So I loaded up a fresh game today to goof around a little, and stumbled across this rather unpleasant map. By no means this map has been altered or cooked in any way, form, or shape. It is genuinely generated by the map generator, and I was baffled as to the stupidity of this map very quickly!

My last ultimate evil map was a seriously cooked map that had the player be sandwiched and boxed in by 3 warmongers on one continent, while the other continent was occupied by 3 rather peaceful techers. Player's land wasn't very good either with little room to expand to good tiles while having a massive ice and tundra peninsula that spawned barbarians like crazy. We had many participants, many of whom probably do not log into the forums as much anymore, but there was rather one detailed finish done by Drewisfat, who managed to beat the game Nuka Domination Style. ^_^

This time, it is a different kind of challenge. Within 3 to 5 turns, you will find out just how weird this map was generated. I myself, am interested in seeing just how expert players handle this kind of map, because quite frankly, I am a little lost.

So without further adieu, let me introduce our beloved leader, Humble Pericles!

And the start looks quite promising.

Special request for Fippy: You MUST play this! ^_^

Deity and immortal saves included. Barbarian techs added appropriately so no need to go into the world builder to add techs to the barbarians.

Disclaimer: Since I had no part in the actual creation or alteration of this map, any complaints about this map should not be directed to me, but to the talented people at Firaxis! ^_^

Final Note: BAT 4.1 is required, as I saved the game with the mod running. Otherwise, you will NOT be able to open the save.

No work today, playing as promised ~~

Spoiler :
Oh what an evil map indeed lol, has been some time when i was last forced teching Archery.
Had no choice here, saw 2 barb Archers early..Scout cannot go thru jungle, warriors not trustworthy enuf.
After finding no bronze (teched mining - BW first) i picked Archery.
Not bad starting techs for a change with Greece here :)

Sailing, Masonry, AH and now Writing (open borders, cheap library + PHI = yay.

Lucky GLH, no doubt..turn 62 is rather late on deity.
Stopped here for now, some pics + save

Fippy,

Spoiler :

The stupid jungle really impedes growth and expansion here, not to mention that the starting position is also really awkward. Interested in seeing how you solve this problem.

By the way.... don't look at this spoiler until you've played a bit further.

Spoiler :

The worst possible scenario... being semi isolated. This means Wang won't trade any techs, so we will be forced to self tech Iron Working? Wang seems to have a huge plot of uncontested land all to himself, while we are struggling to just get out of the jungle!

Anysense,

Spoiler :
That's some interesting settling choice for that city in the screen shot. Any reason behind that? I really hate settling into jungle and try to avoid it as much as possible.

Played to 350 BC:

Spoiler :
No horses. No copper. Had to tech Archery, and then realized that we are semi-isolated with Wang, which means no tech trades either. I see elephants in the far distance in the thickness of the jungle, which is immense. Hard realization that I am gonna need a LOT of workers and to self tech Iron Working.

I also built the Great Lighthouse, but unfortunately, I don't see any nearby islands I can try to settle for overseas trade. Oh well, will try to settle the coast as much as possible.

I figure that blocking off Wang and grabbing the middle land area would be wiser than to try to expand northward into the jungle, so I started expanding west across the ocean using a single galley, transporting troops, warriors, and such.

Wang founded a religion and it spread to me, so I switched into it. Thank god at least he isn't an aggressive warmonger. Hopefully there won't be any tension with him. I've just got to remember to switch out of the religion before starting to make contact with the other continent(s).

Happiness is a huge problem. Pyramids got built in the 600's BCs, and I didn't even have a chance to put a fail gold attempt into it. It seems like Monarchy is an absolute must.

My first great person happened to be a Great Merchant, and not even thinking much, I just bulbed Metal Casting. Gonna need it anyway, since I am gonna have to get Machinery, Compass, and Optics. Would need to make contact with other continents as soon as possible, and hopefully, with the philo trait, double bulb Astro.....

Just way too much jungle!

lymond... where did your post go...? :(

ha ha...I was kinda tired and wasn't satisfied with my post. high standards :king:

@Anysense
Spoiler :
You are spawn busting correctly, but barb cities can spawn on any non-visible tile.

Weird. I haven't seen that before.
My fourth attempt is a bit more succesful.
Spoiler :
This time I emphasized spawnbust a bit more but barbs build one city in the north. Also I saw 4 galleys there:rolleyes:. At least I managed to settle that island in 1040 BC, mainly for intercontinental traderouts. Encountered another civ. So far it's been not a very useful contact. Only traded currency for calendar and mysticism. I hope that WK will choose right route for his boat and meet Joao. The latter is not isolated, he has not put a single espionage point against me. I probably could get WK at friendly but focusing on getting to optics ASAP to meet other civs seems more sensible. Besides WK is harmless at pleased.
Overall it does not look too bad. Of course 153 bpt isn't great but most of my cities are just level 1 or 2. Quite soon bpt will be about 250.

Got a little update for turn 74
Spoiler :
barbs seem under control, of course their galleys will become annoying soon with more sea tiles east.
Will probably need double galleys to get an unit on new land behind the peaks.

Creative is really nice here, fish + wet rice spot makes jungle around it somewhat unimportant :)

Wang sending his Reli should get pleased, also important and worth 1 turn anarchy.

Homeland, Athens gets library with settler overflow. Have to decide where i settle, maybe cow + jumbos + lakes.
Corinth cos it was close and all cities are good with GLH, has 1 clams from Athens area and whipped workboat for Thebes.

Almost thinking about doing MC for sea control, i guess this will be GLH city spam with Wang in same Reli being a good partner.

I lazily played on until 1530 AD.

Spoiler :

Note: I have never built this many workers. I have 17 cities and I think I have like 30 workers. I took it as a challenge to completely rework the landscape filled with nasty jungle. And way too much micro. Not my type of game really, but I thought it would be kinda satisfying at the end of it all.

I ran into Portugal by cultural border when my 2 cities on the northeastern island expanded their borders, and realized that I was behind in techs. I beelined to Astronomy with some Great Scientist bulbs, and made contact with all the other continent by 1080 AD. Tech situation back then was pretty dismal to say the least:

So anyway, from the start, I decided to just spam cottages everywhere except in a few special places where I thought farms were necessary to support population growth. I ended up winning Liberalism rather late, but took Communism as a free tech, got the free Great Spy. Soon after, I finished researching Democracy, and switched into Universal Suffrage, State Property and Free Religion.

Built the Kremlin and the Iron Works in my city with the most base hammers. Meanwhile, my capital did double duties as my Academy/Oxford/National Epic/GP Farm.

One annoying barb city popped earlier by the lone elephants to the north, and I managed to snatch it before Wang got his stack of troops there. That ivory plus all the calendar resources made it much easier to control the happiness problems. Made it easier to trade resources with AIs also.

So other than the aforementioned, I did not build any other wonders at all. Too busy building settlers and workers! :) Well... other than the Great Lighthouse at the very beginning...

Anyway, by 1530 AD...

Hannibal and Monty are the 2 major players on the other continent, but they are both in their own religion, and have been fighting each other. The others are all in Buddhism. Bribed Monty and JC into starting some trouble, and made the whole continent busy fighting each other. :) Stupid Joao declaring war on Wang triggered the whole scenario. Gotta love it!

Maybe I can aim for tanks in the 1600s? Not sure why I went Railroads.... I guess I was bored and just wanted to see my horde of automated workers get back to work! ^_^

I wanted to play a game with the modern warfare or .... just go to space, since I haven't done that in so long. Cuirassier/Cavalry and Rifles/Cannon warfare have been done to death, so I am aiming for a different kind of experience this time.

Nice job, Anysense on winning the Lib! ^_^

Fippy! I'd love to see you finish this to the end. Now tell me..... how high does this map rank among all the maps I have made thus far? ^_^

I would say it's heavy on planning, dangerous for barbs and luck dependant on deity for GLH ;)
If GLH can be secured & Archery teched, it's not the most difficult one.

There are plenty nice coastal city spots, and jungle does not matter that much for them (on deity you will just let have Wang his land i think, it's what i plan doing) + Pericles = awesome leader when starting techs fit and they do here :)
