Units to big!

There's going to be a lot going on at the same time on the map. The worst I could imagine is having to click a unit just to see which unit type it is.
That's what unit plates are for. Clicking units is never required.

I was hoping for more and smaller units in one tile than civ 5 had. and they even made them bigger in Civ 6 and less units. sad, roling in with 1 tank? wow what a big invasion. I want alot of units so it looks more like a war game to. disappointet in that
Sorry you're disappointed.

Really? are you stupid. its a war game to. you can declare war and have a military. yes you can build stuff and a civilization to and try to keep the peace. but the war is there. or else they could remove all that

Well is apple pie a fruit? I mean it does have apples in it.

Just because it has war in it doesn't make it a war game.

It's a game that overall is designed to have a board-game aesthetic. That comes with big, easy to see units. The fact that it has combat elements does not somehow translate into having realistic unit sizes.

But I'm pretty sure there will be someone who mods the game to have more realistic proportions.

Thank goodness they did! I'm really happy about that!

Here we go again with the "units are too big" complaint. The units are representations. Just like game pieces on an old fashioned game board, like Risk or Stratego.

I don't mind the unit size. The comic booky nature of some of them bothers me more. What I would absolutely love would be to have Great Generals with leader specific appearance since they seem to come out in an era specific manner. I.E. A Genghis Khan great general that actually looks like Genghis Khan. This would make their unique bonuses even cooler. Sorry if this is off topic.

The size of unit sprites has nothing to do with "poor eyesight". (every unit has a distinct icon which you can use to identify them).

...and this is exactly the problem. Civ 5 introduced a system where you never even really look at the unit themselves, you just look at their icon. Why have unit animations at all at that point? Just have icons only.

The more units you cram into a tile the less distinct that unit becomes. Fewer sprites means clearer units which, hopefully, will one day mean getting rid of the eyesore Civ 5-style icons.

You will never get rid of icons on the map. No matter how much effort you put into making the map read well, icons will always be easier to read than moving shapes. So removing Icons would always be a net loss for playability.

Did civ4 and before have icons? Considering that with stacking you could have dozens on units on the same time, I don't see how that would work. I vaguely remember having to mouse over lots.

No - The units (stacks) had a flag indicating which player owned them, and little dots indicating how many and their status (awaiting orders, has moves left, no moves left, automated).

Unit icons showed up only in Civ 5.
Well, sort of. In Civ 1 units were icons :) The whole map was kind of what is now the 'strategic view'.
Unit representations as figures came with Civ II and stayed, getting more elaborate with every new Civ game.

As for the scale, it is just fine. Units here are just pieces on your game board, aren't they? Essentially, Civ is a PC enabled board game, which otherwise would be too complicated to play due to excessive calculations and lack of company (human opponents).

it just doesnt look right with that big scale. a tank that is bigger than a whole city looks stupid. I know its easier to see. you have icons to see what unit it is to.

I don't know if you played any civ games before Civ5 but Civ4 was my first and I got used to the quirky scale.

I dont really notice it now. It is more jarring after civ5 but it's more nostalgic to me.

In Civ 4 every unit was always instantly identifiable without icons.

Icons and the 'strategic map' are excuses and crutches for poor graphical design. I cannot believe that the trend in Civ is actually a return to completely abstract, almost graphic-less, board game imagery.
