In my mind
I always wanted to work toward something when playing a game, like unlocking a new feature or something like that. You might have to get above a certain score, complete specified scenarios at a certain difficulty level, or other things like that.

Any ideas or comments you have on this subject please post here.

How about instead of by score unlocking things like units and tech why not have small objective that are random based on your oppenants and Resourses and other things you have---------
An example would be if i were rome and an enemy of mine was germany i would have to capture X number of there cities and you unlock a tech or unit based on your scientfic level

Woah! this is a great idea :goodjob: ! like winning a diplomatic victory would unlock a peacekeeping unit. or winning a historograph victory would unlock a new civ. although i don't think unlockable techs would be a good idea. great idea  !

No, I think that everything should be available right from the start. Otherwise, the unlockables sound like Cheat Codes. Plus, it could change the way the game is played. The only changes should be the maps.

And how would the AI unlock anything? Wouldn't this make it harder than it already is for our little electronic friends?

when we unlock something in the game it is automatically unlocked for our electronic enemies

Oh! got it! Then it's quite a neat idea. Mmm... too bad i can't change my vote now though.

The unlocking of scenarios is an ok idea. But civs, units, improvments... NO. Any modder would quickly unlock them.

Besides, the whole Civ game is about unlocking things... via the tech tree... you research gunpowder... and VOILA!! you get Musketmen and can see saltpeter on the map... comprende me??

I like the unlocking scenarios idea, but it would be easy to get the scenario from someone else.

Hmm, I would like to be able to unlock maybe 2 or 3 new Civs, and maybe a few scenarios, but not techs. And, maybe the possibility of an unlockable unit every age?

Mewtartio, how are unlocking things like cheat codes ( i'm confused  ). I mean, the comuters would get the stuff when it was avadiable to you. Also, isn't that what civ is about: changing strategies to get a funner game. If you used the same strategy every time, you would get bored.

(I like the map&scenario&civs ideas.)

HOw do you make a poll?

I think unlocking things works very well in a number of genres. I don't think TBS is one of them. The ability to mod the game is so prevalent that anybody could copy the scenarios/civs/whatever for the wider community. Secondly, balance is critical for TBS, moreso than in many other genres, and unlockable stuff generally has to be "cool" or superior or something to deserve being locked in the first place. Such works against the TBS model, in my opinion.

For me, semi-strong vote against scenarios, civs, or difficulty levels and very strong vote against techs, units, buildings, wonders, etc.

i dont think it would be a big deal if the things that were unlocked were jokes. like say, if I get a cultural victory on regent, I unlock a pimp

3 things

1)so i get those units from someone else, big deal? there are some people that don't download stuff, for them they would truely be unlockables

2)is modding is such a big deal, how about different editor options as unlockables ( i personally am against this option, but some of you guys may)

3)if you don't want to change the structure of the game, how about new unit animations, or diferent leaderheads, pure cosmetic things

The only things that should be unlockable should be funny things - kinda like the Elvis unit and JAIMO unit. Wasn't there a Firaxian civ in SMAC too? Stuff like that.

Easter egg type things would be cool to unlock during games.
