is there a way to upgrade all units at once...it's a pain in the butt to upgrade 105 MIs one at a time. tc&etp.

Activate one of them and hit shift-U. Assuming you have enough cash in the bank, that will upgrade all of your infantry that are in cities with barracks that are connected to the appropriate resources.

By the way, there's a thread in general discussions called the newbie thread that's perfect for questions like this.

Shift-U is a BEAUTIFUL thing, isn't it?

This will upgrade all of your units of the type selected to whatever the current version is, as long as they are in a city with a barracks, they have the resources avalible, assuming you have the cash to do this, of course.

 It is, but I can hardly use it anymore. Playing at higher levels is getting me closer and closer to the edge in all respects. Never have enough cash to just upgrade everything willy-nilly anymore. :(

I always upgrade in the F3 screens. I click Units and have all my units sorted by type. Only then it's a hell of a work to click each unit, click on Upgrade and try to avoid "disband". Is there a faster way to upgrade every spearman to pikeman ? I know of the Shift-U trick, but that is city-by city. I prefer an upgrade-all option in the F3 menu.

Anyone knows ?

THANK YOU!
I've been plagued by the painful process of upgrading defenders one-by-one all the time.

Another important side-benefit of Shift-U:

If you have say a galleon that used up all its moves to get into a city with a harbor, you can not upgrade it, because it has no turn left.

However, if you use another galleon in a harbor city to Shift-U, your first galleon will also be upgraded, saving you one entire turn.

tao: You are right. In PTW it is Shift-U for all. In Civ III it's not for all. I hadn't played PTW often enough to realise this.

In vanilla Civ3 shift-U is also global!

I've seen the situation where a unit has used all its movement points to get to the city with the Barracks, and then another unit of that same type does Shift-U, upgrading both (or all).

Another trick: when you get the Science Advisor telling you that another Tech has been learned, select 'Show me the Big Picture' which takes you to the F6 screen, then go to F1, select cities with units that can now be upgraded, right-click on those units from the city-display screen and upgrade them. You can't do Shift-U this way, but the units are upgraded and can be moved and used in attacks on the same turn that the Technology allowing the upgrade has been researched. This worked in CivIII (haven't tried it in PTM), and is really useful when Chivalry or Military Tradition are researched.

Give it some time Renata and you will find yourself able to upgrade willy-nilly again. I just upgraded 131 Tanks to Modern Armors and left them for Sirp to go a-warring over in SP5. Think he'll have fun with that?
