Hey all...
I've been having the same problem with every game: people are unhappy because it's too crowded. First I thought this was because the population was at the city limit, so I sent some off as workers and settlers. But the problem also occurs with cities of 5 for instance.
This the only reason people become unhappy in my games, even with temples and cathedrals, and it's driving me nuts! Does anyone have a clue?

They are always unhappy because it's too crowded, you have to go into "city view" and move them out to the country where they will be happier..
All kidding aside, don't even worry about it if it's not causing your cities to riot or you have to use too many comedians. That's when wonders like sistines chapel come in handy.

But eventually they always riot, and then when I go see what the problem is, it's always the crowding... But sending them away as settlers/workers is a good idea right?

Thats just your country moaning because they have nothing else to moan about, ways to stop it are

-wonders as said
-temples, cathedrals, colloseums (probably spelt wrong)
-increase the amount of luxuriews your civ has
-build a marketplace to heighten the use of said luxuries
-increase the luxury output on the general advisor screen
-make citizens entertainers on the city view screen
- in some governments including military units in the city can cause some citizens to be content/happy.

hope this helps

yer sending them away as settlers and workers can be a good idea, but in the long run if you keep doing that it decreases both production and commerce output.
