Updated Plans for DoC 1.18

The 1700 AD scenario is now (mostly) a thing again.

I created this after hitting Germany in my list of civs to work on (i.e. 1700 AD). There are a few things missing from the scenario, but after that it is back to the few remaining civs. So an end of this stage of development is in sight.
This looks incredible, I can't wait for this to release! I'm currently taking a short break from Civ to recharge batteries and meanwhile visit the forums to keep the hype up! :D

Since you're currently working on late game civs I'd like to ask how you feel about loading times for turns in late game? Do you think there's much difference compared to early game or to the 1.17 map?

I haven't measured it yet. My subjective impression is that is gets worse after around 1700 AD, but I also don't have that good of a memory of how it is on 1.17. I'd say it's not worse than before the performance improvements that were applied with 1.17.

I know it is for gameplay, but western Prussian cities should be independant in 1700.
For balance purposes, hell no.
There needs to be a counterbalance for France/Britain, or else they scale extremely hard with no repercussions.

I dont want to be mean with you, i just hate all my games end with all civs on late industrial/early global and UK researching fusion, France at early Digital and US launching a rocket. These civs by themselves are broken beyond the pale.

Agreed and I think we better nip this rabbit hole in the bud (metaphor fail 😲) or move it elsewhere. Hmmm you just gave me an idea for a standalone thread; something like "Historicity and Gameplay: The Eternal Symposium".

  1. Adjust AI start conditions and settler behaviour
  2. Adjust number of available slots
  3. Rebase the map branch on the develop branch
  4. Balance tech speed
  5. Implement / adjust, playtest, and balance UHVs for new and existing civilizations + restore 600 AD and 1700 AD scenarios
  6. Merge the map branch into the develop branch - balancing and bug fixes continue from here based on community feedback
  7. Civics rebalancing
  8. Baseline city name mechanics
  9. Indian city art
  10. Immersion: great people names, city names, dynamic civ names
  11. Documentation
Update: I am finally done with step 5. All three scenarios from 1.17 are playable again, and all civilizations are in a state where I have given them a first pass and consider them playable. Of course, that does not mean that there cannot be further changes, but that they are ready to be played and I can get feedback for them.

That can happen after step 6 is completed. This step is not just a formality, so while short, it will take some time to complete. Most importantly, I will return to 1.17 one last time to address the issues reported for it. Then I will rebase the 1.18 work in progress branch on that 1.17 state (i.e. merge them) and promote that state of the mod to the develop branch shortly thereafter, making it available for everyone to play on. Conversely, that state of 1.17 will be the last state of the mod on the old map, any future updates and development will continue on the big map, which at that point will become the official map of DoC.

Around that time I will also post a full changelog for 1.18 on the forum. Lots of things besides the map itself have been changed during development, and while I have mentioned many of them on the forum at some point, I want everyone to have the full list to see what the differences are. I will also post a full list of all civilizations in the mod at that point. Many changes have been made so that almost every civilization has been touched. I think rather than listing all the differences to 1.17 it is more helpful to simply describe what the current state is.

After that, I will immediately continue development. Like I mentioned last time, the next step will be some changes to the civics in the game. I feel pretty good about my current plans for that so I am excited to get to it. More on that when the time comes.

Be on the lookout for more updates.

I remember seeing the New Horizons space probe launch on TV in 2006, and then many years later being hyped to see the up-close pictures of Pluto.

I'm getting that feeling again with 1.18 being so near.

I guess mine would be Cassini leaving for Saturn in '97. Much shorter trip but still one of those "wait this is a thing that is now happening, shut up" type deals.

So are we going to have decolonization of africa, or see a victoria-like african map in 2020AD?

I think I have been quite transparent about what the goals and contents of this version are.

I for one agree. So are we going to... (...vitrolic indignant retort was in progress).

No no I must not. You were quite transparent before about desiring that we don't choose violence in your defense no matter what.

Can't wait to see that shiny new Venice civ!

...In all seriousness though, it's been about 24 hours since I read that post up there and I'm still hyped up. I might need to take a day off work when 1.18 drops.

Everybody is waiting for the new Venice and Israel civs, so you're not alone. I am sure Leoreth will not let us down.

Me too. It's a good day to be a DOC fan.
