Playing the Middle Ages Conquest...

I'm Denmark, but I'm researching the other tech trees to maximize benefits. So I got assassination, and here I am, all excited. I was at war with England, and they only have one king unit left (mass regicide), so I sneak some assassins up to their capital, attack, and...

the king units aren't available for stealth attack...

Is this just the way it is? I suppose it might make the game too easy, but it seems counterintuitive. Assassins do, after all, mostly kill leaders (kings). I thought that was the point. Why can't kings be attacked? And, in light of this, what is the best way to use assassins? It seems like they would mostly be of use defensively, attacking enemy stacks that come into your territory. How do you use them?

Well it would be too easy if you could just walk up and instantly kill their king. Its a game balance thing. People would complain if assasins were too overpowered.

I use them for getting the AI to declare on me by putting them in the path of enemy units so they get attacked via the submarine bug (AI can't see stealth units, hence attempt to walk over them, hence attack them and are forced to declare war) so I don't get a rep hit for declaring.

Why bother with Assassins when you can build Beserks right from the start as Denmark? England can't even build any attack ships so they are powerless to resist your amphibious assault. As any Viking civ, you want to strike quickly with what you have. Time is not on your side. Eventually the Christian and Muslim nations are able to build better units and superior infrastructure but at the start of the scenario the Vikings rule!
