Upgrading=Expensive

I have done massive unit upgrades when the AI starts to make too many demands. Although I don't have proof that it works this way it seems that I get less demands when my army is considered more powerfull.

That's correct.

You could even prevent that by checking your army strength yourself. On the Info screen, you can change the score chart to show, among other things, military power. If you are weaker than other civs, then others will try to bully you.

I upgrade the cities the enemies are approaching. I try to have a nice cash surplus for that purpose. In creating new units I try to create the newest in upgrading I try to upgrade the city getting attacked. I like to upgrade my highest promoted units first in the beleagered city. I tend to use this style of upgrading when I am playing a castle type of playstyle.

When I don't have the funds to upgrade I simple let the obsolete units become my border patrol they may be weak but they have eyes to see who is approaching.

I upgrade regularly. Great Merchants doing here trade route thing is a great way to get the cash.

As for the upgrade or disband option, it would be nice to be able to get back some resources from disbanding.

Yeah. Nothing like disbanding abuse. Not as good as the caravan wonder rush, but it was still worthwhile.

Stupid question, but you CAN continue the game after a space race victory if you want but it just won't keep score right?

That's right, you can continue the game...there's just very little point ;)

Oh I disagree, there's lots of point as score isin't everything. If for no other reason, than just to see whoever beat you to the spacerace burn :D

Yep enabling or disabling gives different problems. I have played all the Civ games and I just don't ever remember having this kind of problem in the game, I rarly disabled any victory condition in Civ 3, Civ 4 does need some serious end game work.

Really, I often had this problem in III under the harder diff levels. The spaceship victory came around 1900-1930 usually under the harder diffs.
