I'm wrinting a history paper and I need some help with this question:

What negative impacts did mass communication had on society(any countries) between 1919-1991?

in this quesiton:
Mass communication = radio, TV, movie, phone, newspaper, Aparnet(DOD's network, later became the internet)

The only negative impact I can think of is Hitler used mass communication to spread propaganda. Media played a huge role in Vietnam War, however it did have a negative impact on the world(only on US). I think I need some more examples.

Paper due tomorrow......

I don't think mass comm by itself has any negative impacts. On the contrary, it spread knowledge, kept the commoners informed, enabled mass education of the ppl etc etc.
Focus more on the manipulation of mass comm for negative (even evil) purposes by powerful ppl. Mass comm in itself is a neutral tool and its impact would depend on those who employed it (whether for good or evil).
Negative impacts that I can think of - like you said, enabled evil ppl to spread their propaganda much more easily. And locked down whole societies (rigidity of thinking, brainwashing etc) thru control of the media and other means of mass comm. Of coz, this happenned too in the days w/o mass comm.
One possible bad point - enabled the spread of dangerous ideas; i.e. communism, fascism etc which fomented certain chaos to the order of the day. But in the long run, overturned the existing order and gave birth to a better future.

yeah I do mean mass comm can only inflict negative impact when deploy by certain individuals

Hitler is one, is there anyone else?

If not it's ok, I can just totally focus on him

Maybe the problem was that it was widely available for virtually anyone's use. Instant communication meant it spread faster and farther than before. The U.S. experienced a communist "Red Scare" in 1921 because Lenin's success in Russia had inspired widespread workers' strikes around teh world including the U.S., most notably among the shipyard workers in Seattle. Scared the heebie-jeebies out of Washington.

hmmm..... but I'm not allow to take sides though, can't really put communism along with negative impact(although Nazism fits). Besides, I'm a socialist (I think), not that far away from communist.....:p

ok, I have done some research on Hitler's propagandas and I think I got enough materials. Right now I have to work on the positive aspects of mass communication enabled through modern technology, shouldn't be too hard...

TV, movies, radio, Aparnet, satellite, phone, etc. (no paper, cause it has to be modern tech)

anyways, can someone help me a bit for my paper's conclusion? I'm kinda stuck. It's about positive and negative impact technology has upon society between 1919-1991
