useful vs. lasting

would it be better to use a SGL to rush the building of a useful wonder or a wonder that lasts through the ages.

although I have beaten the Regent level before, this is the first time (if you can believe it) I got a SGL on a regent game, and I've never been faced with deciding which wonder I want to get.

right now my IMMEDIATE choices are:

Pyramids
Oracle
ToA
MoM

by how useful it is, I would assume the ToA would be a great pick, not to mention its the most expensive (and I believe no other AI, at least to my knowledge, has Polytheism) but the Pyramids/MoM do not become obsolete, and might be more useful later on in my capital.

right about now no specific victory conditions are necessary, and I'm playing as the Hitties if that matters

I would pick the pyramids without a second thought. It is both the best wonder 'now' and it lasts throughout the game. A free granary in every single basically doubles your growth in each city and this results in exponentially faster growth when you are building cities.

I'd do pyramids.

But that's just me.

sounds like the chorus is singing "Pyramids"

thanks :)

If you get a sgl early in the game and have an option of rush building a wonder that would give you a ganary or barracks in ever city type but have already built lots of these.

Can I sell off all of these before I hit the rush wonder button or shield wise am I just better keeping my SGL for another wonder?

thanks

If you can get the pyramids, do that. Unless your island is really small.

You can still sell off any granaries after you've built the pyramids, but it is easier to find them before :crazyeye: (probably you'll waste a lot of food if you sell before you build).

Pyramids would be a no-brainer for most.
If the AI is already up your lip - but that shouldn't be so bad at this level - the Temple of Artemis is quite handy as well, for culture-stealing tiles from the AI. You can build closer to the AI without fear of flipping. Beelining to Military Tradition and avoiding Education means your Temple of Artemis can last a long time.
Oracle or Mausoleum of Mausollos would seem a waste of an SGL.

If you are stuck on an island, you may want to save the SGL for the Lighthouse.
If you are boxed in the corner of a continent by AI civs, left with small territory, and dont like early wars, ToA looks like the right choice.
In any other case yes, Pyramids are the way to go.

I played several years before getting my first SGL

Nice choice :D.
Well, had you been religious, ToA would have been out of question.

If you're on an arcipelago map and/or on a small(ish) landmass, Lighthouse may be the right choice. In any other case, go for Pyramids.

thanks everyone for the help.

I ended up using it to get the pyramids like everyone suggested, and I ended up grabbing a few other wonders too (Great Lighthouse, SoZ, STAoW) and I warred with Spain, wiped them out, and in the processes, got the Oracle.

it really depends on where you are, on a large continent then either pyramids or toa or wait for sun tzus if pyramids are gone, on an island then lighthouse or even great library,

IMO, out of these wonders, the Pyramids are both the most useful and last the entire game. The only reason I don't usually build them myself is their tremendous (for the early game) cost, so if you can get them in one turn, go for it!

It would depend on desired victory condition. For most games probably The Pyramids, but if you want a 20k victory game, then The Oracle. ToA for a 100k game I'd think. There also exist other factors, such as map type as already mentioned.

If you were playing on a pangea on a tiny map and are rexing out well the toa could give you a very early domination victory
