I am still in my first epic game of C3C, vs 1.22 and i am facing some problems.
First, it seems that I can not upgrade my horsemen I know chivalry and already have knights running around but my few remaining horsemen can't be upgraded. Is this normal, a new feature. or a bug(gy)?
Second, I also know gunpowder and i even have a saltpeter connected and in my resource box, but I am unable to build any musket carrying unit.
What is going on?

Btw, the lack of upgrading horsemen is not caused by a lack of funding

What civ are you playing? If you're playing the Dutch, you can't upgrade to muskets. The Swiss Mercenary is cheaper and doesn't require it.

As for the horses, do you have barracks in the city that's trying to upgrade? And does that city have access to the resource? That's the only other reason I can think of.

Post a save, and we can look at it.

Thanks Turner_727, I am playing as the dutch. So that explains that part. I was already wondering myself if i should build muskets in the first place considering the strength of the SM's.
But, I would like to have the possibillity to make this decision myself and not be forced to by the game. The SM is a replacement of the pikeman isn't it and not of the musketeer. Also nothing is mentioned (at least i could not find it) in the civilpedia.

About the horses, I need to take a closer look.
Anyway, thanks again

But it's cheaper than the musketeer, it has the same defense, and can spawn a GA when it wins a battle against a non-barb unit. And yes, it's the replacement for the pikeman, but it also is a better unit than the musketeer, IMO.

Not sure if you can take a spear and upgrade it to a musket...have you tried that? I would think that the upgrade is like the build, since the SM is 'better' (cheaper, same defense) then it would go to that.

One hopes you're not trying to attack with the musket....;)

Ofcourse, you are completely right and I do agree that it is the better unit. And I had no intention of using the musket in the attack :)
But still I don't see why the program decides for you that it is not possible to make a not so clever move like building musketeers. If the SM would have been a replacement for the musket, yes than it would make sense and be in line with the other UU's but now it merely shows that the SM might be a little overpowered.
Anyway, probabbly i am making a lot of fuzz about nothing, but sometimes these inconsistencies make me

Last remark: no i can't upgrade spears either to musket, in fact i can not build them at all.

I happen to think that the build menu gets too cluttered. You want more options. This sounds like an idea for the civ4 forums! Toggleable build menus.... give you the option to build units like this.

In a way, having the musket available makes sense. The UU is supposed to replace one unit, not one or two. The musket should be available to build, even if you don't use it. I know I wouldn't...the SM is too good a unit to make it a musket. No, it deserves becoming that rifleman or infantry....

So...have you figured out why your horsies won't upgrade?

No i need th check the game at home, now i am at work
Probably it will take some time before i have time to check it. Tonight i need to watch another important simulation of civilization. The soccer match of the Netherlands at the European Championships.
They need to win, the UU in that game better be a more offensive one :) and even then they are dependent on the result of another match.
Like you being close to a spacevictory and ending up defeated by a cultural victory

I thought your UU was "Van the man", but I think, our german team will have a lot of problems because the czech have a full HP bar (they play with fresh players and save their best players for the next match), so your team only has to beat those well fortified barbarians from Latvia...
But regicide is enabled...if you don't make it to the next round the Bondscoach has to go...(same for our Rudi)
The only thing that would help Germany is a Great Wonder...

I finally had time to continue this game and to have a look why my horseman didn't upgrade. Apparently it was a lack of funding afterall
I did not realize that the upgrade costs were that heavily increased in C3C. :(
