative, much more flexible, usualy you can play 1-2 turns/day, an epic speed game around one year. For pitboss however you need a server to run the game continously.

Turn based mode would be really good. For online play against random people it doesn't work so well, but playing with friends turn based mode is plausable.

played my first mp game this weekend with a mate.
everything was going fine and we were both quite enjoying the game.
started off on different continents at the other side of the world to each other.
took out ai players (2 each and finally ended up meeting).
then it became a clickfest as we went to war with each other.
As his laptop is older and slower than mine I had a massive advantage over him (his takes longer to process civ 5 than mine).
made for a really bad ending to the game and after a few turns we both went frack it why bother?
Guess it's back to civ4 for mp until this ridiculous system is fixed, like if I wanted to play rts (which pvp combat kind of is) i'd play starcraft2 or DoW.

While casual friends and family may have the time to play turn based MP games. The reality is that most online random lobby games have to be simu turns in order to finish a game in a 2-4 hour time frame.

This has actually been the way Civ MP has been coded and played going way back to Civ2MGE, and though yes it does have it's unique charcateristics, once players adjust to them it has always been a level playing field.

People just don't often have 20hours in a row to play a game, and saving and continuing with random people you meet online just is not practical.

Yes I agree Pitboss is much superior to PBEM, no reload cheating, no waiting for emails, the turn timer moves on even if a player occassionaly misses his turn.....

This is true. At the same time, it surely can't be hard to put a turn based mode into MP for those that want it.

There's actually a not too hard solution for friends playing together. Just have a player who goes "first" and one who goes "second"... and don't overlap your unit movement. It's by no means ideal, but it kinda works.

I agree, the turn based code is already their, it should not be hard to build a check box in the MP Advanced options area.

what they need is team simultaneous. 2 phases. team 1 moves. and then team 2 moves.

2 teams always war was fairly common. some noob waiting til the last 10 seconds of a 3 minute timer to make all his moves is also fairly common

it would actually speed up the game because players might need 30 seconds to a minute to move and there wouldn't be an advantage to stalling

Sorry but I don't see the point in playing PBEM for any game. Might as well be doing somrthing else. And non-pbem mode is not just for the young as you so put it. If I'm going to play a game then I'm going to set down time to do it, after all the reason to play a game is to relax and have fun. PBEM is not what I would call fun. Too slow paced.
However saying that I agree with you that it should be in the game along with Hotseat. The more options the better.
