ugly maps (re-starting quite a lot)

I like the Civ3 maps. I like the fact that there are real continents, that are so far a part, you cannot even find some civs until you are in the late middle ages. (just like in the real world).

I have exactly the same feeling. Truly ugly starting places with ten to twenty tiles deep of forest, desert, mountains! YUCK!

I found an easy way to make it more pleasing to me. Just select the age of the world to be 5 Billion - it smooths things out a lot.

The civ2 map generator was appalling...it didn't cause too many problems as it was a very simplistic map system...

With colonisation the random map editor was useless because it never gave much homogenetity to types of terrain and it put indian tribes everywhere.

With civ3 the editor has a hell of a time what with the number of terrains, strategic resources and luxuries etc (and the relation between them and civilisations)...so far it appears to do a great job. Though there will be some very, very have situations where your lands a bereft of strategic resources -just like Japan really.

To be honest with ya. I made my own map. Its all conteneints. No land masses connect and no more than one culture per conteneint. Now that may sound cheesy at first, but its not because you or the AI if you choose when ya get a boat and go wherever you want because all the water is shallow. I have been experimenting with many differnt things temps, and land locales, ect. This is one of my experimenttation maps, but let me tell you, when war breaks out its on!! Big time.

Hmmm. Okay, I must repent. Earlier I thought the generator was really good (and next to Civ2 IT IS!)

But, I've been starting over alot lately too. Maybe I'm just spoiled and now I expect the world's most perfect map instead of being pleasantly surprised in Civ2 when the world didn't completely suck.
But my complaint is mostly just the shape of the continents, not the arrangement of mountain ranges or desert, etc.

Oh, and I remember Colonization. THOSE maps REALLY stunk.
