Units are too small

My sentiments exactly. We wouldn't even be talking about this if the bar was still around. If they have to make freakishly enormous units just to compensate, maybe it is not such a good solution.

I think it would be okay showing multiple units if they rendered them close together like in a formation or pack

Oh, sorry, I must have stumbled onto the civwhinerscentre forum by mistake?! Man, all some people seem to do here at the moment is whinge and whine-its getting so friggen frustrating  It's always 'the units are too big', or 'the units are too small', or 'I don't like multi-unit representation', or 'I don't like the colours'. Sheessssh, they are just graphics people, and stills never do video game graphics any justice IMO-especially not 3D graphics.
Now, if you want to debate the real meat of the game-like combat, civics, diplomacy and trade or religion-then I would be happy to do so. If graphics are what are so important to you people, then by all means go and play a FPS!!!

Whining about the whining only adds to the problem. Give it a rest.

The good thing is that it seems to be easy to change from one to the other depending on one's preferences.

All we can do now is whine and salivate. So stop whining about the whining and let everyone seeth with anticipation.

For my part, the whole look/texture of the game seems much more cartoonish than Civ 3. It reminds me of the video advisers in Civ 2--which I turned off twenty turns into my first game and never, ever turned back on.

But I doubt any of this stuff will subtract from our enjoyment. The immersion of the game has nothing to do with the graphics or the leader heads--it's all about the gameplay and between Religion and Civics, I am officially tantalized.

As this is a screenshot, it doesn't become clear whether the third unit (the "house"-unit) was just printed on the screen, when the picture was taken, or if it was just disappearing, or if there was just a graphics error.

Anyhow, the other two units are perfectly visible, and I have to state that the smaller units look much more immersive than the big toy soldiers (although, of course, they are still to big in relation to the houses, but in total they make for a much more realistic image).

So, just away with the big toy soldiers!
sure looks better. but will we be playing at that zoom level? if not, will they be at a good size? =\
hey, ill wait to see ;)

I don't see how it will be any easier than creating a full line of brand-new unit graphics to replace all of the standard ones in Civ3. Probably a little harder, actually.

Actually, Frekk, its as easy as going into the XML file and changing the units size within that file-or at least thats what Soren has told us. I wouldn't be suprised if he changed the size in these recent screenies just to show us how easy it is-and thus shut up all the whiners who can't seem to help but look on the negative side of everything.

What's that got to do with implementing health bars (or some graphical equivalent thereof)? That's the context we were discussing.

Bizarre ... how can you be conservative about a game that isn't even finished, much less that you have ever played?

OK, you didn't make it clear that you were discussing health bars. As for my so-called 'conservatism', I was merely referring to all the people who are whining about what is ultimately eye-candy. After all, if that's all the game is to you, then by all means go and play a game where graphics really are important. For me, though, I am far more interested in the meat of the game-as I stated above-things like civics, combat and the like. Trust me, if I hear things about them which I think are gonna suck, then I won't hold back from my complaints-but not about something which in the past has proven the most easiest thing to fix.

No... :crazyeye:

Hehehehehe I know what you're suggesting. That won't be the case in Civ4.

That's what they did in Rome Total War... (Rome... Rome something)

Uh?

No, in Rome Total War you can see in the global map the icon of the commander in chief of your legion, even if you zoom down.
I mean if you zoom in to the unit, the single icon will become a moltitude of guys of the same type or just a resized single guy?

The fact you have units represented by standard icons, even animated, gives to me a sense of infinite lonelyness .
I mean, in Civ3 if you look at aerial view, a city at size of 10 in middle age is a small city surrounded by huge walls, there are 3-4 huts, you see wonders ( if any ) and improvements ... very sad.
I would like to see a sort of resized and rescaled city. If at size of 10 it should be HUGE with many, a lot of huts, houses, streets, people walking around and of course the right city improvements around with any of the wonders builded.
It's not a big request if we are talking about aerial view of a city. There's no need to use huge graphics. It simply needs some sort of static graphics powered by your graphic card: something acceptable to see.

In the main map, of course, there should be conventional city, not necessarily the exact reproduction of the city as you see in aerial view.

Of course this for Civ4 and the pc we can buy today, in Civ5 I want more :D.

@ Aussie : I also put gameplay over anything else. It's just that Civ wouldn't be cool if it was in black and white with pixels as big as a smiley at CFC... I'm not asking for eye-candy, I'm asking for effective graphics, and multiple units don't make it for me. They don't serve any purpose other than giving some people a false sense or realism. Single units with a health bar would be better : you wouldn't have to count the soldiers each time, just the height of a bar (which was differently coloured in Civ2 and Civ3) next to the soldier, which is faster and straight to the point. Also, multiple units add to confusion by making me believe they are many units on the battle ground where there are just a few of them.

@ Herr Doktor : I think the aerial view is totally useless. It doesn't serve any purpose in the game.

i think i've been saying this along time now...

Civ games are NOT graphics based for the eye candy whores amongst us, but civ has always had Gameplay as most important.

But instead of discussing the game actually being fun, or the Religions that u think might suck becoz there isnt Satanism or something is perhaps discusable. But this is leading no where, and the ppl that are NOW complaingine endlessly over the size of units, or the colors or whatever uselessness they think of will when the game is actually released whine about other things, things more important to a Civ game. Or stuf they didnt know becoz they only seem to care about graphics...

Boy, I'm tired of people whining over people whining about the whining over the game. :p

The whining about the whining whining-whiners is really getting to me, too.

Seriously, give it a rest, folks. Arguments that have merit, whether they're positive or negative, will be recognized as such by reasonable people. Arguments that don't, won't. At this point, the mindless complaints are as annoying as the mindless praise.
