Updates and ai

Hello all, I've been malingering here for a while reading the various articles. In particular Snatty, lilinev, futurehermit.
So after playing on a friends version for a while, I decided to purchase Civ4 and warlords expansion. What I would like to know is what updates and ai are you all using? Are you using the 1.61 from the official site? I see there are other ai's one can download, are these any good?

You defenitely want patch 1.61 (vanilla civ4) and 2.08 (warlords). They contain bugfixes, improvements etc from firaxis.

The other ones you talk about are mods. These can be used to alter the game, add more leaders to it, enhance the interface etc. There are several modpacks available that combine the seperate mod-components. You should check them out. A good place to start is the download database on this site. Lookup the forum thread for that mod and decide if this is something for you.

I prefer the unaltered game, but with interface improvements such as the Exotic Foreign Advisor, Modified Special Domestic advisor, plot list enhancement, sevopedia, to name a few.
