HELLO!!!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!!! Good to see this thread in action again...What we really need are some new units that are unique and focused on new themes...POST THEM!!! There are a lot good units sitting on someone's hard drive waiting to come out...I just know it!!

John

They look awesome, gazza! :goodjob:

Nemo units are just simply better, than those ugly thingies you call "high res"... :) :D

Thanks :)

As for so-called 'hi-res' - I've yet to see any that are any good. They're generally scanned and reduced pics that look great at ten times the res, but IMHO look a bit crap as civ units.

Long live Nemo-style units :p

Exactly... :goodjob:

I often find that there are literally thousands of Civ II units out there, but when you discriminate as to the ones you would ACTUALLY use, their numbers are often a bit smaller in scope.

Hi-res units are the result of mass-production for a lot of designers or contributors. Yes, we should all spend hours making each unit perfect, but sometimes (and I'm certainly guilty of this) need necessitates haste.

When I say we need more units with different themes- I'd like to also say, there is nothing wrong with finding ways to make existing units better! Nemo's units did contribute a lot to style and I would like to see other artistic renditions of units as well.

For what its worth, there is definitely room for hi-res, but lets face it- original art really rocks.

John

P.S. anarchy...thanks for the ST units man!

fairline: good to see you here :goodjob: I didn't see that Tier before: I like it :)

Hey Anzac,

thanks for the welcome. I'm not so sure it's universal though after I dared to post some Nemo-esque units here :D .

Never realised there was so much strength of feeling against them. I'll know better in future..............

Isn't this thread supposed to be for graphics posts, rather than slagging off one particular style of unit presentation? (I guess I'm guilty of that when I brought up 'hi-res'). To my mind, as long as some time and effort, and hopefully a bit of artistic skill, have been put into a graphic it shouldn't matter whether they are stylised isometric or ripped from bigger pictures. I like both Nemo type and 'photo-realistic' units as long as they are done well. What I hate are scenarios with thrown together units files with no common style, often using the same crappy scans of larger pics without any care put into cleaning them up.

So lets see some posts of the best of both worlds.

Here are some of my 'cartoonish' (I prefer stylised) efforts:

Some ancient Macedonians:

.....and at the risk of subjecting myself to a lynching at the hands of the anti-Nemo brigade, some modern British cartoon APCs and tank:

I really love those tanks, gazza (or Fairline?)! :goodjob: And the others are good too. :)

Gonna post these in the right place, in order to not get caught in the fire of the increasingly silly ANGA-anti-ANGA nonsense...

African units :
1st line : zanzibari workers, pioneers, shooters, porters carrying supplies, ammunition and ivory, and slaves/pathfinders
2nd line : manyuema warriors, archers, chief, pygmies, cannibals, steppe warriors, and ruga-ruga (raiders)
3rd line : H.M.Stanley, european officer, Emin Pasha, native garrison, interpreter, egyptian officer, and missionary

Thx ;)

-I think it's time to end this silly hi-res vs. nemo thing... I honestly don't care so much how graphics are made... as long as they do the job and are pleasing to the eye. And I see a lot of damn fine work in this thread, regardless of graphical styles. Its a damn good thing that civ2 is still being played and has such active support, with so many new scenarios coming up and so much quality artwork being made.
