I was wondering if it was possible to buy just, say, a Pentium Processor. I'm wondering because I would LOVE to play Civ3, but my PC is kind of old, but I don't want to fork out $900 for a new one. Thanks.

Absolutely! You can just go down to the local computor store and get one! Of course, it may not fit your motherboard. And you may need a new power supply for it. And.... you get the idea.

I have never 'bought' a computer yet.:) I've bought enough pieces to probably make 3 or 4 over the past several years.:D Most recently I upgraded from a Pentium 233 MMX to a PIII 500, but I also had to get a new motherboard. Total cost about $400.:(

Basically, it can be done, but you gotta know what you're doing.

Cool, didn't know there was still dinosaurs on Earth, using 286SX@8Mhz :D Naaah, I'm kidding.
Anyway, if you aren't looking for a processor that belongs to the 8th generation then you can perfectly try ebay. It's quite interesting for finding old proc, for a "relatively" cheap price. I say that because there are always mad people selling old stuffs at an incredibly expensive price. And of course there are also dumb people buying them! So be careful.

I was very glad to read that. 233mhz w/Win95 was pretty cool when I bought it, but these don't go far anymore.

There never was no 80286 @ 8 MHZ. Just 4.33. Oh, and I'd be real careful if I were you. You might end up having to buy a whole new pc, because you blew out your motherboard. Really ! Have someone who knows what he's doing do it.

'286s were made at much higher speeds than that - I used to have a 10mhz and I've seen reviews for machines OCed to 20mhz or more... :crazyeyes

Overclocking mean anything ? I could turn my amd750 into a 1GHZ...and sell it for 25% more. But, I could be wrong here. I just never saw a 286 actually go faster then a 386.

Aren't we fossils ?:skull:

IIRC the CPU was fitted with a special cooler. (peltier or whatever, I can't remember) It cost a small fortune and anyway the 386 became common soon after. Whether it was any good I suppose wasn't the point - the speed freaks would still buy it. ;)

I'm certainly a fossil - I still have my 512kb/CGA Amstrad :D

I first started playing with PCs back before IBM jumped on the bandwagon! My first computer programming experience was done on mainframes. (Yes, Johnny, once upon a time a single computer would occupy a WHOLE ROOM!):D

If you kids are fossils, I hate to think what that makes me!

When I upgrade, I usually keep most of my components and first buy a new motherboard. Just the basic unit though because trying to replace everything is just too darn expensive. This way, you can keep everything else the way it is but still get a new processor while you are in the processing of buying other desired components. Make sure you get what you pay for though, damn ebay kids try to rip everyone off :midfinger

EDIT: Spelling corrections.
