Thal,

Am having a little trouble with the internet here right now, due to a local thunderstorm. Had a long, carefully worded post all ready to submit when it froze and wiped out everything. Oh, well, here's another attempt at my message.

Played a perfectly fine game of G&K last weekend, without any mods, and had no problems what so ever. Even won the game!

However, this weekend I tried playing with a number of mods, especially including UP v13, but ran into serious problems. The minor ones were lots of tool tip errors, especially when viewing the extended horizontal research tree.

The more serious problems, though, were numerous crash to desktops, either while playing Civ-5 or when trying to restart the game after a CTD. Also, the normal animated leader screens that should display during diplomacy events kept getting replaced with glaringly bright, red & white checkerboard backgrounds.

Spent all friday night and day yesterday tweaking all sorts of Windows, video card and Civ-5 settings in hopes of fixing the problems, but to no avail. The only thing that would work was to deactivate UP v13, which I really hated to do, as UP/VEM used to be great fun and fairly stable.

Accidentally deleted my savegame files from yesterday, and my lua.log seems to have been overwriten today, but I do have some .mdmp files from yesterday. Tried to upload two of them, but civfanatics will only let me send just one. Hope you or someone else knows how to read and interpret this .mdmp file, as I surely do not.

Thanks.

Phooey,

After successfully playing a G&K game without CivUP yesterday, I started another game today with a couple more mods added, including "smooth pack".

Quickly encountered the dreaded red/white leader backgrounds, game crashes, and some other problems. Removing "smooth pack" cleared up numerous small problems, but I still encountered the red/white leader background problems and game crashes.

Saw some posts on CivFanatics suggesting the leader background problems might be due to using an older videocard (like mine) being pushed to its limits, so that might be a partial explanation.

Question: Would using an older videocard also contribute to game crashes?

Torvald the red and white means that the video card doesn't have enough memory to render the scene, or that it cannot render it. Time to get a new video card or play on smaller maps. Just be a bit careful because there are some so called "new" cheap video cards, that are actually not good enough to run Civ5.

Cheers

glider1,

I bought & installed a new Nvidia GTX 550 Ti (2GB) video card today, and Civ-5 has been running much better. Was playing with a big bunch of other mods (not CivUP today) and my first crash didn't happen until turn 144.

Also, I just saw a post from someone in the CivFanatics Technical Support forum saying he'd had a crash free game after tweaking one of the Nvidia control panel graphics settings, so will try that next. (I think it was to change the 3d image settings slider to maximum performance.)

If the game crashes completely stop, I will gladly go back to using CivUP again for my next G&K game.

Hooray,

I just finished a CivUP v13 game (with only two crashes), and the dreaded red & white checkerboard background only showed up once, just after the "you're defeated" screen at the end of the game at turn 461. (I lost to a UN Vote.)

Played the game with my new video card using default Civ-5 video settings, except for the texture quality setting changed from High to Low.

The only other mods used with CivUp v13 were: Goody Huts-No Maps, Policy-Free Warrior, Global-No Conquered Allies, and Global-Barbarian XP Level 6.

Noticed that many of the tooltip errors in the expanded tech tree were gone in this game, so perhaps one of the additional World Wonders mods that I'd used earlier had been causing some of those glitches.

At any rate, I can now confirm that upgrading my video card has fixed the checkerboard background problem, plus I'm getting a lot fewer game crashes now. Am glad I can now focus on having fun playing G&K with CivUp, instead of constantly tweaking video & Windows settings and then restarting crashed games.:)

Good news glad for you. I got through a complete game of GnK with CivUP13 on an older 2010 grade laptop without any crashes. Your rare crashing is most likely something else than CivUP13.
Cheers
