I've recently got Alpha Centauri, Alien Crossfire, all the patches etc, but I can't even begin the installation. When the autorun starts and I click on the installation button an error message pops up saying "C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Chose 'Close' to terminate the application."??????? Anyone knows what this means, I thought maybe it's the NTFS format of my HDD. I've a 1,8 GHz Intel Pentium (Original COMPAQ machine), 256 RAM, Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controller, Integrated SoundMAX audio etc., but I don't think it's in ther hardware.
PLEEEASE HELP

It may be a damanged disc, that's the only thing I can think of.

This is a known error, thought to be caused by WinXP SP2. To fix, search for the file autoexec.nt on your hard drive (most likely it's in the REPAIR folder) and copy it to the system32 folder.

There is no SP2 installed on this system, so it shouldn't be the SP itself but something else. I've already tried copying the file into system32 folder, but then again another error message pop's up saying that the DOSX.EXE file should be in the AUTOEXEC.NT and in my path. This is the PC on my workplace. At home, I have another PC and it works fine, the only problem I had was the "not supported CPU" error, but I changed the .ini file as written in previous posts ("ForceOldVortexAlgorithm=1") and it works excellent without any crashes
On both machines I have installed WIN XP + SP1

Please post the exact text of the current error message. Is C:\Windows\System32 in your PATH? Where is the file DOSX.EXE?

Hi,

When I try to install AC I get exactly the same error message as posted above by Tiranasazi concerning autoexec.nt.

My OS is: Win XP SP2

I located an autoexec.nt_ file 1 kb of size is that the file? I tried copying this file to the system32 folder, but I still get the same error message..

I was really looking forward to revisiting Planet.. :(

Found the solution on another site dedicated to another great old game. The solution is:

1: You open up the DOS window

2: Locate the following file: C:\WINDOWS\I386\AUTOEXEC.NT_

3: Type expand -r autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

4: And voila! The game installs!

:D
