How to Install RoM A New Dawn, on Linux, Ubuntu 10.4.1 LTS Edition. (and others)

Download the Windows Self Exe file, don't try to Extract, it'll just give an error message. Click on the file, of course your using WINE emulation software, and install the file. It installs CORRECTLY to the Mods folder (I know, I was amazed as well)

Thanks to Emperor Fool (Thank you again) and Zappara, and ME!!!!! you need to alter the CvAltRoot.py file included with the Mod.

This file is located in the Rise of Mankind, A New Dawn Mod folder you've just extracted. Open this file with a text Editor.

Step 1.

As I've Emulated Windows XP: Change the line to read (Forward slashes and all);

Window XP: “C:/home/(user name)/My Games/Beyond the Sword”

Step 2, Save file, close, Right click upon same said file, copy.

Now you need to go to the Assets\Python folder of the Mod directory your currently in, paste into the Python folder the copy of the file, overwrite the existing copy.

Now you can play rise of Mankind, A New Dawn.

Other mods.

Hmm just use the CvAltRoot.py file, follow the same procedures I guess.

Notes:, this works for Windows XP Emulation, others don't Know, similar directory structure.

Q. I want to use an Earlier/Later Version, or another Version of Linux.
A. Just use wine, same procedures, I use 10.04.1 LTS Edition is all. (Currently)

Q. Hey, I've got a Mac, “What about me, it isn't fair, I've had enough, I want my share”....
A. “Can't you see, its in the file, just change the lines to follow the correct path”

Q. Hey, I've got Linux, not windows, what's this C:/, or Ha Ha, Its \ and NOT /
A. Its EMULATING (Pretending) Windows XP DIRECTORY, under a Linux structure, hence C:/home/(user name)/My Games/Beyond the Sword

Q. What happened to \home\.....\ you say one thing, then type C:/.
A. Its the way the games designed, or wine handles it. I don't know, I'm not a programmer.

Q. How do I play/ Start the game.
A. It should have installed an icon on the desktop, Civ 4/Bts Installations, if not, find the executable file, copy it to desk top, right click, make it executable, and locate icon the same way. Just edit the Civ4.ini file in \(User name)\My Games\Beyond the Sword, to load the Mod, Mod = Rise of Mankind A new Dawn

Q. Hey, the mods don't work, are faulty, Buggy, etc
A. Place your grievance with the various Mod forums.

Q. I haven't got (user name), where and what is it.
A. Its your Desktop name, usually your name.

Q. Do I have to go from Root every time.
A. No, I'm just showing the full Directory structure, start with home or (User name)

Q. I want to use the command line, how do I do that.
A. My heads spinning already, I can't help you there.

Q. Aren't I just adding another layer to the game, won't it just suck more resources, etc.
A. I've found, my own personal data, that it plays better, uses less resources. Linux does it better.

Q. How do you know this works?
A. I've tested this, over 5 day's, various other changes, combinations, satanic chants, and Voodoo. This loads 100%, is faster, and plays great. (Rise of Mankind Mod,)

Note: I'm currently having random sound crashes, this I attribute to a failing in wine, sound has regressed since Version 1.2. Wine.

Q. Hey, Mod x....?
A. Mod x forums, not me.

Q. Hey, what a lot of work install this, down load that, windows is so much simpler.
A. How many service packs did you install, drivers, virus checkers, ram upgrades, video upgrades.?

Q. Mine works without the changes you've suggested, what gives.
A. Lucky you, mine worked as well, without the changes 1 out of 14 times, 1st time not a problem, it would load fully couple in a row, then crash anther 14 times. (Rise of Mankind mod)

Q. How do I know I can trust you.
A. How do I know I can trust YOU!!!!

Well this is embarrassing, I have a slight amendment to my earlier posting on the CivAltRoot.py path way's.

1st step- Windows XP emulation is assumed, alter for other operating software accordingly.

Windows XP pathway: “C:/users/(user name)/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword”.

2nd Step- Alter the Rootdir text at the base of this file, the PINK TEXT to read, (just over write)

Rootdir = “C:/users/(user name)/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword”

Really its the same pathway to the Civilization4.ini file, its just the way Windows handles it.

Under Ubuntu, there are 2 pathway's to this file, this will eliminate the error message that Bug (Version you have) can't find the Civilization4.ini file.

It still works without this, but best to fix totally. Never know what else may go wrong.

Q. How do I know this actually works, you've gotten it wrong before, so it seems.
A. Till YOU stop :sniper: from the balcony, and come on the stage to preform, you'll be forever dancing to my Tune, my little puppet.

If you care to Look into Ubuntu's directories, You'll find this under Drive_C for C:/ Full directory is
/(root)/home/(user name)/.wine/users/(user name)/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword.

Spoiler :
FullPathtoCiv4ini.png

Just abbreviate down to C:/ as its Emulating Windows directories.

Heh, nice job. I Remember back with RoM 2.61, I got it to load up with Ubuntu 8 & Wine, but it was a struggle. The 2 bugs with Unix systems & Civ4 is that the spinning globe cursor does not spin, and the food/production bars on cities displays the correct number of turns, but will never fill in with green/blue.

1st, the food production bars, its a Video card related problem. You need to update your driver to the latest version from your provider.

I.E. NVidea, latest Linux driver
Radeon, latest Linux driver

I just currently use the Linux certified version for my :old: VIDEO card. 128 Meg of Video memory, and it WORKS!!!!!!! yeah me!! (but 4 Meg of Ram certainly helps out)

Blue spinning earth globe?? I've NEVER, EVER. had a problem, even back in the day's of 8.04. Not once have I never not had cursor support.

Globe spins, Gold Cursor, etc?? Food and growth being Textual, I don't even notice anymore, I actually prefer it. Though in the City screen itself, they DO WORK??? SO go figure that out??? Only in World view they don't.

UBUNTU 10.04.2 LTS Edition. Say's it all. Might try it on 11.04 once that comes out of Beta, just to see.

P.S. Love the game. Only problem is with Inquisitors. What Civics should I be running, its more than 1, and not documented, what works and what doesn't.

In what ways would the install be different in LINUX as opposed to Ubuntu? If you don't think it would be different, please request a mod to change the thread name. I don't use Ubuntu, but I still use Linux and having a properly named thread helps googling a lot.

Linux is not an operating system.

Linux is not an operating system.

Please Afforess, spare me political talk. Linux is, indeed, dependant of the GNU toolkit unless you're talking about Android. However, despite all of Richard Stallman's insistence, Linux is the name of the operating system based on the Linux kernel. Don't believe me? Let's see.

mplayer is a movie player for Linux
If I had the patience, I could go on forever here, but do you get my point? Considering all the relevant players, only Debian names itself GNU/Linux. If you wanted to equal distribution to operating system, please enlighten me how can two different distributions with the same versions of binutils, gcc, bash, xorg, the kernel itself, etc. be considered different operating systems? That's either stupidity or political agenda.

And that was precisely my point. Except for some minor details, e.g. the way you install wine because of your package manager, the procedure to install your mod in Fedora, Ubuntu, Slackware, Arch, Gentoo or Suse will be exactly the same. Naming the thread with Ubuntu's name was probably just IPEX's distraction, but it makes it harder to find when you're searching for ways to install it on LINUX.

Or prove me wrong.

Linux is a kernel. Ubuntu is an operating system. It's appropriate to name this thread for Ubuntu, because Wine may or may not operate the same with other distributions of Linux. You're free to disagree, but you're still wrong. ;)

Our concepts of proof are very different. I presented arguments and examples, you repeated what you had just said and raised a possibility just to conclude that I'm wrong.

You must have read GNU's page about Linux and formed your opinion there. It just comes to give strength to what I said before:

I'm really unsure what to call your arguments.

Hey, is there really any relevance?

This is after all RAND forum, so the instructions for installing RAND on this stuff should be clear. That's it. No need for anything else.
Afforess just differ in name and labeling for the lesser known operating system, that's it.

No need to stress out about it and derail the forum, OK?
(And I use Windows 7, so this is seemingly irrelevant derailing of RAND's forum ;), at least to me.)
