Unit Images Do Not Appear

I've gotten back into Civ IV again, or at least am trying to. Whenever I enter a game in Beyond the Sword, my scout and settler units are not there, or at least the images are not. I can still make a city and move my units and everything works, but I cannot see where my units are. I've managed to update up to version 3.17.

This affects only BTS not Warlords or the original Civ IV. Help please.

start a game. in the right lower corner above the minimap there is a row of buttons - one of them (IIRC the third from the left) toggles the bare map mode on and off - that will solve the problem
