Unit Request: Dalek

HA! I'm half tempted now, I've been thinking up some designs for some gaurd robots for my mars mod, and perhaps the daleks would make an interesting British UU...

OF course, everyone is missing the point about doctor who;
Its a show for nerds, it's terrible, which makes it funny, and it's even more funny because only us nerds realise. Everyone else just looks at the cheap special effects and bizzare comic story lines, and just says "thats really crap" or similar, and the nerds laugh, "HAHA, it's supposed to be crap! thats what makes it so enjoyable".

I love watching old Doctor who shows on UKGOLD, it captures some of that old B-movie cliche magic...

@ Smoking Mirror ... its cult status occured because it was one of the first dedicated scifi tv series ... the watcher ws willing to overlook the effects (which were quite innovative at the time circa 60's) and were due to the low budget of the BBC, the story lines evolved over time and all the actors had a chance to stamp their own personality to the character. I'm sure this occured with the 'monster' aliens as well ... But primarily the cult status was attained (IMHO at least) due to the wierd theremin electronic wailing and freaky psychedelics of the opening titles ...

So please please create this evil schloc pepper pot unit ...

I saw last week's episode yesterday, which featured a Dalek (the last one, supposedly, although I'm sure they will be able to bring them back if they feel the need). The funny thing is that the new series is meant to be understandable to anyone who never saw it before, so in this episode no-one (except the Doctor) knew what a Dalek was, and they were all rather dismissive of it, saying it just looked like a pepperpot, couldn't climb stairs, and so on. As it advanced on one guard waving its arm, he contemptuously said, "What are you going to do, plunger me to death?" - at which it did precisely that in a most pleasingly nasty way. It managed to kill an awful lot of people all by itself - although, unlike the "underwater" picture that Drift found, Thomas Mesereau was not among them.

I watch Dr. Who almost every week (it is on Saturdays at 11:30pm on a PBS channel here) and have for a long time but strangely I have only seen part of one episode with Daleks in it.
I think it is neat that they are bringing Dr. Who back, I wonder how long it will be until it gets here.
Another cool unit would be the Tardis.

It was once said that the media had such a big influence on human culture that it had become genetic, so if a baby was lost in the jungle and raised by wild animals having never seen a TV, it would one day yell out “A three hour tour”.

Mwhahahah! Exterminate! Exterminate!
I decided to make this one, basicly because it serves my own ends, and also to see if I could do an ok job of it.
In the mars mod there is going to be a great wonder called the "British robotic labs", it will spawn the most deadly experimental robot guard, the Dalek.

They won't be real Daleks, with little blobby monsters inside, but will just be nerdy model robots, produced by the half crazy british lab techicians on mars in order to pass the long dull days, and to avoid thinking about freezing to death if the generators fail... This gives me the chance to use one of the other units that were going to be spawned from an improvement as a UU for one of the races and reduces the overall number of units I've got to come up with. :)

EDIT: the dome is civ coloured.
Here's a preview of the little guy so far;

I like that little Dalek. :goodjob:

I first encountered Daleks in a kid's book on astronomy more than a decade ago; the section about the possibility of extraterrestrial life had a box about famous fictional alien species, which featured Daleks. I didn't learn anything more to speak of them till I had a run in with a bunch of Dr Who-crazed Brits and Canucks recently.

Thankyou SmokingMirror ... this is a unit that I never ever expected to see in Civ ... therefore I change back to my first custom avatar for a bit ...

Wee Done Sir :goodjob:

Space 1999 and Mr Rolo have passed me by completely, and I'm pretty hazy about Captain America (I think I just about know who he was meant to be, but only through guest appearances in other Marvel comics!).

I wouldn't have thought Conan the Barbarian to be in the same league as Captain Kirk, the Daleks and co - I mean, I know who he is and have seen the films, but I wouldn't be especially shocked by someone else not knowing. I used to work with someone who hadn't heard of "Ben Hur" ("Apparently 'Lord of the Rings' has won as many Oscars ad 'Titanic' and something called Ben something," she said) - now that's worse. However, she also didn't know whether man had landed on Mars and didn't know what Neanderthals were, so I think she was a special case.

:eek:
Indeed, a special case. Ben Hur in particular is a very educational film, even for nowadays, too surprised someone wouldn't know about it(especially Messalah's speech when he returns as commander, recently saw it again for Easter and when I realised what he said I was like "get OUT of here!!!").

What's puzzling enough is that with the current status, I can honestly see more and more people getting like that. Sure, it's not something you'll not be able to live your life not knowing, but if one things like that, soon enough we'll be as good as "robotas"(with the Czech meaning of the work) for any purpose.

One has to seek a little more in life than that.

I'll also agree with fe3333au, in the cult status, and I don't think at all it's for nerds, unless by nerds you specify people who want a little bit of thought in something they watch and funny elements.

I know I watched it(unfortunatelly, Greek tv has stopped transmitting it after Tom Baker) with a whole bunch of people who could be said that they are a lot of things, BUT nerds.

And Godamn, SM, that's a bloody awesome representation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And fe3333au, I liked the cybermen too from that series. I had one made for a civ2 mod I was working on once.
