Update: Added special case units and adjusted the categories and color scheme.

Howdy,

I put together a little cheat sheet for unit upgrade paths and when they become available. The upgrade path is the column and the era available is the row. The support units are the only units that have no upgrades, so don't waste your time building tons of battering rams thinking they'll upgrade to siege towers or engineers later on. Hope this helps some of the newer folks.

One thing to keep in mind before you upgrade units is that the new unit will cost higher maintenance fees per turn, so unless you need that unit upgraded immediately to start your conquest or engage an enemy aggressor, save the upgrade till when you'll actually use it.

Love this thanks! Personally do people mass horseman for later cav? I hate doing that since Horseman are useless in most wars after turn 100 or so since people pump out Knights by then. Then they will sit for a long time or be a nice scout.

Maybe its better to research the cavalry tech and build 6 horseman before it completes. I play gold heavy and I use the Unit discount card. I see this strat to be useful for Russia since Cossacks are beastly and while Knight are useful - you need Oil for Tanks.

No that's true....

Melee can mean

"Warrior-Mech Inf" only
OR
Warrior-Mech Inf & Spear-AT
OR
Warrior-Mech Inf & Spear-AT & Chariot-Modern Armor & Horseman-Gunship

Depending on the situation (its Not clear)


also... not all special units replace standard units
Redcoats->Mech Infantry
Imperial Guards->Mech Infantry
Samurai->Muskets?Infantry
?Rough Riders?->Tank
Saka Horse archers->Crossbow?Field Cannon

all don't replace anything (you can't upgrade to them)..and some others don't follow standard upgrades

Maryanu Chariot Archers->Crossbow
Longship->Privateer
 
Think you forgot about Modern ATs (Information Era Anti-Cavalry)

Also what Krikkit said (plus Berserkers => Musketmen and Varu => Tanks which he didn't mention)

Thanks for the replies. I've updated the matrix to include the unique units that don't just replace a standard unit.

Good catch on the Modern AT units, Onii-chan, I completely forgot about those.
