Urgent Newbie Question

When I discover a strategic resource, say, in my case, coal, does it only appear (a) in my territory on the map, (b) or in all people's territory on the map.

Because, if (a)---I have no coal in my territory, which sucks.
If (b)---There is absolutely no coal in the ENTIRE world!!!! That is horrible!!!!

Please help me, my dominent French civ depends on it.

Wow, your map must suck. Just continue playing, and hopefully, by some random chance, coal may just appear in one of the approiate space. This does happen at random points in the game at random spots.

My experience is the coal will show up everywhere on the map, not just your territory.

Edit up your resource appearance rates; Firaxis' are absurdly low. I have iron at 176 and coal at 177, for example. Too few resourcs has been an ongoing problem unless edited.

Hey Zouave, what do you have them set at? I've combined stats that you and Trinity have used in your mods and have used them in mine. Plus Killer's OCN idea..this game has gotten a lot better and much more realistic

It's option b.

I find coal the hardest resource to see on the map. A couple of options to find it easier (assuming that there is some -- I've always had a few somewhere in the world) are to hit Crtl-Shift-M to remove the extraneous junk on the map and look around (it might be under a city). Another option is to use one the the different (easier to see) graphics sets that are available for download here.

You may want to install this useful resource graphics modpack:

It makes it much easier to spot resources. Maybe some coals are under fortresses and cities. :)

Very true. I and others changed the graphics for resources so you could see it better. With the default graphics, it's just 3 little dots that may be in the middle of a jungle. Like it was designed to be camouflaged. Honest mistake, though.

Thanks for all your responses---I found some. I always thought that resources appeared in discovering of the tech---but I believe I was wrong. About 10 turns later, some coal appeared in my territory.

PS-Soon, I won't be a newbie. I'm hoping to move onto the next difficulty level (Warlord, I believe)!

No, you were right. What happened is that the coal had disappeared (depleted) from another location.

Sometimes, the AI build their cities right on top of the strategic resource. Just because you couldn't see them, that doesn't mean that they don't exist. Moreover, strategic resource will randomly appear on the map as well as randomly depleted. Therefore, you may have it now, but that doesn't mean it's going to be there in the next turn. :)

It is important, to take the most advantage possible of randomly generated resources, to control a very big part of the map. By building 5 or 6 powerful cities and stopping (some people do this in other Civ games) it would be unprobable that a resource will appear in your empire.

Just build hundreds of settlers and stake out every luxery and as much land as you can get. Then you can have all the resources. In my last game I had about 200 cities while each of the AIs had about 20. I love crapping settlers all over the place. Settler diarreiha rules.

But doesn't each new settler reduce the city population?

Don't worry about small city size! Once you build the railroad, your people will grow like crazy. Your city can go from a size 1 to size 40 within less than 50 turns.:)

And don't forget to build your infrastructure. I usually stake claim to an area I want to build a city and send my workers there to prepare the area. Yes it's overkill, but the city grows like crazy. It may take 5 turns for a settler, but you've got a well developed area for it to move into. Go on a city building spree. It really works.

Another way to prepare for end game. Advanced governments require a well developed infrastructure. You can't survive without marketplaces and banks with democracy or republic. Make sure you build Leonardo Da Vinci, Smiths Trading Co, and Wall Street.

Make sure you manipulate your laborers in your cities to produce maximum shields in time of war, and max pop increase in time of peace.

Well, size 40 or above is a little tough because your city need to be surround by a lot of flood land. However, going from size 1 to size 30 is easy (assuming your city is surround by glasslands). With railroad and irrigation, your city can pretty much grow 1 in every turn. With the Longevity Wonder, they will grow 2 in every turn.

I irrigate 100% of all deserts, plains, and glasslands in my game.

How did this thread go from resource rates to infrastructure?
