I've never really used Mobilization before and I don't know much about it. I've lately been hearing about how powerful it is and I'm thinking about starting to use it regularly. I'm wondering if someone could post all of the effects of Mobilization or at least point me to an article about it. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but I found that article rather confusing (maybe I'm tired)... I might try reading it again tommorow...

Also, during a war-time economy, each cultural improvement in each of your cities will generate only half of the cultural value it would normally produce.

I just read the piece by Catt, but wonder what the implications of this quote are?

If you want a culture victory then don't mobilize!

BTW, the production bonus does NOT apply to wonders, or any non-military unit/improvement.

I generally avoid mobilize because I want to rush temples in the towns I capture, and some towns can't make units fast enough even with the bonus.

I should have implemented in my last game (where I lost suntzu by 8 turns :( )!! I knew I read it long time ago, somehow I forgot about it.

Since you can't mobilize until you reach nationalism I don't think it would have helped with Sun Tzu ;).

The article Padma linked to is excellent. Here's a brief summary of the main points of mobilization:

1) You can mobilize at any point after researching nationalism, but you can't demobilize until you have signed at least one peace treaty.

2) When you mobilize, every tile that already produces at least 1 shield produces another, so long as you are producing military* (explanation below). So it is a bit like having a Golden Age, except that it is only for shields, not gold.

3) The extra shields only apply to "military" production. The definition Civ 3 implements of military production is a bit wierd. Most units count. Military buildings (eg barracks) count (I think). Strangely, artillery does NOT count, nor do aircraft, yet nukes DO count.

4) While in mobilization you cannot build any "peaceful" buildings. This means anything except barracks, walls, harbours, airports and wonders. For wonders you do NOT get the extra shields (I think). You can build all units, but you will only get the shield boost for military units, eg, you can build settlers but you won't get the extra shields from mobilization for settlers.

5) EDIT: forgot to add the half-culture! When mobilized, culture buildings only produce half normal culture, eg a temple usually produces 2cpt, in mobilization it will only produce 1cpt. So if you're playing a game where fast culture is part of your plan, try to avoid mobilization.

So if you make a peace treaty does the game demobilize automatically or do you have to select it from the menu? That's confusing me.

It demobilize automatically, or at least it did so last time I mobilized.

EVERY time you make peace it reverts - kind of annoying when you're at war with half the world, but it is an opportunity to switch build orders.

You don't get to build all of the wonders...at least I didn't get to build the Theory of Evolution last night during mobilization. I didn't have the option to build Sufferage, so I am not sure about that one. It did let me build the military academy.
