Useless units

There is no "most useless" unit. Depending on your style of play, every unit has a usefull purpose. Just like in "real life", many of the units have a very specialized purpose, but that does not make them "useless" just because that purpose does not occur very often. It is there if you want/need to use it.

There may not be useless units, but there are redundant ones. What the heck are chariots doing in the game anyway?

Righto! Early in the game you have to "make do" with what you have, and finding a chariot or two in huts can really make you a military "strongman" in the early going. That said, I normally do not build them because I go for crusaders (Monotheism) right after getting monarchy, so by the time I get the wheel, the time for chariots has passed.

CARRIERS in my opinion are (ONE OF) the most useless units. So is is most aircraft, except for choppers, that can be useful (but not essential).

You think stealth fighters are useless?

Don't agree on that one.
It's always handy to have some offensive units at hand to change the minds of barbs or agressive neighbours. Talking doesn't solve all, besides it costs a lot of money to bribe all barbs...

WRONG! The most important unit for a spaceship victory is the humble camel. The camel and the freight unit will speed you to to a swith landing.

I *DO* play for spaceship victory.

Isn't *that* the *WHOLE* purpose of Civilization? If you want to be militarist I can think of dozens of games that are INFINITELY better than Civilization as WARGAMES, and if you (like me) *LOVE* to kill everyone around you why not Unreal Tournament (MY personal fav)?

*BUT* the whole charm of Civilization is to pursue inteligent management of resources to get to AC.

(I also own SMAC, but havent played it much, think I am gonna install it and start some Civs on Alfa C. )

Though I must admitt it feels GOOOD to crush a competing Civ thats a pain in the Wastedisposal Area. ;)

As for stealth fighters, I have never built them. When I found fighters and carriers useless, I stopped bothering with airpower, though I built CHOPPERS in a game once when I had exccess shield capacity (I wanted that city to build an improvement that needed a discovery that was due any turn and didnt want the city to start produce some other units) I found the choppers usefull as a "firebrigade" unit to repel barbarians & others where I was weak.

The ability to stay aloft for several turns and cross water made it usefull in the archipelago of that game.

An archipeligo game is very usefull for sth fighters. They can take out anything that a helicopter can, and can attack more than once. You would also want a strong navy, full with BB and AGIES and carriers. If you want a different technique, go for mass subs and misiles. I prefer the former, but if you have time to build them, subs will work. Its too bad the paratrooper unit isn't more powerfull, otherwise you could make an airborn attack.

What are archipeligoes anyways? (Never figured that out). Also, stealth fighters are one of my fav. conquest units. I love them for battle. I'm not so good at land based strageties, but air and navy, now that's where my strageties go to town :-)

Have you been able to bomb a city out of existance? I seem to be able to get them down to one citizen but that is it.

The most useless unit in the game is.... Oh darn i can't think of it.

Get the point guys. All units are useful and useless in different games and scenarios.

Still, it's interesting to talk about how people play and thus how they use or don't use units...it gives diff. ideas and strategies.

Most usless unit in my opinion: destroyer. Might as well say goodby to 60 shields. Cruisers work much better, they can actualy win battles... One movement point is not that much, especialy if you have Magellans...

I respectfully disagree -- it's the CRUISER I hardly ever use.

The reason is, I have two basic jobs for warships:

1. Scouting. The destroyer does a better job, is cheaper, and is available earlier.

2. Escorting transports/sea control/coastal defense. For this I have the battleship.

In other words, the cruiser contains the fighting ability of a destroyer with the mobility of a battleship. NOT a winning combination in my mind. It's only useful if you want to save cash and build a compromise unit. But if I have a navy at all, I have the money to pay for the real units. And a unit that can neither outfight a battleship nor outrun a destroyer is simply not one I choose to buy.

I'm not saying the cruiser is absolutely useless -- only that it has no place in my personal style.

Now the AEGIS cruiser-- there's a different story altogether.

BTW, silly question ..

... what is a cruise missile used for?

I realize they must have value -- I just haven't been able to find a use for them. Most jobs that can be done with a cruise missile can also be done with a nuclear missile, and the nuc is a guaranteed kill.

Respectfully,

Brian P.

PS. I know this is an old thread -- sorry. Is this a problem? I know that some boards have policies against raising threads from the cemetary ... but I didn't see a written rule saying that was the case here. Is it? -- BDP.
