Update the Leaderheads?

Might I suggest updating the leaderheads associated with this modification? I feel like leaderhead quality is a fairly important part of the artistic quality of the game - and I'm not even one to much care about art. Regardless, when I see two leaderheads that look the exact same besides a color swap (Kublai Khan and Sejong, for example), and I happen to encounter them both in the same game, it's a bit unsettling.

Currently, better leaderheads exist for leaderheads that are being used in this mod.

Cleopatra: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=8664 (albeit I don't really like this one, either)

Personally, I just removed Cleopatra. I also removed a bunch of people who had completely white eyes on my system (Ivan, Henry VIII, Kangxi) because they creeped me out (I'd assume this doesn't happen for everybody, but since they were all low quality besides Henry VIII anyway I wouldn't miss them). A couple of leaderheads there exists alternatives for, like Basil, Dido, and Jayavarman VII but I think the ones now are fine (that or the others aren't much of an improvement).

Also, a lot of the Civilopedia icons are small for some reason, which really stands out.

If anybody would be interested, I can maybe upload a file with the changed leaderheads, so that you can just put the new leaderheads into the mod folder to update them. I won't be doing it for at least a couple of days (I have a lot of other work to do), but I definitely plan to get around to it eventually.

All the small leaderhead civilopedia icons are because they were dds'ed with mipmaps on.
I went through all the modular leaderheads in modules folder plus all RoM's unit icons (except battle elephant and abyssian archer). I think (hope) most of it will be included in Rom patch 2.92.
The reason is that most people play with high texture, so they never discover this "error".
Also the non-original non-modular leaderheads needs re-dds'ing
And there are still also a couple of building icons and more that need to be re-dds'ed :
Spoiler :

National Wonders :

Wow. Some of those are amazing! The current Charles V looks like he's wearing a pink mask and the Afonso LH is just Louis XIV in green, so I would greatly appreciate seeing these new ones in-game.

I asked Zap to change it a long time ago.
Charles V looks so much better in the link.

I'll try to get all of these done by the end of the day (even though I should be working on classwork - I like to procrastinate). I'll upload a file once I am done.

:Edit: Yep, no way in the world I'm getting this done today. Maybe tomorrow.

And... I'm done. I apologize for the delay - summer classes kind of ruin things.

The following leaderheads have been changed:
  • Afonso
  • Ashurbanipal
  • Cetshwayo
  • Charles V
  • Cleopatra
  • Franco
  • Henry VIII
  • Hiawatha
  • Jayavaraman
  • Menelik II
  • Mongkut
  • Nubachadnezzar
  • Richelieu
  • Sejong
  • Selassie
  • Deganwada
  • Suppiluliuma

Warning! I made these changes with Age of New Dawn installed. Ergo, I do not know if the leader files are the same without Age of New Dawn installed. Either way, the first step of the installation directions will be to make a back-up folder in case things go awry.

Second warning before installing Mongkut: Mongkut's eyes are a bit buggy. There was originally an issue in the downloaded file where his eyelids were pink. While that issue was fixed, the bottom of his eyelids are now white during certain frames... which can be kind of creepy. Albeit I think I still prefer a buggy, good-looking Mongkut to a Tokugawa clone.

Third warning before installing Deganawida: Deganawida uses the same leaderhead as Hiawatha. Therefore, if you're using Hiawatha as a custom leaderhead, don't change Deganawida's leaderhead.

Directions for installation:
1) Create a back-up folder somewhere, be it on your desktop or in your Civ 4 folder.
2) Access your Custom Leaderheads folder (c:/Program Files/Firaxis/Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods/Rise of Mankind/Assets/Modules/Custom Leaderheads)
3) For any of the leaderheads you want to update on the above list, move their entire folder to the back-up folder.
4) For any of the leaderhead files you moved in step 3, find these folders in the downloaded .zip file and move those folders to your Custom Leaderheads folder (note: Hiawatha = Deganawida).
5) Now locate your Art XML folder (c:/Program Files/Firaxis/Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods/Rise of Mankind/Assets/XML/Art)
6) Move CIV4ArtDefines_Leaderhead to your back-up folder.
7) Move CIV4ArtDefines_Leaderhead from the downloaded .zip file into this folder.

You should now be all set! Let me know if you encounter any issues or problems with the installation. Here is the download link:

I have also created a "super leaderhead pack". This adds additional leaderheads to the game that were from the 2.8 mega pack, but then formats it to work for 2.9 (you can't ordinarily just take the 2.8 leaders and throw them in the folder - the files have to be edited). The details of this super pack are in the following post.

Here is the super leaderhead pack. It includes:

  • Agamemnon
  • Alexander
  • Ataturk
  • Updated Basil
  • Constantine
  • Hadrianus
  • Harald
  • Hitler
  • Julius
  • Khosrau
  • Komnenos
  • Marcus
  • Maximilian
  • Meiji
  • Nassau
  • Philip
  • Ptolemy
  • Reagan
  • Trajan
  • Vercingetorix
    _______________________________
  • Smoke Jaguar
  • Atotzoli
  • Pachacuti
  • Sennacherib
  • Mursilis

Unfortunately, installation of the leaders above the line is all or nothing. This is because there is a single group file that adds the code to all of these leaderheads, rather than the files being in each separate folder like the previous download. If you don't want one of these leaderheads, you will have to find each instance of the leaderhead's name within the XML files and delete them. This is not necessary for the leaders below the line, as they have their files within their own folders (so if you don't want them, simply don't add the folder).

Installation is simple:
1) Find the Custom Leaderheads folder as described by the post above.
2) Back up your Basil leaderhead folder by moving it somewhere else.
3) Drag all of the files in the downloaded .zip file into this folder.

If the previous steps haven't shown the additional leaderheads, then you might need to turn on Modular Loading for the mod (for some reason I didn't need to but my brother did). To do this:
1) Go to your Mods/Rise of Mankind directory and find the file titled Rise of Mankind.
2) Open this file and change "ModularLoading = 0" to ""ModularLoading = 1"

Oh, sorry about that! I was in the process of reuploading the files to fix some errors, and then I got called into work early and I totally forgot about it. I'll have the pack reuploaded for you in a little bit. I'm going to add Smoke Jaguar, Atotzoli, Pachacuti, Sennacherib, and Mursilis as well, since I had to reupload the Super Leaderhead pack to fix a previous error anyway. The aim of this was to give countries with only one leaderhead an additional leaderhead.

This just leaves Sumeria, Mali, Iroquois, and the Native Americans, I believe. Finding a "Native American" leader won't be a problem, albeit Iroquois will be a bit more difficult (Logan from Civ: Colonization probably looks a bit too much like the updated Mongkut for my liking - albeit I don't really like the updated Mongkut due to his eyes, anyway). If I had to pick a second Sumerian leader, Den's Sargon is probably the best quality leaderhead for that. Then, for Mali, I would use Amra's Sunni Ali (and just name him Sundiata Keita instead). Since doing all of that would take a bit of work, I will leave the addition of these leaders for another day.

I'm very excited to try out your additional leaderheads. So far, they haven't shown up but I just changed the Modular Loading setting as you described. Thanks for creating and posting the file for us.

EDIT: Changing the Modular Loading setting worked. However, my game is still crashing when I click on the Khmer empire or the Ottoman empire. Also, when the game loads, I get this error:

Tag: Civic_Free_Religion in Info Class was incorrect. Current XML file is Modules\cusomleaderheads\ataturk\ataturk_civ4leaderheadinfos.xml

Can you help me with how to fix these problems? Thanks.

My apologies. I don't really check this forum anymore - I've moved onto Fall From Heaven: Rise of Erebus. I found out afterwards that enabling modular loading is bad, but only because it messes up the guilds/corporations (otherwise it doesn't have much of an effect). For some reason the Super Leaderhead Pack doesn't work well on Windows XP, and seems to function only on Windows 7 (and probably Vista). To resolve this, I'd need to split up the .xml files into various other files and folders - an extremely time-consuming process. Seeing as how my updated leaderheads got very, very little attention, I don't really desire to dedicate the time to fixing that - otherwise I certainly would (or if I still played this mod - but it loads up WAY too slowly and I got too many OOS errors online).

To fix this particular issue you need to do a search through Ataturk's files for "FREE_RELIGION". I forget what the replacement civic is for free religion in this mod... but whatever it is, replace it with that. Sorry - I didn't get any such error on my load-up. Maybe I accidentally used an older file when I uploaded them.
